Fernando Mendes Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 What kind of puller tool(original) to withdraw the axle shaft?(PIC) Quote
Merle Coggins Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 I've also had luck using a slide hammer puller, or using the brake drum with spacers between it and the axle housing and tightening up the axle nut again. If using the later method be carefull not to run the drum onto the axle tight again or you'll have to get out your drum puller again. I've used deep sockets as spacers. Others have reported using a short piece of pipe. Merle Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted April 21, 2009 Author Report Posted April 21, 2009 Ok Merle. Thanks for your help. Quote

Aaron Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 I just pulled mine a couple weeks ago. Here is a picture of the type of hammer puller I used. Worked real slick. Quote
desoto1939 Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 I have the proper miller tool for pulling the axle that is enclosed in the lower corner of the picture that was part of the first inquiry. Where do you live. I also require a deposit on the tool and insurance onthe tool. I also have several other miller tools that are used for the brakes and other major repairs. rich hartung:) desoto1939@aol.com Quote
grey beard Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Mr. Forest, Back when I still worked in a shop, we called those things Morgan Knockers. They're great tools to have around, and have many uses. I'd like to propose a simpler solution - one that worked fine on my truck. Afrter you have the shoes and backing plate off - you gotta' pull this stuff anyhow - just take your drum and put it back on with the nut on only a few threads. Then grab the drum and use it like a slide hammer. You can reach right inside it with the brakes and backing plate out of the way, and it's heafvy enough to pop those axle shafts right out of the housings. JMHO Quote

In expectation of my soon-to-be-delivered truck having a 1:4some rear axle, I bought a deSoto 3.54 axle that I've been cleaning up. I may just remount the drums to try that one. Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted April 23, 2009 Author Report Posted April 23, 2009 I had to pull the axle drive shaft to remove the differential case to put a new bolt with nut wich was broken and was leaking more by the hole. Thanks to Merle. Now I will have to find the inner and outer oil seal and the bearings.Who can send me the parts number of these? Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted April 23, 2009 Author Report Posted April 23, 2009 Is this gasket(aforests) with five holes preached in manual? Quote
Young Ed Posted April 23, 2009 Report Posted April 23, 2009 In aforests picture of the puller thats a shim. You have to shim the backing plate out to get the proper freeplay for the axles and the diff. Quote

Jim Gaspard Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 At first I thought it was just a new way photos were being posted by individuals. I now realize GTK has updated the format of how our thumbnails look within our posts. I have to say GREAT JOB! Larger photos, clearer and I like the black background. Our forum is first class and is one of the most user-friendly vintage truck sites on the web. Thanks GTK Jim in Dallas Quote
