fadingfastsd Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 Hey guys, Just throwing out a quick update to you. Car has been at the exhaust shop (American Muffler in San Diego, CA) getting the pipes installed. I went with Lake Pipes from SpeedwayMotors.com, 70" length, and 2" OD. Shop did an excellent job installing everything, taking into account the car is going 3" lower, so it's all tucked up nice. Sorry for some crappy cell phone pics, but what do you think? Haven't heard her run yet, picking it up this afternoon. I just swung by at lunch to check it out. Quote
bigred48 Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 it looks great, and i'm sure that it will sound awesome with those short mufflers on it. Is there enough room to pull the drive shaft if you need to? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 Looks good. I've had a pair of those for my P15 coupe for several years (about 8, I think). However, mine still wrapped in plastic hanging on the basement wall. Was going to put them on this year but never got around to it again. I never did intend to hook them up though, was just to be for looks. Maybe next year if I get a round to it. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 Here ya are, Norm................ Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 Bob, I really gotta get one of those one of these days when I get around to it. Quote
fadingfastsd Posted October 8, 2008 Author Report Posted October 8, 2008 Yep it to me awhile to get a round tuit and do the engine swap in the first place! well not really...I guess I'd only had the car a month or two... damn I'm too impulsive. Quote
fadingfastsd Posted October 8, 2008 Author Report Posted October 8, 2008 Oh and another update... she's now over at San Diego Rod & Customs in Santee/El Cajon area. They're finishing up dialing in the carbs, building the carb linkage, and some other minor stuff. She'll be up and rolling in no time and I'll have some sound clips for you. Quote
fadingfastsd Posted October 8, 2008 Author Report Posted October 8, 2008 it looks great, and i'm sure that it will sound awesome with those short mufflers on it. Is there enough room to pull the drive shaft if you need to? Yes there is enough room to get the driveshaft out. I would unbolt it and swing it over on the drivers side. Also, the whole exhaust system is built with hanger, so the whole thing is pretty easily removable. I would grease all the hangers, unbolt up at the headers, and the whole thing will slide back and down to get off the car. Pretty cool actually, I'm really happy with how it turned out! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 Looks good. But I couldn't tell from those pics.......are there two pipes coming out at the rear bumper? Or are the lakes pipes also your tailpipes??? Quote
fadingfastsd Posted October 8, 2008 Author Report Posted October 8, 2008 No theres nothing out the rear. The exhaust runs through two 12" glasspacks right after the headers, then out the lake pipes. Lake pipes are the only exit. I accidently bought the ones with caps, but figured thats ok b/c I might add dumps before the glass packs later and use the caps. Quote
bigred48 Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 sounds like a well designed system too, good work. Quote
Normspeed Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 Looks great, and that ought to give you some great sounds. Quote
mackster Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 That's gonna rumble like a monster....I got to hear it now, before your neighbors do.... Quote
fadingfastsd Posted October 12, 2008 Author Report Posted October 12, 2008 Hey thanks for all the great comments guys. I still haven't heard it yet, The car went into a local shop, San Diego Rods & Kustoms right after the exhaust was done. They are finishing the carb linkage, probably going to convert it to 12V, and do some other stuff. I'll keep you posted on it! Quote
Don Jordan Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I'm glad no one knows me - so I can ask silly questions without being embarrassed. I've known about them since the 50s but why do they call them LAKE pipes? All these years and I've never known. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I'm glad no one knows me - so I can ask silly questions without being embarrassed.I've known about them since the 50s but why do they call them LAKE pipes? All these years and I've never known. Its a California thing. In the early days of hot rodding the Californians raced on dry lake beds. They used exhaust pipes low to the ground on each side of the car. These exhaust pipes became known as lakes pipes. Quote
Shawn F. Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Those look great. I'm a big fan of smitty's and lake pipes for sure! I want a pair on my 48 Chevy coupe or my 46 Chrysler. Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 That exhaust looks great man! Glad to hear you got the engine running and hope it gets on the road soon! Its a California thing. In the early days of hot rodding the Californians raced on dry lake beds. They used exhaust pipes low to the ground on each side of the car. These exhaust pipes became known as lakes pipes. Good call Don! This kinda brought up another exhaust name/origin question if I may. Where did the Bellflower tips get thier name?? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 from the shape..like a bellflower..then you have the fishtails, bologna cut etc etc..I tried to get an image off the net to post here but could not find one... Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Here ya are, Norm................ Bob, Zig Ziglar would be proud, you got your own Round Tuit Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 There is an exhaust tip or muffler at a local MC shop here in omaha that is called rocketship[tip's name not shop] am seriously considering them, pretty neat shape and you would'nt expect to see them on a car. I have seen baloney cut tips but have never seen baloney cut in that fashion! Frankie Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I think you have to be in the country bologna came from to see it cut in that fashion..here in America..just take a little off the top.. I know you probably are wanting to put the tips on your car before you post the pic here..but..I must say, am curious to see what they look like.. Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Will take pictures at MC shop, you can get them as a tip or as a motorcycle pipe. Very interesting shape indeed, sort of Flash Gordon/Buck Rodgerish! Frankie PS Tip same length as pipe just no baffles. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 are they similar to these? these could be easily put on a car exhast tip..especially if inserted into a chorme extension http://www.denniskirk.com/1/1/231925-l-a-sleeve-xtreme-curved-exhaust-tips-curvedd-exhaust-systems-exhaust-tips.html Quote
