Another Speedo Thread

i have a problem with my speedo, but since i am going to replace every cable in the car anyway (picked up my harnesses at customs today - looking great!) i guess i'll just take the instruments anyway, so then i can get everything fixed.

it looks like this:

the mileage counter still works, so am i right when i think i just have to kind of re-hook the disc and put a new glas in...? p-10 veterans to the front row, please...:)

Yes I would think replacing it would get it working again. The 39-47 trucks have a clear plastic disk with a thin metal needle clamped to the outside. They warp in the sun and the needle falls off. I cut a new circle and put the needle back on and it works again. Although the speed is off. Notice the disk behind the needle on the 40 that does the green yellow red indication.

yes, i guess when everything is working and the disk is where it belongs,

you can see the speed indication color through the small plastic lens in disk where the needle is.

i would like to know how the mechanism works.

there are these tiny plastic "ears" on the disk, you can see one on the upper right on 2 hours,

maybe that's for holding the dik in place? i wonder how they manged to break this.

also would like to know how to get the gauges out of the dash:confused:

I had my speedo off so many times .... I think I did one in my sleep once!... Any way the two O'Clock tab is where the "jewel" on the metal ring lines up with .. So you can see the different warning colors.. What to do is ..Remove the speedo cable take the three screws off in the back ... Once you have it on the work bench put one finger on the Aluminum ring (speedo generator) to hold the needle from moving then with your other hand grab the plastic (clear center) and turn to your left and pull up.. Should come right off then line up the clear ring with the metal tan pointer and bend the tabs to secure it ...then reverse the operation Hold and install turning to the right no glue or anything needed...

Typically, getting the gauges out of the dash involves a lot of "standing

on your head" to get up under the dash. The speedo may be held in

place by 4 small screws......the gauges perhaps by 2 screws each.

Not sure of other details about removal as I'm not familiar with how

that instrument panel is made.

On a P15, the gauges have to come out thru a square opening, therefore

you have to gently turn and/or tilt them to get them out and back in.

Yes, Capt. Fred. Brush up on all the swear words you know because you will need them. Heck, you probably know them both in German and in English. Bob T is right. You'll have to get your hands and tools up under the dash, I believe. It wasn't a problem for me because I was disassembling the entire car. You have to be a little more careful. Keep us updated. Do you have a manual for your car?

Capt. Fred, When you are ready to put it back together and need a new lens contact these guys. They have it. I did the drawing for the silk screens over 30 years ago. God....I'm old.

:D oh lordy, lordy, i do know a lot of swear words, that's for sure.:D

i was afraid you'd tell me something like this, is there ANY company in the world that built it in a different way?

i'll post some funny plymo-sutra pics when i'm taking them out and get stuck upside down with my legs out of the windows.

i have a manual, several of them in fact, but none of them gets specific when it comes to this point. "point one: remove the gauges." oh, thanks, spare me the details, please:mad:

thanks for all your tips! you guys are really helpful! i'll be away for a week,

my mum got 60 and celebrates, and after that i am going to tear that dash apart.

Label everything! Pictures of everything! Baggies with parts actually inside them with labels stating what it goes to and how many, etc. Write down how you removed things so you have a reverse order to follow upon installation. Do not use your workbench for parts storage....don't ask how I know. Lost or damaged parts due to my own stupidness have cost me plenty of time and money, sigh..

Fred, when you start to undo the nuts holding the instrument cluster onto the dash, make sure to take note of what washers and small spacers are there as there might be some cup spacers and other weird little brackets etc that will make things difficult if you don't get them back in the right spot.......and yep the ability to stand on your head helps.......lol.........andyd

ok, it has been a while since i started this thread, but now i finally got were i wanted to be... almost, that is.

i ripped everything out of the car, to avoid standing on my head and all the other things you told me about.

20090509140534291_wlgtxjrkel.jpg

now, i have 3 questions:

1. how do i remove the wire from the temp gauge? this one:

20090509140805712_gcmrbwhapx.jpg

i pulled quite hard and tried to unscrew it and everything, but it won't come off and i don't want to break anything...

2. i disassembled the speedo like you told me before (had to break my fingers first, because the instruments wouldn't come out there because of the temp wire) and took it out of its housing.

20090509141302475_maulrknizn.jpg

sadly, i cannot replace the glas because the numbers and everything are screenprinted directly onto it... so what, might even look nice.

how do i get the little ring back onto the plastic disc, and wich way around does it belong? the plastic lense on the plastic nose or the other way 'round?

20090509141338087_pjijwlzzds.jpg

20090509141404350_anyscalvbs.jpg

3. how can i test the speedo, when i have it in pieces like now? i have a bad feeling that it might not work, because the little nose was up on the right, and not down on the left like i thing it would make sense...

20090509141445310_nfwutedtlc.jpg

i moved it there manually, but i dont know if it works.

the wiring came in nice and smooth so far, but it must be a station wagon harness. the wiring for the fuel gauge and the tail lights is lead down under the car, and not trough the window column and roof. i'll make it fit, anyway.

and now for some answers!:)

Stop all attempts to remove the line from the temp gauge. That will ruin it. It comes out either from the engine end or you can remove the 2 flathead screws and leave the temp gauge dangling in place. Now for your glass there is a co that advertises in the back of the ply bulletin that silk screens new glass for the instruments. Looks great.

ok, that might work... i'm going to try it as soon as i get back there.

no p-10 owners here knowing wich way around the disc belongs?

IF the speedo is broken, does anyone here happen to have one in the back of a dusty old box with the remains of a parts car in it...?

yeee-haaw!

the speedo came back from the shop today, they really did a great job!

they machined a few parts by hand that couldn't be had around here, replaced worn parts, cleaned everything and put it back together without destroying the patina!

can't wait to get to the garage tomorrow!

oh boy, oh boy, oh boy:D

Fred, remember to be careful with the Temp guage.......the actual guage will only unbolt from the back on the instrument housing with the 2 screws......the temp "wire" with the wire coiled around it does NOT come off the guage.......you unbolt the sender unit that bolts into the engine by placing a larger open mouth spanner on the engine block fitting and gently use an open mouth spanner on the fitting that holds the temp wire into the block.......use plenty of spray WD40 to lubricate the fitting as you don't want the nut head to jam against the temp sender and break the wire.....not good if that happens.....andyd
