  1. For the past year or so I have had problems getting the car straight in to reverse. If you shifted in to second first then reverse it worked fine no problems. Going straight to reverse caused the gears to grind 25% of the time or so. Nothing major. I checked the clutch throw and linkage, and everything looked good. So I just lived with the problem. Now it has decided that sometimes it likes to pop out of second. Not while driving, but just right after you put it into gear. I had found that if you keep your hand on the shifter until its fully engaged it would be okay. But today when I held the shifter in gear and released the clutch I noticed that the clutch pedal wouldn’t return. When you let the shifter return to natural the clutch would pop back out. So should I look at the clutch, linkage or transmission to start fixing this. Luckily I don’t need second to drive around with the hydrive.
  2. lou, im planning on adding a/c to the car and was planning to run the compressor off the crank on the passanger side. i have been told on here that i should get a second pulley and have them welded together. does that sound like a good plan? or do you know of a easier way?
  3. mines in the car still i will see if i can get a pic of it.
  4. one that dosnt cost a $100 dolars. im okay with used
  5. still looking... does anyone know where to get one?
  6. why not find one from a 54 and adapt it to fit? does anyone have any photos of the 54 set up?
  7. man that was fast. thanks i just didnt want to damage the glass more and have to find a windshield. that would not be fun or cheap
  8. i have a small rock chip on the windshield of the plymouth, (less than dime size, but spreading) can the glass repair shops use their repair methods on our windshields? Does the repairs work on our type of glass?
  9. I have had the '53 for 17 years now. it was my first car. given to me by my grandmother. It was purchased new by her father. never left the family. in fact from 1965 to 1995 it never left the garage.
  10. while driving the plymouth to work this morning. I stopped at a light and the buy behind me ran up and knocked on my window and told me "that my left rear tire or axel was wobbeling 1/4" to 1/2" while driving" what could cause this other than the lug nuts being loose? i just had the brakes bleed , maybe they took the wheel off?
  11. kinda sound like we got the same problem.
  12. okay, lets see if i can clarify. there was a typo in my original post. the rear lines are 15 years old, so the first thing im going to do is to replace that. the brakes stop good still, and the pedal is firm after the first use each trip. it does not feel "soft" when you use it. when the m/c was going out the brakes had a spongy feel, this is not the same. i guess it should be called a low pedal. i think i have the all the original equipment. when i adjusted the brakes after rebuilding. i spun the tire and tightend the cam bolt on the backside untill the brake engaged then back off 1/4 turn. i did this for each wheel cylinder. I have had local break repair shop look at them and they say they are adjusted properly and they are the ones that bleed them last week.
  13. yes, yes, and yes, and a differnt clutch i think
  14. i have been told that it is difficult to convert back to a standard three. I drove it today and the clunk was not as noticble as today. I hope that it is not the transmission going out. that would be a tough one to replace.
  15. lou, ... Tim.. Who around here would be able to set these up properly? do yall recommend anyone?
  16. havnt checked them, but wouldnt they "clunk " in forward also?
  17. okay i have developed a new problem. i have a 53' w/ hydrive. when you put it into reverse as you let off the clutch with the brakes on, the car makes a loud thuds and physical shakes just for a slplit second. what could be causing this? clutch? transmission failing? if i had to describe the sound i would say it sound and feels like if i had a broken motor mount and the engine was shifting.
  18. i have replaced all wheel cylinders (front and rear), front hoses and rebuilt the master cylinder. and i stil have a soft pedal. the first time you push the pedal it goes to within a 1" of the floor. after you have used a few time it is 3" off the floor. i can not get it firmer than that. i even had (paid, professional) someone bleed them for me. no luck still the rear lines are 5 years old and he thinks that is where im letting air in, but if air was coming in through the lines wouldnt the pedal slowly get soft not be soft imediatly after bleeding? the car stops good. it will lock up all 4 tires if you cram on them at 30. so in my wife word am i over anyalizing and not just enjoying
  19. the wife and i had our pictures taken recently and used the car as a prop. here are a few. Im a lucky man. leah yetter did them and she was a pleaure to work with so if you in middle georgia and you need photography work.....
  20. i got distracted and left my keys in the car with them in the on position for about 3-4 hours. the radio and lights were off, so there was no draw on the battery and the car started right up, but did i damage the coil? should i get another one just in case?
  21. did the dodge have the same size engine as the plymouth?
  22. 53 got them also
  23. rock auto was one listed ofr us it is a carter #m847. it is listed for $51 . is it not the right one? http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=296246
  24. with rebuild kits that expensive why wouldnt i just buy a new one from rock auto for $55. i was hoping the kits were a lot less
  25. I installed my new carb last night and it has all the provisions to hook up the electric sisson choke. I tested the unit by touching the wire to the battery post, and the unit would respond. I hooked it up to the post going to the started on the selinoid. When the car was cold as you start the car the choke would snap shut closed. started up great. after driving around i wanted to see if the choke was fully open so i removed the air cleaner and looked. It was wide open but when i started the car, i noticed the choke did not snap shut. Is this how this unit is supposed to work? does it only close when the unit is cold?
