moose Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 We're supposed to be getting a Culver's before long in Webb City, asmall town just at the north edge of Joplin. They are putting up a new building on the corner of the parking lot at a new strip mall. Right across from a McDonalds. Down the main Webb City drag of Madison Ave, there are also Sonic, Burger King and Wendy's plus other sorts of eaterys. Back to Joplin, there's also the local favorite for "spaghetti red" called Fred & Reds. Has only a horseshoe type counter for seating. You just gotta stand around and wait for a seat or two to become vacant. The owner ships bricks of his chili all over the country. Hey Bob, How soon is the Culvers going to be open? My family and I are spending our vacation at my my parents place outside Carthage. We're going to arrive in about three weeks--maybe not open yet. I love Fred and Red's. I only went there a few times, but it was awesome. My wife always looks at me funny when I put some leftover chili on spaghetti. I should take her there and show her the original, huh? Back in high school in Carthage in the 90's, Sonic was the place to be. My buddy Nathan had/still has a yellow '57 Chevy, and he always got the outside spot. I parked next spot up in my '54. When Andy was working we would order a happy hour half priced lime-ade, and get a full meal for something like 50 cents. Good times. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 Moose......I don't think it'll be open that soon. But they seem to be making pretty good progress on the thing. Walls are up, and not sure just how far along by now. On the corner of Madison and MacArthur, across from McDonalds. A brand new Sonic is now open on 32nd St in Joplin, just a bit E of Main. Also a pretty new one in Webb City on Madison, on the W side. Old one was on the E side. Let me know when you are going to be at Carthage. Also check your P M s. Bob Quote
moparjack44 Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 We had a Sonic here about 5 years ago. Only lasted about a year, it's now a Huddle House. Jackie Quote
John Mulders Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 Funny, in your profile the Golden Retriever is not mentioned ! Quote
radioguy7 Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 They play Sonic commercials all the time on the TV stations here in Connecticut but we have none in the state!! go figure. Around here the best fast food chain is Wendy's, there burgers are always made with fresh ground beef and are never pre-made, always made to order. They make a half way decent chili as well if you add their hot sauce. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted February 25, 2009 Author Report Posted February 25, 2009 Didn't know this post was going to cause such a reaction from everyone. But.....after hearing the comments, don't know if I'll make a special trip to try a Sonic Burger. Sounds like just a run of the mill fast food burger. That said, you have to understand my feelings about food in general. I really don't get all that excited about any food, as my wife and others close to me will attest to. I've been to places that serves all kinds of food at all kinds of prices. Actually, even at the fine dining places that will charge $100 per meal. I really can't see the difference in the food, or the taste compared to a $20 meal per person. Most of the time, I like the $20 per meal better, plus you usually get more food. Those $100 per meal places usually have a lot of empty spaces on the plate. I've actually left some of those places only to come home and eat a lunch meat sandwich to fill up. Again though, I normally don't rave about any food. To me it's all just food. I have to eat it to stay alive, so I eat it. I also never stuff myself with any meal, even holiday meals. However, I do eat often during the day. Breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, dinner, and then a snack around 9 PM or so. But again, no food really sticks out. The in between snacks are usually something like a sweet roll, toast, candy bar, pudding, lunch meat sandwich, slice of pie or cake or anything just laying around. Don't eat many chips, etc. anymore. I've done that all my life and I've never gain or lost any weight doing it, and my cholesterol is always well below the limits when I have it checked. Quote
eric wissing Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 Here we have "Tasty Inn & Out" . Greasy, yes but tasty. I know they are tasty going in , I have no clue on the out. Get the "Shopper's special": 12 loosemeats, a bucket of onion rings and 1/2 gal of rootbeer. It should feed 2maybe 6 people.http://www.roadfood.com/FAQ/. I avoid fast food chains unless I am more than 4 hours from home.http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lincoln-NE/Tastee-Inn-and-Out/27016887098 Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 This is probably one of the last, original greasy spoons on old Route 66 in California. It's called Norma Jean's Holland Burger and it's located just out of Victorville on old Highway 66 on the way to Barstow (I'm sure Dennis is familiar with this place). It's been in existence since 1947 and it's world famous to Route 66 travelers with great, tasty food. I pass that place all the time, on Saturday mornings there are always classic cars parked there for breakfast. My wife has eaten there but I cannot eat there due to my diet. The name is "Emma Jean's Holland Burger Cafe" not Norma Jean's. Dennis:cool: Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 Don and I ate at a place that was kind a nice however I want to take him to the "Florida ave grill" This place is the greasy spoon to beat all. In my younger days when I would stay out all night with my band and DJ we would watch the sun come up at this place. The breakfast was so big you could not eat it all. I took the daughter there years later (she's grown) she told me it was no big deal. She took pictures and told her friends about it now they all go when ever they get a chance. Quote

I'll give you heads up and let you know and maybe we can meet up. I don't know why I said Norma instead of Emma. Just a brain fart, I guess. Quote
47heaven Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 I live 3 miles from the town of Clements, and 14 miles from Lodi, Ca. but because I'm on a "dividing road" I get a Lodi address. So I guess I can lay claim to being from the town of the original A&W. Great burgers and the owner is a hot rod guy for sure. I used to belong to American Steel, a local car club. They put on a hellva car show there in the streets and parking lots of downtown Lodi. By the time I got my P15 in 2006, the local A&W had closed down. I always wanted to go there with an old car and catch their cruise nights and have a car hop wait on me...etc. Now, it's a Mexican car lot...go figure. Quote

Well, I will join in with three choices, IN N OUT, TOMMY'S and my Fav. HI-LIFE BURGERS in Pasadena. just thinking about the 1/2 pound Bacon Avocado Burger with Cheese makes me wanna go. . . .(get my heart checked. . . ) Well, at least Norm would back me up on this if he wasnt on Vacation. . . . HI-LIFE BURGERS in Pasadena. just thinking about the 1/2 pound Bacon Avocado Burger with Cheese makes me wanna go. . . .(get my heart checked. . . ) Where does it make you want to go, to the throne? :D That said, who needs a half pound of hamburger in one setting? I've heard that one only needs about 4 ounces of meat per day. So........that's already twice the amount in one sitting, not to count the fat content of hamburger. I'm not on a diet and never had one, but for people that are, half pounders are heart attacks waiting to happen. Quote
TodFitch Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 In N Out beats all for the best tasting burgers and fries. However one must go to the far left to find them. Apparently they have only one plant for making the beef paddies and they refuse to freeze the meat. So all the outlets are within the limited distance from Los Angeles that they can ship the meat and still have it fresh. No problem on shipping the fries: They make those from scratch at every outlet. For a fast food joint, In-n-Out is up there for quality. Certainly far better than McDonalds or Burger King and their like. And there is an In-n-Out pretty close to my home. However Clarke's Burger in Mountain View or Kirk's down in Saratoga, while both more expensive than In-n-Out, have better burgers. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 The eastern equivlent of In-and-out is called Five Guys Burgers. I just googled then and discovered they have a new eatery here in the Boro that I did not know about. I am headed there for lunch right now. http://www.fiveguys.com/menu.aspx Quote

Niel Hoback Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 One thing I learned from 5 guys is, always order the smaller burger. Their regular size is way more meat than anyone needs at one meal. And don't start me on the fries. Geez, the whole family could eat on one order of those. Quote
47heaven Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 What brand of cars are made in Mexico? The only one I have ever heard of were Volkswagons. Well, the cars in the lot are mainly SUV's and Pick-ups, and most likely American or foreign-made cars. The reason I say "Mexican car lot" is because it's peppered with Mexican flags and signs in Spanish. Hope that makes it clearer. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 All 4WD Dodge trucks are made in Mexico. Well, they were 5 years ago, anyway. Quote
48mirage Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 In recent years they've changed the menu. I worked there as a 15 year old and had the menu memorized for 30 years. Not anymore. It's also not the same burger as the old days. Well, I guess none of us are either. Quote

Looks like the "Little Burger" at Five Guys has more calories than the regular burger at In-n-Out. Their regular burger has slightly more calories than the In-n-Out "Double-Double": http://net.fiveguys.com/files/files/NutritionalInfo_Oct2008.pdf http://www.in-n-out.com/pdf/nutrition_2008.pdf Since this thread started out about Sonic, might as well toss that in too. Sonic's burger is on par, calorie wise, with the Five Guys. Have to go to the Jr. to get the size of the In-n-Out burger: http://www.sonicdrivein.com/pdfs/menu/SonicNutritionGuide.pdf Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 We will await your report.................. A pair of double bacon cheese bergers, small order of fries, and two medium drinks came to a tad under twenty bucks. Lisa thought that was high until the bag of food was ready. This is one of those places where you place your order and they give you cups for your drinks and a number. The drinks come in two sizes. Medium and large. But you get free refills with both sizes so why buy the large. Also there is a big box of "in the shell" roasted peanuts and they are free to eat while your food is being cooked. So I grabbed a hand full of peanuts and Lisa and I started eating them. In short order (how is that for a pun?) our food was ready. They called our number so Iwalked up to the counter. They had our bag of food near the tub of french fries and kept scooping fries in the bag until it was full. I carried the heavy bag to the table and handed it to Lisa. She looked inside and ask me how to get the hamburgers from the bottom of the bag. I told her we had to eat our way to the bottom of the bag. The fries are the best. When you walk in the door there is a pallet full of potatos in 100# bags. They come out from the kitchen and grab a bag as required. So we ate a few fries and I reached to the bottom of the bag and grabbed the grub. The burgers were great. Loaded with crunchy bacon and ozzing with melted cheese. Of interest there was very little grease from the hamburgers. We ate our fill and refilled our medium drinks a couple of times. We were both so stuffed that we could hardly walk out of the place. And we did not even eat half of the small order of fries. Did we get our twenty bucks worth,,,, Yes! Will we return,,,,,,,,,,,, Yes! but not today as we are both so full we will skip supper tonight.
