Shawn F. Posted October 15, 2008 Author Report Posted October 15, 2008 Here is a link I just made guys sorry... http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?p=99555#post99555 I have been trying to find information and parts very slowly. The car really is simple to fix and should take no time at all to get going. I just need to get motivated and the biggest thing is money. Even though it is not much money at all to get going like fluid, ignition, wiring, etc I just dont have the funds to get it done. I'm only 21 and I know, usually kids my age have money to blow on cars and toys but I try not to do so. Over the past few months I have been selling a few vehicles and trying to sell some parts to get this project on the road and driving around before I tear it apart to rebuild the motor, tranny and paint it. Shawn F. Posted October 15, 2008 Author Report Posted October 15, 2008 BTW Don, are you guys doing that show in Concord again or was that a one time thing only? If so then please let me know when and I will come up for sure! If it's already passed then shame on me. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Shawn that show in Concord was a national plymouth club meet wasn't it? If so they happen yearly but the location changes. The only one for this year was in Detroit at the end of July. Next year is WI and I think Maryland. Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 15, 2008 Author Report Posted October 15, 2008 Oh ok your right. Darn too bad. I will have to try and make the Maryland one then. Who is the guy that lives here near me in NC that has the shop and is into these old Plymouths, Chryslers, etc? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I'll send him a PM that you be asking... Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 15, 2008 Author Report Posted October 15, 2008 Thanks! I was just wondering because he was a pretty nice guy that offered to help me out and had a car somewhere that he said I could use for parts, etc which is probably gone by now haha. I wasn't sure if he went to any local cruise in's or not. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Look for an answer soon..he has just got back with me and remembers talking to you and such... Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 16, 2008 Author Report Posted October 16, 2008 Tim I got a PM from him last night, thanks a lot for getting me in touch with him. Quote
51bizzcoupe Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 If I get it then should I look into a Fat Man's MII kit or just dropped uprights, etc? Reason I ask is because I know the guys at Fat Man and they are only 20 minutes from my house so getting one would be easy and even though I can get a nice deal it's still a lot of money. I'd like to put air bags on the car though (not to lay it on the frame but just for ride quality really because air ride handles so nicely). What about a 57 Chevy rear end? I have one with 3.73 gears in it under my house and it is in great shape. I was going to put it in my 48 Chevy but dont have to. hey shawn, you can get that car quit a bit lower without installin air bags . if memory serves me you can get about 6" out of the front suspension with only minor steering mods. i have pics of the work i did to my stock front end to get it to lay rocker panels let me know if your interested. Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 16, 2008 Author Report Posted October 16, 2008 I am very interested! I plan to leave this car stock but if this is something I can do and can put it back to stock height and suspension if I plan to sell then I wont mind doing it. Anything I do to this car has to be to where I can always put it back stock. Thanks a lot for any information man and your car is great! Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 16, 2008 Author Report Posted October 16, 2008 BTW, where are you from? Welcome to the forums here! Quote
51bizzcoupe Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 BTW, where are you from? Welcome to the forums here! im from Simi Valley CA. about 40 miles north of L.A. Fat man offers dropped spindles and moving your lower spring plate to the bottom of the control arm will get you about 4.5 up front. then i would take about a coil and half. if you dont want to modify the control arm install some dropped spindles and find a donor set of springs and take about a coil and half. in the rear you could go with a 4" block but i would have the springs dearched 3" and put in a 2" block. Frank M. Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 Hi Shawn. Nice lookin Windsor. Not a lot of them around. From the looks of the grill and fenders mouldings--they alone are very much sought after. That trim would fit any 46-48 Chrysler including T&Cs and Imperials. Doesnt look like much pitting and thats one BIG advantage. As to the interior---It may have been issued a Highlander, but whats in there is NOT the original plaid. Only New Yorker and Windsor models could be ordered with the Highlander interior. You will see many T&Cs with it in them, but that never was an original option. The plaid has been reproduced by several people, and is availiable, but a little high. It does however increase the value of the car. Everyone seems to like it. To my thinking.you couldnt go wrong restoring that car. If you think it looks good now,you should have seen it new. Ive learned a lot about this type of car ( Chryslers 46-48 ) , and particularly Highlanders.I have three converts. A 46-a 47 and a 48. All are Highlanders. What Im saying is if you need any info about it ,I will be glad to share whatever I know. Good Luck with it Frank M. Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 17, 2008 Author Report Posted October 17, 2008 Thanks guys. I will contact you both about some information on this. As for the plaid, under it has original bluish green interior on the seats so it was a cover besides the door panels and headliner I dont know. I like tan myself but we will see. Interior will be the last thing on my list. First is engine, tranny and brakes. Once I get the engine, tranny, brakes and all new lines and hoses ran then I will drive the car around some, work out the bugs and then probably pull the engine/tranny and rebuild both and get rolling on the body work. The trim is in OK shape but all pitted on the front so the front needs a new grill, bumper, etc in order for it to look nice. Quote
Tom Skinner Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 Shawn, I am restoring my 2nd 1948 Chrysler Royal Sedan, and live in Huntersville NC If your close and need a spare part or a little help now and then let me know. I know a thing or 2 about these cars. Tom Skinner Home in the evenings:)704) 912-3060 Quote
Ernie Baily Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 Hi Shawn So you live in Simi Valley! So do I! I've been driving my 48 Plymouth every day since May when my everyday car(55Dodge) is in the shop getting the 270 Hemi rebuilt. I'm taking it to the Fall Fling on Sat. at Woodley park. Its a Red 2dr sedan. Hope to see you! Drop me a email at aalb15@pacbell.net Good luck with your New Old car! Quote
Ernie Baily Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 Opps Shawn! I got so excided to see some else from Simi Valley! Best of luck with your car! Quote
falconvan Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 hey shawn, you can get that car quit a bit lower without installin air bags . if memory serves me you can get about 6" out of the front suspension with only minor steering mods. i have pics of the work i did to my stock front end to get it to lay rocker panels let me know if your interested. Shawn, Here's a great no cost way to get a 3" drop. All you need is a welder; I did this on a rat truck that I built using a 48 dodge chassis and it worked great. Take your lower control arms and cut off the rivets that hold the spring support plate. Remove it from the top of the control arm. Cut the small structural support plate from the bottom of the control arm. Take the spring support plate, trim the edges so that it will sit flush against the bottom of the control arm and weld it all the way around, inside and out. Make sure you have the upright bolted to it while welding to make sure it aligns properly. Finally cut 1/2 coil out of the front springs. This is what it will look like when it's done. The original is on the right, the modified one on the left. Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 18, 2008 Author Report Posted October 18, 2008 Tom thanks a lot for the offer. I will have to take you up on that soon! Is that Exit 23 off I-77 or am I completely wrong? My friend in the fire department works for Medic up there so I know where Huntersville is at. 45 minutes from me or so. I am off 485 and Providence. Do you know anything about doing the brakes on these cars? Mine needs new lines, wheel cylinders I'm sure are shot and I do have an extra set of nice brake shoes with nice linings on them in the trunk. I really want to get this thing running and drive it around town some. I'm so anxious to do so. Ernie, no problem haha. I do know where Semi Valley is at though. I am from San Bernardino, Palm Springs, Redlands (born there) and that whole area and then the high desert near 29 Palms. I miss it there badly but do not miss with smog, heaps of people and the peoples additudes that's for sure. Falconvan, thanks for that tip. I need to save that somewhere because it's good to know these things since not everone knows about this and I'd like to try it on a spare set of A arms! Quote
Tom Skinner Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Shawn, Yeah! Your close. Do you have a Service Manual yet? They are on Ebay $29 or so. You probably need to rebuild the Wheel Cylinders all the way around or replace them. Repack your Bearings and change out your Dust Seals all at once. Then you will have brakes. They come in handy. Andy Berbaum (800)457-1250 MA. has it all. Ask him for his Parts Catalog Chrysler 1930-1962 I think he gets $4 for it. You are going to need a Drum - Hub Puller to get into those Rear Drums. They don't pull off by hand. I can drive over and let you use mine. It is an unusual looking one the Auto stores don't carry anymore. Is the car inside? Winter is coming, and that makes it easy to work on. Tom Huntersville NC (704) 912-3060 Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 18, 2008 Author Report Posted October 18, 2008 I do not have a manual yet but need to get one. As for the brakes, the wheel cylinders seem to be $50 bucks a pop! Should I get new ones or hone and rebuild my stocks? The car is outside. I have a 2 car garage but the custom softail motorcycle and two dune buggies are in there. I can make room to put it in there when I need to work on it but I need to get it cleaned up some. I am only 21 and still living at home for now until I can get my own place so my parents dont like junk laying around in the garage (even though it's not junk haha). Quote
Tom Skinner Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Shawn, Those new Wheel Cylinders are about $39.50 each with Andy Bernbaum Rebuilding Kits alot less @ $7 each for (6) Kits and $22 for (1) Master Cylinder Kit I reckon rebuilding at @ $71 S&H Included. I have done that before that it usually works unless there is alot of wear/scoring in the Cylinders. Yes I am exit 18 on 77 North. I am 52 so I can coach you alot on those Brakes. You will need help getting those Rear Drums off, I can help. Its a chore sometimes. Tom PS. I have a teenage son I'll bring him along. He is a Chrysler Mechanic already - we did my Clutch Job in February 2008. We may even drive my 1948 Chrysler if its early on a weekend day. I will need some heads up on when you want to do it as I am Sheetrocking a neighbors garage and Painting Bedrooms in my house now on weekends. Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 19, 2008 Author Report Posted October 19, 2008 Tom thanks a lot for all the help and for wanting to help me... Give me a few weeks and then I will buy the brake parts (I would say about 3 weeks) and then let you know a week or two in advance on a date that we can set up. I will clear the garage or driveway and bring the car out from behind the house. I'll call that guy you told me about and see about ordering those parts. I will need to change the brake lines as well I'm sure and the hoses. I'd like to change all the hoses and lines for the brakes and fuel that way I dont run into problems later down the road. I have a picture of this car from about 8-10 years ago when the PO first bought it. It looks like a totally different and new car compaired to it now. That is what 10 years of sitting out in the weather, snow, rain and sun do to these cars. I keep mine under a heavy boat cover mostly but lately the past 2 months it's out in the weather. I need to get it covered back up. I did go out today and looked at it to see what I am getting myself into. It will be fun that's for sure. Quote
