My UTE is finally on it's way to the restoration shop
Labrauer replied to Lee Exline's topic in P15-D24 Forum
In all my days I haven't ever seen that car and now that I have I love it. I had no idea that car even existed any where. It reminds me of the elcamino but has a much better look. I sure would like to find one of those with the steering wheel on the right side of the car like the American cars. Where were these made, here in the USA or over seas? What a good looking car. -
Thanks for the comments guys. I have started to hook up all the emergency lights and wire the ignition switch. Today I installed the siren and the megaphone and tomorrow I will put the handles on the hood install the battery to test it all. Hopefully it will all work as planned. I'll keep posting pictures of the progress if interested.

I put halogen conversion on my 6 volt and it makes all the difference in the world in seeing in the dark. Halogen light are the best for being able to see whats a head of you in the dark

I think we are most like Wayne in the fact that we go to the car shows not needing any car parts but end up getting something to bring home anyway. I know that is the way I am even if I have a part at the house sometimes if the price is right I will just get another one just in case I need it some day.

You know sometimes you just do what you have to do no matter what the cost or what time it takes you to do the project. I have a six year old grandson that has Curable Pulse (CP) that just loves Fire Trucks. He has ask me if I would build him one. Well as you know what the answer to his question was I just didn't quite know how big nor if it was in my ability to build one. I started thinking that I have a couple of old lawn mowers in the back that I could possible turn into a Fire Truck so the old mind started turning with great speed. If I was to build one that was motorized his older brother would have to drive it or I would which to me would be a pleasure seeing him smiling all the way. So here's my story: I got one of the old lawn mowers out of the pasture and began to disassemble it piece by piece until just the frame was there. Worked on the engine and made sure it ran and was alright. Took the frame and cut into just to add 20" to it and welded it up again. Took some measurements and went to a Iron Works place to purchase square tubing in 11 gauge. After a few scratch ups on paper I decided in order for me to drive this thing I was going to have to make it large. What I came out with is from bumper to bumper 9' and side to side 45" wide. Welded up a frame that size and welded it to the mower frame as you can see in the pictures. Had some sheets of 4 x 8 x 1/2" plywood in the wood shop that was just the old sheathing type that I am using for the body. Now I know what his favorite color is but I ask him what color would his Fire Truck be if he had one and just as I suspected he answered his color of Orange. I tried to explain that most Fire Trucks were red but he wouldn't have it, it had to be orange his favorite color. This is what I have got constructed so far in the picks and let me tell you I have had a hard time keeping the secret from him as this is going to be his Christmas Present this year and by the way watch out for those darn saw blades they will get you when you least expect it.

Oh heck just stand on your head with your feet over the front seat and you'll do just fine. I have rewired my two cars this way and I'll admit it isn't a conferrable position to be in but it work for me till the blood rushed to my head and I lost all train of thought. I think if there is a will there is a position for every job. Good luck.

Hey Sharps40 do you want to see it?

Thanks for all the great answers guys but I still need to get one more answer from you all. Will a 218 motor carry the requirements and have the horse power to run an air conditioning unit if switched to a 12 volt system? Thanks in advance, Larry

I did not know that cars and trucks shared the same assembly line.

I guess we all learn something new every day. -
Greg why would you install two power circuits that work independently? I guess I am not following what you are doing. Is there an advantage of doing this and what is the advantage?

Does the fuel pump have a glass bowl on the bottom of it? Mine does and it is always full but the inline fuel filter is like half full while running at a slow speed but when the engine is raved up and slowing back down the filter fills up with gas how ever it goes back to half full after the car sits. Take the line loose on the carb and turn the car over a few revolutions and see what kind of flow you have coming out of the line. Could be that the diaphragm in the fuel pump has a small hole in it making it loose it's prime. You might also check the carburetor pump piston to see if it has dried out and not able to pump gas. As far as the battery cables getting hot and smoking that is a no no. Check the size of the cables as a 6 volt car needs a cable of no less than 0 gauge and probably would be ever better double 0 gauge and if your cables are of one of these two sizes I would look for a short or a loose connection between the battery and the ground or make sure the cables are hooked up right to the engine. The guy's that have answered your questions before me have great ideas of what to check and do also so it is just a trial and error thing. Good Luck.

Hate to see you sell the truck but I can understand as I have two 48 P15's in my garage taking up space but I can live with a little less space and by the way my garage is 30 x 36 two story and I still don't have enough room. I had to build a 24 x 26 carport on the back of the garage as to get my sons 52 ford project that's been in my garage for 18 years torn apart out of my way for my cars. Sometimes we have to sacrifice some space to do what we love and to keep what we love. Here is a pick of the back of the garage and what I did so I can drive the cars right through either end as soon as my son's truck is out which will at the rate he is moving will be another 18 years probably. Remember the times you had with your dad and the truck as memories will always be with you. Good luck in what ever you decide.

I don't have a dodge truck but I had a 52 ford truck that did that to me a long with wondering the road. I just couldn't seem to find the problem and did the same as you posted all new front end parts and still a problem. I ended up finding an old man mechanic and he discovered that the shims under the front springs (between the spring and axle) where put in backwards. The wedge was to the front instead of being to the back. Now I don't know if these dodge trucks have the same type wedges or not as I said I never owned an old dodge truck but if it does I would definitely check into this. Just one of my experiences with a front end wobble on a different model truck. Good luck and if you can find a old mechanic like I did he may be able to find the problem. Good Luck

Need help putting a value on a 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe.
Labrauer replied to Travis31415's topic in P15-D24 Forum
I purchased around three or four years ago a 48 Plymouth four door sedan from a guy that was in running condition but needed a brake job and a few other things done like redo the seats, adjust the doors where they would close with the touch of the finger. I offered him $3500 for the car and ended up paying $4000 for it. This car had no rust and the paint job was in a very good condition. It was drive-able but the brakes were in need of work. I have spent around $1000 on doing the brakes complete from new master cylinder, new brake lines, new brake linings, new wheel cylinders, brake springs, ect. All the glass was good with no clouding or cracks and it has a radio which works as everything else does. I don't know what your father-in-law is looking to get for the car but from what I read in your post it sounds like a fare price for me would be around anywhere from $1000 to $1600 for the car. You may be able to get the engine running with little money spent but then again I would see if it would turn over by hand or a wrench on the crank shaft nut. Rebuilding an engine could cost easily $1200 to $3000 depending on what and if you want up grades. Here is the price that Hagerty has for a 48 P15 four door in condition # 4: #4 cars are daily drivers, with flaws visible to the naked eye. The chrome might have pitting or scratches, the windshield might be chipped. Paintwork is imperfect, and perhaps the fender has a minor dent. The interior could have split seams or a cracked dash. No major parts are missing, but the wheels could differ from the originals, or the interior might not be stock. A #4 car can also be a deteriorated restoration. "Fair" is the one word that describes a #4 car $1800 to $3000.- 20 replies

My hood release cable (wire) has broke right where the hood stop and screw is. I have tried to repair it by adding the broken piece that was on the other side by bending it into a little circle and the other end into a little circle and JB weld it but had no luck in the repair as it just came loose again. Has anyone got any suggestions on how to fix without having to spend $238 dollars for one on ebay? Is there a way to remove the handle from the current one and just find a wire of the same diameter and do it that way. I thought that maybe I could use a cable from a lawn mower shop if long enough and only if there is some way to release the pull knob and install on new cable. Open for suggestions.

One of the reasons I was looking at going 12 volts instead of 6 volts is to give the starter more turning power and maybe in the future adding air conditioning but haven't discussed or come across any information if a 218 engine will carry the load of air conditioning yet. I don't real;ly see why it wouldn't carry the load as other 6 cylinder cars are capable of doing it. Even with the right battery cables and grounds the engine turns over ever so slowly. I have heard and read that going 12 volts make you engine turn over faster and starts faster which I don't know to be true but I believe the people on this forum that say it does. Just a thought and feed backs are more than welcome on the subject

I am wanting to install a fuse block in my P15 coupe to have fuses on all the switches and all the components on the car. I am thinking of changing from 6 volts to a 12 volt system but before I do that rewiring is a must I think. The car was rewired a few years ago with the correct wire size for 6 volt system so I don't know if I can still use the bigger wire used for a 6 volt system or not. I a wondering if anyone has done this and what type of fuse block you used and how many fuses did you use for a completed system. If you have pics I can look at it will be appreciated also.

I just don't understand people these days and the way they have no respect for a human life nor their own. I have to wonder a few things one of which is blaming the parent for not teaching their kids right from wrong and not teaching them respect for themselves or anyone else. Second I have to put the blame partly on the system we live in today on taking the disciplining out of the parents hands and doing away with corporal punishment in the schools and home. Third I put the blame on the TV shows and videos kids have to watch and play these days being filled with violence and killings making it look like a wonderful thing to do. Fourth I put the blame on the government for raising taxes so far up that it takes both parents to work so they can make ends meet being at work all the time and the kids have no supervision after school. With all the illegals or whatever you want to call them coming over to the states committing crimes and our commander and chief (obama) letting criminals go to commit these crimes over and over doesn't help either and again with all this political correct crap they harp on doesn't help the matters any. I remember when I was growing up if you talked back to an adult or got into trouble at school or anywhere else you got disciplined (spanked) there and when we got home too. We learned to be polite to people no matter who they where or what color their skin was. I really feel sorry for the young folks these days in a way because society has put this on them on more ways than one. One other thing is that our schools have mummified down the teaching of kids and teach only in order for the kids to be able to pass those stupid state test so they can get more money from the government and state. What happened to Reading, Math, Science, History ect. that we learned in school and the way we learned it by good old teachers that took pride in their teachings and not be worried that if their students don't pass those test they will be fired. My daughter was a school teacher and got out of it because if one of her students didn't do a damn thing all year the lowest grade she could give them was a 50 and then on top of that if they did get that 50 grade the parents wouldn't get on to the kid they would attack the teacher saying it was her fault they didn't pass the class. We are so worried we can't keep up with the Joan's and what they have that we overlook what we ought to be looking at.

Wish we had junk yards around here like that. Around here if the cars and trucks are older than 6 years they destroy them by crushing. I have never seen a yard like that with old cars and I guess it is best because I would go crazy and want to buy every car there.

Driving around in the 48 coupe I have noticed that I have a sway or leaning action on turns and on a road that has an incline on it while driving. I thought that I would check the rear springs, torsion bar and grommets to see if I could see something broke or come loose. I have installed new shocks last year. Nothing had come loose and the rear springs looked good so I thought it might be the coil springs that needed replacing so about a year ago I purchased a set of coil springs for my 48 P15 coupe and never had the chance to install them till today. I thought that since I have the engine out of the car it would be a great time to tackle the job. After I got them out and looked them over I decided that I would go and tackle the job once and for all. Took the old spring out from under the drivers side and set it aside not thinking just wanting to get finished. I happen to notice when I took the other side off that the new springs were about 1 3/4" shorter than the old ones. I pondered around and finished the job anyway. My question to you guys is what effect if any will these shorter spring do and is it possible that they will make my ride much different? I am also pondering if when I install the engine again and drive will it be a possibility that the control arms will bottom out on bumps and pot holes? I know I will have to go get the front end lined again for toe end ect. Just wanting some feed back on the effects of 1 3/4" shorter coil springs.
