  1. Thanks for the input - I've been putting it off for some time but the consensus is to it now. I called the insurance company and they cover 80%. Guess I'll do it now while I'm still working and still insured. Again thank you I feel a little more confident about the procedure. I wonder how long it will be before I can push in the clutch.
  2. The fact is I have faith in your opinions. This is a most cool board. That said I have a question a little from the beaten path: has anyone had a knee replaced? I'm looking for pros and cons. I have no cartilage left and it's bone on bone. I'm a perfect candidate but a little apprehensive. any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
  3. I will let you all know tomorrow. Thank you so very much.
  4. This is just a thought and I wouldn't know how to implement it but let me run this up the pole and see who salutes. I belong to the Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association. Once every couple of years they come out with a book and the address and phone number of all the members. People, of course, all agree and are willing to offer aid and assistance to anyone traveling. I don't know how hard that would be or if anyone would be willing but it would be a handy guide. That said once my car is in running condition I'm going up 99 to Sacramento then down 80 to San Francisco then south on 101. I would be more than happy to stop by and meet with anyone on that route.
  5. What a great slide show! Not only that but what a great selection of pictures. Every time I see that I am sorry that I didn't take more pictures of my car. Especially now with the digital cameras. You've got a good looking car - it's a shame you can't enjoy the labor you put into it.
  6. This Saturday a friend is coming over and we are going to run the car through all its paces. Check everything - points, plugs, condenser. First thing is the gas cap. Thank you. I know it's going to be something really easy. It is a new gas cap. What do I look for in a parts store - a no pressure cap? If this works I will scream so loud that you'll hear it where ever you are. Thank you gentlemen.
  7. Just thought I'd jump in here. I was a member of the POC years ago. The magazine always came so late that by the time I called on the ads whatever I wanted was gone. Since I found this forum there didn't seem any need to spend money on the POC. I still belong to the Vintage Chevrolet Club (since 1969) but the Plymouts have pushed the Chevy to a back burner.
  8. I hope you don't mind but I am going to share your story with my wife. Right now I can't get more than 10 miles from home without problems. Once I get the bugs out it is my plan to go from LA to Sacramento and back. When these cars were new people drove the snot out of them. It's a tool - they were made to be driven. What a great story.
  9. The car won't go more than 10 miles. It doesn't overheat. When it runs it purrrs. I took off the gas tank - clean. Replaced the coil - new. It has dual carburetors . I was driving down the road and it started sputtering like it was running out of gas. I pulled over checked the coil - was not hot. Put my hand on the gas line - also not hot. Closed the hood - pushed the button and it fired right up. Would the condenser do that? The choke is not hooked to any thing - could that be sucked closed? I'm at my wits end. This week end I'm going to boil out the carbs. What I don't get is it will sit an idle for 30 minutes, it will drive back home without a sputter. But 3 times going less than 10 miles it quit. There's not a lot left to check. Time for thinking caps.
  10. I'm going to try to go to the Fair in Sacramento. Since I'm from the bay area I usually go up 99 to Sacramento and then down the 101 through the peninsula. If you could send me some more information it might be in the works. I'll be going the end of August first of September.
  11. How about we take a Zen look at this. When I think of all the cars I've parted with I cringe. But I never could have kept them all. I had two Triumph TR 250s which I truly loved but was not doing anything with them. A guy came by who really wanted them. This is going to sound silly - but I knew they were going to a good person and that made it easier. Have you ever had to give up a precious dog? Lost a girl to a better man? Same thing. If this guy is so persistent he may be the one to fix up the car like you haven't been able to do. When you see it go down the street all restored you should have the satisfaction of knowing you could have done that - but you let someone else do it. This probably sounds weird to people who don't "love" cars. I am still a little disappointed at the "cash for clunkers" program. I think they are wasting a lot of useful cars. Go with your heart.
  12. I have found the two (maybe three) hardest people to find is a good doctor and a good mechanic (sometimes a dentist). I took a car in (99 Blazer) to have the head gaskets replaced. The shop was clean and the mechanic didn't speak to me like I was an idiot. I felt that all the stuff he did and all the stuff he replaced was legitimate. There comes a point when we have to realize we can't do everything. I don't think I'm ever going to be a professional NASCAR driver - so I leave that to the pros. I sort of got off track. Speaking of the generator. When I got my P 15 it had been sitting out in a field in the desert for 20 years. I didn't even check to see if the generator was any good - I just took it in and had it rebuilt. Now I know the history of it and it gives me piece of mind. I did the same thing with the starter. It costs a couple bucks but it's worth it to know what you've got. This, of course, is just my 2 cents.
  13. I can't find the really truly 'before' pix. This is what it looked like when I tried to paint it - and when I had the pros do it. She's come a long way since I first saw her out in a field in the desert in Walker, CA.
  14. I got my 4 door in 2002 before I had a digital camera. I have pictures when I picked it up but I'm not sure how to get them on the computer. It sure has come a long way. I found some before pictures but I will need some time to post them. I am computer challenged. be right back.
  15. My daughter blew a head gasket on a 99 Blazer. I figured how hard could it be to swap out a head gasket. I couldn't get the plugs out. Took me an afternoon to get one valve cover off. I finally gave up and took it to a mechanic. They get $85 @ hr!! and I have to admit it was worth it. What's it going to be like with these hybrids? I can't even imagine how you would work on something like that. I go to the car show in LA (CA) every year and the cars are getting so complicated. Give me a flathead any day. How would you trick out an electric car? Technology is passing me by.
  16. There is so much talk and press about Woodstock and the 40 year anniversary. This doesn't really have anything to do with Plymouths but I never heard of Woodstock. I was in Chu Lai, Vietnam in 1969. That was my lost year. I guess the only wood stock I knew about was my M 14. Just a thought.
  17. Was this a garage find? The kind you hear about but never find. Sort of like an urban myth. What a beautiful car. It's getting scary for me - and probably why I appreciate the car so much - but I remember them. We had a 60 Plymouth station wagon when I was in high school. Went to the junior prom in it. Not the classiest but I took off the hub caps and painted the lug nuts white. Had to put the caps back on before I drove into the drive way. The 50s - that's when America ruled and cars were cars. No plastic fenders. And they still look good today. Like the others who wrote - I too am envious.
  18. This is a little off topic but I like your air cleaners. Did you make them?
  19. The *&^%$#@ coil. I was talking to a guy today and that's what he said. I've had the starter and generator rebuilt, new voltage regulator - it's running a coil that was on the car when I got it. I've read all the posts about heated coils and I don't know why I didn't think of it. At least I know the gas tank is clean. I don't know if this is true but a guy told me today that it's hard to get vapor lock with an electric fuel pump. Tomorrow I'm putting it all back together. I guess that's why we do this silly hobby - either that or an excuse to throw money away.
  20. I was talking to a guy today. I explained the symptoms and I had one of those slap your forehead moments. He said it sounds like the coil. Driving down the street and it just quits. Tomorrow I'm blowing air into the tank, getting new filters, and buying a new coil. Then I'm going to drive to Sacramento for the state fair. I appreciate all the help everyone has offered. oh btw: I couldn't find my service manual - I just bought one on line - today my wife asked me "Is this what you were looking for?" Never fails. So now I'll have an extra one.
  21. When I first joined the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America to get in they only took cars up to 48. Then all the guys with 56 and 57s started whining and they moved up the year. Now I believe it just has to be 20 years old so every year another car year is added. I think it's not a classic if it was built when I was in high school.
  22. Excellent. Thank you. I've taken all the plugs out of the tank, shined a light inside and it looks clean. I stuck a wire which I'm guessing went all the way to the filter. No blockage. Next step air. After that I guess I could rule out the tank. If it comes down to it I'll take the tank out of my 2 door and switch tanks. This is a lot of work for something I know is going to be a simple fix. I'm going to put a gas can in the trunk and go for a ride and see if that works. If I can't figure it out then the next step is tearing the carburetors apart.
  23. I am familiar with the concept of vapor lock but I'm not sure if I've ever experienced it. Does it just sputter and buck and slowly starve for gas or is it immediate and just shuts off? Would it matter that I have two carbs? It's happened twice in runs of 5 miles or less. The temp gauge was about 165° I didn't feel it was over heating. I've got the gas tank off. The car runs great when it runs. I think Saturday I'm going to put a gas can in the trunk and go for a drive. If it happens again I can rule out the tank. This is all very weird.
  24. Where would the vent be? It's interesting that there is a plate in the tank with a tube but I'm not sure what it is. The only ports is the tube that goes out and the filler that goes in. I'm going to check the parts book to see if they have an exploded view of the tank.
