  1. I've got the 53 Chevy my Dad purchased new 2 weeks before I was born. Drug it out of the barn the other day and got it running for the first time in about 10 yrs. Still has original rods and it isn't knocking! I rebuilt it in '69 w 95K on it and she still sounds good. Wonder where the Japs were getting these engines from?

If you're in an area where snow/salt or mud is an issue you may want to make sure that you have some type of drain installed to allow moisture and kicked up sediment to drain or so that you can flush out the frame. Toyota just did a massive truck recall on a large age spead of their trucks due to the boxed frame rotting to the point of failure. I also believe they changed the design of the frame to a more open type based on the problems they were having. Mike
  3. Evolution at work! Mother nature is weeding out the slow ones-just hope he doesn't take some innocent folks with him on his way out. I saw a rig like that come apart on the Mass Pike a few years ago-made a mess for a half mile.
  4. Merle-I do just what Norm does, but I was also thinking of using the adapter that Gravely used to convert from the cannister style filter to the spin on. Probably a better filter media (don't know if that makes a lot of difference on a bypass) but the replacent filters are less than half price of the old type. I only really put enough miles on both of my old Mopars to do an annual filter change so I'm not sure if it'd be cost effective or not. Mike

  6. Not sure, but you may want to check the connections at the regulator and make sure its well grounded, and clean the points. It sounds like the tapping is allowing the coil to pull in the contact tisp by either making the ground, or some other connection. Mike
  7. If I remember correctly from my 36 Plymouth-those washers are cuppedo or slightly concaved-or is this another senior moment? Mike
  8. GB-try another rotor and/or another cap. I spent the better part of a morning once trying to figure out why a 4 cyl Evinrude didn't have spark after a tuneup. The problem ended up being the brand new rotor that I bought was defective. Put the old one back in and it fired right off. We looked under a magnifying glass to see what the problem was and couldn't find a thing wrong with it-but it was the culprit. Its the simple ones that get ya. Mike

Yup-if a guy successfully steals a PH truck with all of the eccentricities (foot starter, 3 on tree or floor, manual choke, etc) we can tell the police: "I didn't see him, but I'll bet he's got gray hair and a pot belly. I know he's at least middle aged". And even if he got a 20 minute head start at wide open throttle he'd only be down the road a piece.... Mike

  11. I wear an 8 and that comes with its own problems! Just to keep this thread related-I replaced the broken lugs on my 1 ton w right handed threads and I haven't lost a wheel yet! Mike

  13. Does anyone know if a 3 speed from a '40 1/2 ton will bolt into a 49 3/4 ton? Is there a difference in the driveshaft drums on these two trannys? Mike
  14. Ditto-did my own. It'll help you get to know your truck. If you deviate from the factory color coding make sure you make note of the colors used. Down the road that may be very helpful! Mike
  15. Aaron: One other thing you may want to check is the thermostat. I'd put it in an "old" pot of water and bring it to a boil and see what temp it actually opens at. You may have a bad new thermostat. I've never used the newer type stat in my old stuff so I don't know if there are issues with this or not, but I do know my 36 Plymouth and 52 PH are the fastest heat builders I have-they're both up to at least 160 and able to put out heat in less than a mile and a half of driving. Both use the older type 160 stats. Mike
  16. Assuming your radiator and water distribution tubes are both in good shape on the first run of the day it may appear to overheat for a bit. If I remember correctly the temp pickup is towards the rear of the engine and thermostat is of course at the front. The coolant in the block will warm up and allow the thermostat to open, and then when it gets the ambient temp coolant that was in the radiator on startup it may close again temporarily until the water that has entered the block comes up to a temp high enough to allow the thermostat to open again. My 78 Dodge slant six pickup does this, and so did an Astro van we used to have. Mike

  18. I posted this on the technical archives-wrong forum. I've been reading the posts on this from folks that have converted their driveshafts from the original trunion type to the newer style x u joints. Can anyone provide the name of a shop somewhere in the Northeast that has done this work for them? Any success or horror stories are appreciated. Thanks. Mike
  19. Reg-luckily yours wasn't the speedy bleed version. I had that once in my 36 Plym-gets your attention real quick! I always make sure the emergency works-but the driveshaft brakes on the MoPars means you've got 1 wheel brakes once you lock up a wheel unless you've got a posi. Guess that's why you'll never catch me tailgating in anything. Mike

GB-just a guess, but since you said they were really tight its possible that one of the concentric adjustments backed off bringing the shoe closer in at the bottom requiring the top to travel further out than they normally do. I'm also wondering if your master cylinder plunger got hung up in the down position. Another possibility is that one of the shoe tabs wasn't seated all the way in the cylinder slot which may have been causing the tightmess. Was there ever any DOT3 in that system since the rebuild? Just guesses-I had to adjust mind this weekend too-lots of pedal just no stop! Mike

  22. If the linkage is free (plunger) there is likely a wrapped return spring that is broken. I have seen these as swap meets. They look similar to the choke heater spring, but much higher tension. Mike
  23. Mine goes to a couple of cruises and local shows a week. Went to one 40 miles away this past Friday and its still April. Lots more to get done on it this year to extend her legs. Point of clarification GB-the Macungie Show is the put on by the ATCA (Antique Truck Club of America) not the ATHS-there will be members of both great groups there-we're all related by trucks! Mike
