Had the opportunity to go to a shooting range, wife and both sons went aswell and we got training with a Glock (9mm), another automatic (.45) and a 3.57.

That was fun :)

First some basic training (safety), then shotting with one round and at the end with 5 rounds in a clip. I think we did not do bad, we hit mostly the targets...

With all the discussion on guns I found it fun to do as a sport.

Well...........I was taught that you don't call it a gun. It's a weapon. You use your gun for other things that are not printable on this web site. If you called your weapon a gun in basic training you would be doing a little extra PT.;)

Cool! I'll jump in on this. I collect WWII rifles. I am trying to get the standard issue rifle from each country involved. I also gave it a little twist to make it a bit more difficult. They all have the same year of manufacture, 1944 to honor my two uncles who fought and died that year and my Dad who was born that year. So far I have a German 98K Mauser, British Enfield, Russian Mosin-Nagant 91/30 and a Russian Mosin-Nagant M44. I just clean them up, fire a few rounds through them and put them away. I'm looking forward to getting a Swiss K31 and of course an M1 Garand. I really want to hear the clip go PING!

Aw but in Wisconsin they call it a "turdy-turdy" Norm.

And Paul .... I have a Garand and does it ever go "ping" .... its one sweet piece of battlefield equipment. I just wouldn't have wanted to lug it around all day / week / month / year long without a personal caisson.... a P18 works well! And, you need to make darn sure you get your thumb out of the way when you are loading it!

You always had to open the bolt when presenting the weapon for inspection. When it was returned to you, you had to close the bolt. You learn real quick to get the thumb out of there fast. You think it is heavy, try carring it at cross-body sling arms and climb trees to string telephone wire across a road in the woods. Got caught by a Col. with the rifle leaning against the tree while I was about 25" up in the tree, had to come down for the chewing out then chimb back up with the rifle at cross-body sling arms. I told him that I had my 45 on my hip so I had a weapon, he was not convinced.

This is in the console of my Dodge Magnum "Detroit Edition".

If you carry that in the car all the time, what happens if someone breaks into your car while you are in a store shopping? Thief finds the weapon, waits for you to return to the car, then uses that weapon against you to rob you. Now, if the weapon wasn't in the car, he may not have a weapon to do that with. He would just take whatever is in the car and leave. Or.........if he just took the weapon and left, that's one more weapon on the street that can be used by the criminal, and maybe kill someone with your weapon.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against anyone owning a weapon. I just don't see a need to carry one around, unless going to target practice or hunting. And, of course some ranchers may need one when out in the fields. The only other reason may be for someone who carries a lot of cash in the course of operating their business.

Years ago everyone carried guns. Then they also used them to settle arguments in the wild wild west. Eventually, they came out with laws against carrying a weapon to stop the hot heads from having shootouts. Do we really want to return to the days of the wild wild west when people settled their differences with weapons. Then having bullets flying around hitting innocent bystanders? It's bad enough the crooks do that.

Like I said, I'm not against anyone having a right to own a gun. Just not sold on the idea that everyone should be allowed to carry them around.

Norm who's to say he doesn't carry it with him in the store too? Depends on the Michigan carry laws.

carry laws vary..even within the state..lol....some stores put a sign up that firearms are not permitted..however that does not say you cannot carry in that store..remember it is concealed..if seen most owners ask you to remove it from the premises..argue that and now it can esulate to a misdeamener..no cop will cite you here if asked to take yourweapon off the premises and you immediately did that..store owner will be made to be an ***** if he tried to push it further..

actually I have never heard of any problems with our carry permits...sure there are some..but on the average..all is up and up..odd are the person wanting to obey the laws by getting the permit, are the same people who will abide by the regs while toting the same..

We got conceal and carry in MN a few years ago and I really haven't heard of any trouble either. I think I heard of 1 story where the person unconcealed and defended themselves.

The stories of the wild west are just that .... largely stories. Gunfights generally weren't really "fights" at all in most cases and not everyone even had a gun let alone knew how to use it. Ammo was expensive back then too and not that easy to come by.

Concealed carry here in Colorado has been on the upswing over the last several years following the change in the law that allows wider concealed carry permitting. I don't think there has been one notable problem in those intervening 4 or 5 years where one person with a carry permit has used it to cause problems. That's a pretty decent record to say the least. And, I suspect that there have been crimes that have been prevented because of the law.

I do recommend that anyone with a desire to even get a permit, let alone carry a firearm....concealed or otherwise.....fully understand the laws, how the firearm operates, become proficient with its use and understand the enormous responsibility it places on you should you choose to or have to use it be that in a hunting situation, target shooting or in the most extreme case ... the defense of self or others. That's one of the ways, through the responsible possession and use of our firearms, that we ensure these Rights for future generations. If any of you were following the recent Heller decision at the U.S.Supreme Court you understand the importance of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and how fragile it can be. The Heller decision helped but it didn't put the issue to rest for sure.

1. When I leave my vehicle, the gun goes with me, conceled.

2. Around here, if he's going to rob or steal, he already has a weapon.

3. Not many ranches around the Detroit area.

4. There are many people with Concelled Pistol Permits in Michigan. Haven't had any shoot-outs.

There has been an ederly woman robbed in front of my house. Another woman robbed across the street. Both walking home from the business district (2 streets away) in the morning. Within a half mile of me, two banks and two 7-11's have been held up numerous times. Other people have been robbed.

I have 17 years experience as a Reserve Sgt with the Sheriff Dept. working with the road patrol. Every person with a CPL license has had to go through extensive training, both lecture and hands-on, before they are issued a CPL. There is also an extensive background check (State and Federal).

Wow! Great thread. I'd like to jump in.

I have a rifle from WWI (Springfield) - WWII (Garand) and an 1860 octagonal barrel, lever action Winchester lever action 30-30.

Sort of like cars only easier to store. You buy one then before you know it...

If I could find one in good shape I'd like to get an M14. That's what we had in Viet Nam before they went to M16 (which I never liked).

and finally - on this same subject: did you hear that there is a town in Texas that wants to allow teachers to carry side arms. Great idea. "Why Johnnie, you didn't do your homework." BLAM!!:D

"1860 octagonal barrel, lever action Winchester lever action 30-30"

Is this a replica Don? Thought the first was a Henry which became a Winchester later on. Even Henry wasnt produced in 1860 but later on after the War broke out. I know there were other lever action rifles like the Joslyn but Winchester? I'm only going by memory so I could be wrong.

I liked the M-16 once I learned how to adjust the sights and still use some "Kentucky windage." After making expert 2 yrs in a row and missing the range record by 2 points the Corps wanted me to get into competition. I learned that most of those who competed liked using the M-14 over the M-16. It didnt really matter by then, I was ready to get out.

Thr first Winchester rifle was the Model 1866. 1860 was the Henry (which became Winchester). I have 2 original Sharps New Model 1863's. A rifle and a carbine. Both were, I believe, were Civil War issued. I have a book on the Sharps which lists serial numbers of issued Sharps (some records were lost). My numbers are 10 or less than those listed (falls in between listed numbers). 1st Maryland Cav. and 7th Indiana Veteran Volunteers. Veteran Volunteers were solders who had served their time and reenlisted. As an incentive, they could keep their rifle when the war ended. The Sharps were a breechloading weapon which used a paper or linen cartridge.

I feel really stupid and I apologize. I should not be allowed to write after 9:00 pm. I totally misspoke and was just too lazy to get up and look.

My Winchester is the Centennial issue. From 1866 - 1966. I wasn't even close I did not mean to mislead anyone. Sorry.
