The only way to know for sure is to "cc" the head. Easily done on a flathead because you don't have to put valves back in the head. Smear a bit of transgel around the bread slice and stick a plexi plate with a hole to it. Have the hole at the edge of the chamber. Fill it up starting from a known volume in a pipette or use a syringe and keep track of volume.

Does this mean I just missed the old gal's birthday?

Currently only planning one, @Andydodge -
Does this mean I just missed the old gal's birthday?

Right. Nice to be going through it on it's 80th birth date. Still in service. Just wasn't sure if it was a blatant date. Ford date codes are all, well, codes and that's all I'm really familiar with. Seems too easy on this one. Lol -
Got done stripping the block and spun it around looking for numbers. Seems 6-16-37 is a significant date for the coupe. Assuming it's an actual date and not just a coincidence.

Almost done but ran out of time. Still need to pop out that front core plug and get the water tube out. Looks like the motor has been done before. Bore is 3.140". Crank looks good but haven't mic'd it yet. Rings are wore right out. Cylinder bores look pretty good. No major scoring. Bearings were full of crap. The soft metal did its job and captured a lot of contaminants. Timing chain was pretty loose. A couple of valves were really stuck, but they disn't seem bent Closer inspection next weekend may reveal a different story. That filter like oil pickup screwed into the third main cap... Does that get replaced? Need to figure out where to tap into the block to add a remote full flow filter. And loads of small parts to blast and paint. This will take all summer.

My understanding is that's normal for the early motors, Don. Problem solved. Well, one of them. The tube looks like it will be coming out in pieces...

Should be torn down by end of day. Couple questions; 1. Is this a regular core plug or freeze plug kind of thing in the head that I'd knock out prior to hot tanking this cylinder head? 2. Are the core plugs in the block easily knocked out like a standard V8? Or are the resting against a stop in the block and I need to pull them with a slide hammer.....? Water pump removal is proving difficult.

Generator, Starter and Voltage regulator restoration
thebeebe5 replied to thebeebe5's topic in P15-D24 Forum
I'll swing by there and give them a look. Thanks! -
'37 P4 While everything's out for my overhaul I want to get these items checked. No issues to this point. Generator charges fine. Regulator regulates. Starter seems a bit weak. That's about it. Anyone have a place they recommend for going through these items? Would love to find a place in Phoenix to handle it and keep it local, but not sure where to start looking.

Progress. Now, with 12 engine stands in the shop I can't find one that will adjust narrow enough.... Might have to get on the mill and make something...

This thing is a bit of a pain... I think I have all the bolts out. All the nuts off the trans mounts as well, and I was able to get it to move posterior enough to drop the flywheel off the flywhel bolts which wouldn't have happned except the bellhousing did move to some extent. Assue it's dowled like a more modern trans. Do I just need to lift the ass-end of the motor enough to clear the trans mounts and pull it off? Is there a hidden bolt somewhere that I'm missing ? Two at the top from the trans side: two each from the engine side (per side) and as I said there's now a small gap. Refresher, it's my '37 coupe.

Want to stick with original motor and stuff. This car is unmolested AFAIK. I'm a pack rat. If I pull original parts I'll feel like I have to save them rather than discard them. Rather just put them all back together... Also, I'd have to pay for a crank and rods then too. If the crank cannot be reused (don't know yet) then I'll Make an alternative plan. My only reasoning.

Whole thread is a great read. Considering options for the 201 in my '37. Will likely stay quite stock (including crankshaft) for this build. Thinking custom pistons for a CR bump and modern ring pack at this point. Still perusing past threads for modification info. @martybose, everything at my pal's shop gets honed with a torque plate, so if I can't find one for the 201 we'll make one. And a really careful valve job. What CR have folks been running in this engine on pump gas? And, out of curiosity, for those that went turbo , is there a maximum boost this engine can handle before blowing head gaskets becomes a problem?

I'd have to go with an early 40's truck. Don't need another car in my stable.

This is the stuff I'm hoping for, fellows! John, that web site looks perfect. Hopefully a one-stop-shop once I decide what's needed. Keep the tips coming!

I'll be doing both engine and transmission on my '37 this summer as can be seen in my "time for an overhaul" thread. Have searched the forums and found some information, but is there one source or place to get trans rebuild info? I see Bernbaum's has gasket sets and some parts. Anyone have a source for other parts or synchros? Mine are shot. Any sources, tips, tricks etc. will definitely be appreciated.

Got the trans and flywheel out, but that's about all. That darned bellhousing is being a PITA... Any tips or tricks for getting it free of the crossmember? The only bad thing about doing this at the shop is that I won't get back to it until next Saturday. But the benefits are fantastic. I'll never be able to work without a lift again....
-
I'll check that crossover closely. Doubt I'll get it torn down today. Too many things going on. Trans is out, and I hope to have the engine on a stand when the day is done.

Compression's down. Puking oil. It's time. This motor has not been done. Those are original miles. I did a valve adjust and carb work back when I got it. Just hasn't any oomph.

Just about to get started pulling the engine/trans in the '37. At 60333 miles its due. Way down on power. I'll update this thread with progress. Have enjoyed reading the engine overhaul tips in other threads and will continue to do so.
