garys_bc
I have a dumb question. My 47 dodge (6 volt) has what appears to be a resistor attached to the generator. I had some work done and the one wire coming out of it was disconnected. The resistor is fastened directly into the generator with one screw, it has one wire coming out of it. My question is what does it do? Which terminal should it be connected to? And do I need it? Thanks I always get the best advice from here. Don Coatney
The resistor is a radio noise supressor. Has no other function. If you have noise in your radio replace it. If you do not have a radio or it does not work do nothing.

But Don's advise holds true: Its for keeping radio frequency noise (from the generator brushes arcing slightly) from disturbing your radio listening pleasure. Niel Hoback
I think its a condenser, not a capacitor. Yes, I'm a nit-picker.
garbagestate 44
A condenser and a capacitor are the same thing in vintage electronic terms.
sscheutzow
Here's some detail from the 1940 Plymouth radio install booklet. Fig 6 in the lower right reads: "Install the generator condenser on the generator. It must be mounted under the ground wire screw and connected to the "A" terminal. Scott. sscheutzow
Thanks guys. Here's a link to a scanned PDF of the 1940 Plymouth, Chrysler, Dodge, and Desoto radio installation and owners manual. This is the entire brochure and is easier to read. Scott. http://mysite.verizon.net/sms40/40_radio.pdf
