Norm's Coupe Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Bob, that's a street rod steering wheel. If you can't find a used one, you should be able to get it from one of the street rod catalogs. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 Norm.....just being facetious about the steering wheel. Don't think it would go so good with mine. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Bob, I wasn't sure if you were just kidding or not about the steering wheel, so I posted that. Good thing you don't want to install a wheel like that one. I think they run around $350, plus the adapter to make it fit your car. You could fix your old one for a lot less, under 20 bucks if it's cracked. Quote
greg g Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Bob you coupe looks to be cleaning up real nice, almost ready for the dance. Quote

hkestes41 Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Norm.....just being facetious about the steering wheel. Don't think it would go so good with mine. That steering wheel would be the first thing to go if I was to buy that car. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 That steering wheel would be the first thing to go if I was to buy that car. That may be easier said than done. Look at the steering column it's attached to. It's a modern type column. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 Well, I can either repair the cracks in the wheel on the coupe.....or..... simply install the really nice wheel I bought from Jeff P. It was among his group of D24 parts offered recently. It is a Dodge wheel alright....but off a Canadian Dodge......so that makes it a Plymouth wheel here. That may be a true Dodge horn ring on the right.....doesn't go with this wheel. (I know, the Plym/Dodge horn ring is broken) Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 There are a few cracks in the original wheel that seem to go clear thru to the metal rod inside. Are fixable. Horn center and ring are in fairly good form.......need to be shined. Gonna have to replace that old turn signal....knob is broken off and wires hanging out. Also the cheapie chrome case is in bad shape. It's one of the $20 units like on the convert. That's going to be changed as well. Quote

Bob, your steering wheel isn't cracked anywhere near as bad as this one was cracked when I took it off an old rolling chassis I had. So.....you're right, yours is fixable. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 I now have a really nice Canadian Dodge plastic horn center...... I'd bet if I put that on the Plym, no one would even notice. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 With the rare 1/2 circle horn ring! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 Cheap at twice the price........ Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 With the rare 1/2 circle horn ring! Not as rare as you think. I have seen several mostly on eBay. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Mine is famous too. It was used in the Childrens museums performance of the Watsons go to Birmingham Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 11, 2009 Author Report Posted April 11, 2009 Those infamous half circle horn rings do indeed appear on ebay right along. Some guys have even gone to the trouble to file down the little tabs that are usually left sticking up to make them flush with the cross piece. Either these rings are a little weak, or many Plymouth owners are strong. They must have honked their horns a lot over the years to create these now rare masterpieces. In order to not overwork my horn ring, I've installed this siren as an auxiliary noisemaker. People really get a kick out of hearing it. But several years ago, even before the siren, I added this "ah-oogah" horn. It's activated by a spare starter button switch located below the dash in the opening normally occupied by the cigar lighter. A couple years ago, I bought this horn on ebay.....it's possibly the predecessor to the Roadrunner "beep beep" horn. It just has a kinda small "beep" sound. So, I'm trying to do my part to preserve the lifespan of my horn ring.... Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 As you can see. Those Ebay sellers have nothing on me. The one on the extra steering wheel I have on the garage wall also has one of those. The horn button doesn't look good in that picture, but must be due to the light. It's a good horn button. I don't have to worry about breaking the one in my coupe. I don't use a horn in the modern or old car anyway. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Norm, I seldom use a horm in my driveway either..'cepting if the wife is slow getting out of the house and we be going somewhere... Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Tim, if someone is in my driveway and blows a horn to bring me out of the house, they'll have a long wait. I never go out if someone blows a horn for me. They can come to the door. When we were kids, my cousin and I would go cruising together at the drive-in's a lot. If he was driving that night, he'd pull in the driveway and blow his horn for me to come out. Never once ran out the door to answer that horn. Made him come in the house. He finally stopped blowing the horn. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Norm you missing a fine opportunity to go out, up the hood, rip out the horm wire and say.."hey. its all fixed now..." Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Tim, I'll keep the horn connected, just don't use it. That said though. I have an extra set of horns hanging on the garage wall that also work. Was just checking with my son about a week ago on how to wire them up to the electrical current in the garage. Said he has a couple of transformers laying around that would work. Said we could hook the horn to one of those. The discussion was how to make them into a burglar alarm for the garage. Also, if I wanted to, how to rig them so I could push a wireless button inside to turn them on and off, if I wanted too. He came up with a plan that would work. Now just have to decide if I really want to do it. Wouldn't want them going off while on vacation some time for no reason, so the jury is still out. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Norm..I think it would be best if you hook the horns to a spare battery, maintained by the smallest of trickle charges..activate the horns through a relay that when energized, the output will then feed the input locking the horns on even if the burgular immediately slams the door behind him... Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Tim, I like the garage current the best. I have two circuits out there. One is hot all the time, the other one is only hot if you flip a light switch. I would hook the transformer to the circuit that stays on all the time. I don't like having anything battery operated, even tools. I do have a battery operated drill and two battery operated electric screwdrivers. However, I did not buy any of those. They were given to me as gifts over the year. Have one Makita battery operated screwdriver kit that was a gift about two years or more ago. I haven't opened the case it came in since I've had it. I like using old fashioned plug in electric drill for drilling or driving a screw. It has more power and doesn't lose power as you work. Power stays the same all the time. Only time I use the battery powered drill is when I have one or two holes to drill, otherwise, it's time to dig out the Milwaukee Hole Shooter and plug her in. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 and some night when the crooks break in while the power is off...battery still operates..that's what makes them crooks..knowing when to easily rip off a working stiff.. Quote
