  1. Here is the NAPA number for the kingpins you need. 2621231 They won't have a listing, but they are in their system. When I bought a set about 16 months ago they had 2 somewhere, I think in a warehouse in Ill. The cost more than the newer ones, about $80, but I guess they knew they were getting scarce. Might be more in their system, they'll just have to look.
  2. About 3 years ago I bought a '42 Plymouth 2 door sedan in maybe a little better shape. I gave $1500 and at the time I thought I paid a little more than it was worth, but I liked the car. I'd really be surprised if yours brought more than that.
  3. I thought it would be no chrome, but the bumpers are chrome. My 42 Plymouth has no chrome at all. Bumpers, headlight/tail light doors are silver paint, as is the rest.
  4. As the owner of a 42 Plymouth, I can tell you of one surprise I had. I figured parts would be non existent, since only 1/4 as many cars were built. I found just the opposite. They stopped making the cars, but many parts were made. I find that if a 42 only part comes up on ebay, I'm usually the only bidder. I've gotten all new gauges, NOS in the box, for a decent price. All the badges, etc. too. These one year only parts were all cheap. A new in the box speedometer for $120? You couldn't have one rebuilt for that. Parts do pop up and there is little competition. Most running gear parts are common to other years, so it's really not a big deal. The other thing is, you'll have a more unusual car.
  5. Well, I have the COE, but this seems like a pretty unusual thing to drop in a little something. I know a guy with a stuck 413 flathead 6, I should try to trade.
  6. The big motor is now in my shop. Sometime I need to figure out what to do with it. For now it's a mental exercise to come up with ways to make use of it. One thought - put it in a 48 panel I have. It's much longer and heavier, so it'll stick back more than the 218 Dodge put in. And it's heavier, so it might need to go even farther back for weight. Either way, shifting would be a problem. I'm wondering if it would be possible to mate an automatic overdrive to it? Since it has 6 intake ports, it could use individual port fuel injection. I know nothing about fuel injection. Anyone know of a website to educate the unknowing about fuel injection? In my dream state I can imagine that the big 7 main, heavy duty beast with a hot cam, compression bumped up a bit, fuel injection and headers would be quite an impressive hunk of iron.
  7. Yes, if you get the floor pieces out you can remove the box. Pull the pitman arm off the shaft and it'll come out. Maybe with it on, but then you'd have to remove the tie rod end. I've taken 2 out recently with the wheel on.
  8. I believe the 48 to 53, 1/2 to 1 ton, dodge and fargo are interchangeable. I have a 48 dodge half ton, 49 3/4 ton, 53 1/2 ton and a 51 fargo 1 ton. I've swapped several around and all appear to be the same. As you've mentioned, some mounting brackets are different, but the boxes all seem to be the same. From what I've disassembled, internals seem the same, but I'm not as sure of them. Sort of like transmissions, most will interchange, but internals are not all the same.
  9. I just picked up a running '52 331 ci big six (30") with transmission and driveshaft. I'm not sure yet what to do with it, but cramming it into a '48 half ton panel I have seems pretty interesting. It would entend nearly to the driver's seat, but what the heck!
  10. Thanks. I talked to them at a car show a year or two ago, but had forgotten about them. The more I think about it, I might just sandblast, fill all the divits and paint it silver. It's far from a show car. I'm supposed to be the transportation for my nephew's wedding in a month or so. My wife wants it to have a bumper, but the requirement so far has not included chrome.
  11. My wife wants me to put the front bumper back on the 40 Dodge sedan. Needs chrome bad. A few years ago I checked with some company that basically did an exchange and it was about $500 for front and back, including guards. I just called bumper boyz and they want $375 just for the front. Any thoughts out there? It might just get sandblasted and silver paint!
  12. I aquired another NOS sector gear today, part #667217. The parts part number number search at http://www.collectorsautosupply.com/search/index.htm shows it to be for a 37 Dodge or Plymouth. I would be surprised if it didn't fit other years. Can anyone add to the information on this part? I got another part that I'm not even sure what it is, PN 1379471. Any help on this? I also got another part, a set of new gears for an oil pump, but they are much bigger than ours. They had no part numbers. I'll try to get a picture or two later, maybe someone will know what they are for.
  13. So my 4.11 uses one case, the 3.54 uses another. Do I need to find another case? is there a different offset to allow for different size gears or??? Anyone know what the difference in the cases are? I have a 49 3/4 ton rear end. I wonder what it has? I guess I need to look for stampings on it. I have a 49 Chrysler, but it's a complete unmolested, unrusted car. I'd have to pull the differential out of it.
  14. I was thinking that if the ring and pinion wouldn't fit my pumpkin (one response indicated it would fit starting in '41), but if I found a later pumpkin to work with, I'd have to make sure it and the axles were compatible. Another response sounds like an earlier one would also work, so maybe my 40 will work with them. There is one way to find out!
  15. sounds like I need to just pull the pumpkin out of my 40 dodge parts car and put it in. if it works I'll swap it with my driver. Thanks
  16. Sounds like I'm one year off. I suppose I can find a newer pumpkin and install it? I have a 49 3/4 ton rear, and a 53 half ton rear. I wonder if either will take the ring and pinion and fit my housing? I'd guess, though, that the axle splines would be different. I'm guessing that 41 to 52 rear axles are pretty easy to come by as well. I wonder what is different from 40 to 41?
  17. I have a new ring and pinion I'd like to out in my 40 Dodge sedan. The new one is a 3:54 set. I'm a bit concerned, though, because there is a date of 1955 on it. I think I've read that through 54 is interchangable. I don't know if this is a manufacturing date or year it fits or what. Part numbers are 953579 (ring) and 953580 (pinion). I used the www.collectorsautosupply.com page to try to identify them, but nothing comes up. Can anyone tell me what I have and if it'll fit? I'd like to know before disassembly if possible.
  18. It's your browser or software running on your computer.
  19. You can only have one!!?? Don't tell my wife!
  20. the ones on your 49 are Cleveland u joints, used through 49. I think 50 was when they went to something else. Clevelands are hard to find.
  21. It was always a grease rack to me back in the 60's and early 70's when I did it for a living. Now I have a grease pit in my shop. I can't tell you how many times people have thought it was a place to hold waste oil.
  22. About changing the numbers - first, I thought the frame number matched the body number, not the motor, but regardless, in Missouri there is still a law on the books that allows for the number to be changed when you change the motor. I haven't looked it up lately, but I think the cost is $2. It's signed by the guy changing the motor (probably intended to be the mechanic or owner of the shop) and the owner. Filed with the state and the title is changed. I doubt it's been used in years, and I doubt even more if anyone at the DOR would have a clue what was going on. The good news is, as it was written there is no certification of the old motor number so a guy could put in a new motor, have it changed to the motor you have laying around and get a title brought up to date. I'm guessing most states have a similar old law on the books to handle the motor swaps. I'm also guessing most people never even used it back in the day, leaving the mismatching numbers hanging around.
  23. I used them on my 55 Plymouth many years ago and thought they were fine. When you install them, pop the bead out like normal. It'll push the portawall out as it pops. then deflate, use the wide tool that breaks down the tire to push it in (without breaking it down), working all around, re-inflate. the shipping looked outrageous, though.
  24. I got some pictures but can't post from the iPhone. I did see that it's not a place for a parking light, just a flat spot on one side/top/bottom. steering sector was a 31- 33 or so Plymouth, syncros were 35 - 39 Plymouth. Wish I still had my 35 Plymouth coupe to use them in.
  25. I'll get pictures, maybe later tonight. Two pairs, both go in the fender, one has a place for the parking light on top. Numbers didn't come up on that parts locater thing above.
