Excellent!! Thank you very much. Both batteries are relatively new Optima. I am sure your advice will help. BTW: after putting it off for too many years I am having one knee replaced. It is bone on bone with a touch of arthritis. With all the talk about health insurance I figured I should get it done while I'm insured. My heart goes out to all the people with no insurance or who are under insured. I'm not trying to start anything here just wanted to state my good fortune. I am appreciative.

I am going in for knee surgery which will keep me out of the garage for about 6 weeks. I have a little trickle charger. Question - can I hook up two batteries together and plug the charger on one and have both batteries charge? I'm sure some of you old pros are laughing at this but I don't want to mess anything up. Better to ask.

I was putting in my gas tank and I don't think I ever noticed this before but is it supposed to sit so close to the exhaust pipe? It seems as hot as the pipe gets it can't be good. Somehow I didn't notice it when I took the tank off. Just curious.

Good advice - thank you. I guess that's what makes this hobby fun. There is always something going on. It's not really life threatening just keeps you on your toes.

I hate when this happens - I fiddled with wires, tightened connections, wiggled and moved things. So I don't know which thing I did worked. I drove to the gas station just to make sure the tank was full. Then I just went for a ride. As I was driving the gauge slowly moved up to full - I was very excited. Then with the same slowness it moved back to empty. During the 25 mile drive it just kept going up and then back down. So I know the gauge works - I just don't know why.
-
Back ground: I took the car in and everything worked. They took the instruments out to paint the dash. When I got it back the gas gauge didn't work. How hard can that be? I tried to trace the lines out with an ohm meter. Couldn't get power to the fuel sending unit in the tank. The car is a 48 P 15 - I figure I'd just look at the 47 - whoops there's a difference. In the center post on the dash gauge of the 48 there are 2 wires. One is blue - don't remember the other right now. When I look at the 47 there is only one wire from the center post - also blue. I believe it goes to the ignition. I was looking at the wiring diagram and it shows a brown wire but it looks like it's coming out of the back of the gauge. I don't want to swap gauges until I know what's going on. I mean we're only talking about 3 wires - how hard can it be?

Thank you - that's this week ends project. I'll let you know how it works. I never tried oven cleaner - think I'll go with the brake fluid first.

I know I should search for this but I'm not sure what it's called. The brown plastic name plate on the dashboard... How do you get the paint off? It has a waffle pattern on the back and it's full of paint. I'm afraid to use chemicals for fear of melting the plastic. It's weird because you can't really paint over anything. I was thinking of maybe a very light sand blasting. My dash is painted blue so I'm trying to figure out if I should paint it blue - hang with the brown or even just leave it clear plastic with the silver Plymouth. Ideas? My car is about 98% done. Now I'm down to all these little things. thanks guys

I don't understand why we are persecuting Cuba. I'm old enough to remember the bay of pigs. As I recall we supported Castro. When he didn't march to the beat of our drum we punished all the people. I really feel like it's the Cubans in Florida who are pushing this agenda. Sorry - this has been an annoying theme for me. I've seen the cars - what a treasure for us - a burden for them. They have been suffering for 40 years. There are people who don't know anything else.

The thread is getting cold - thought I'd sneak in a few pictures before it goes away. The air tankers were flying right over our house. Very impressive. Especially the big jet - I think it was a DC 10. I don't know how the picture of the car got in there... When we got the order to evacuate I put in on the street and was ready to hook up the tow bar. No way would I leave that behind. It's finally finished after 7 years. The other is just smoke - lots of smoke and ash.

nice video on youtube p15 video questions on video?

I don't have a picture of the back door just yet - but it's the same as the front door. Could this be the difference between a Deluxe and Special Deluxe? I've never seen them straight before... -

Okay - I hate to be picky but the stainless piece on your back door is straight across. It looks stock. Mine has a big curve in it. Did they come with 2 different interiors? I'll look to see if I can find a picture. just curious. -
Thank you for your prayers and concerns. The fire has passed my house but down the road I heard that 3 houses were lost. We also heard that 2 firemen were killed when their truck went off the road. My heartfelt thanks goes out to the firemen. They risk their lives for the little people. Doesn't matter if your house is $1 million or $100 they do their best to protect property. What a great group of people. Anyway the fire is still burning but I don't feel as threatened. Of course the wind could change and it's a whole new ball game. Also watching the air planes going over the house. Prop planes and jets. I've got some pictures - not sure if that's interesting...

When I went off to college I could put every thing I owned in my 1950 Buick. When I was in the service I could put everything I owned in a sea bag. How the times have changed. We got a robo call at 1:00 this morning saying we were to evacuate. We are running around trying to figure what's important. The first thing I am going to do is hook the Plymouth to a tow bar behind the truck. My wife takes the SUV. I've got a 47 in the garage with the gas tank out - that breaks my heart. How do we accumulate so much junk? How do we prioritize the irreplaceable? I've never been in this situation before. Also the school I teach at is in the Angeles Forest - I was on line and it seems they are being evacuated. For those far away it won't mean anything but those close both Big Tujunga and Little Tujunga have been closed down. And I just got my Plymouth back yesterday. 7 years! Yesterday I got all the little things done. A hole in the carpet to get to the master cylinder. Missing stainless pieces. It's so beautiful. If I had more tow bars I'd take more cars. thanks for your concern - it will be okay - as I write this a big water dropping tanker just flew over. tootles

Always remember - You can never have too many cars

This, of course, is nowhere near a topic but just wanted to share. I have lived in California my whole life. My grandmother was in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. I have never seen a tornado, hurricane, flash flood. I have been through some very minor earthquakes - things knocked to the floor. From my back porch I can see the Angeles Forest on fire. It's just moving slowly down the hill. There is so much ash it looks like snow. There is so much smoke it blocked out the sun. It was still over 100°. What an incredible force of nature. There are 4 fires in Southern California. It really doesn't mean much until you see the flames and know that anything in its way will be devoured. I've never seen a fire this close before. We drove to the top of a hill to look - I didn't take a camera, I didn't think it would take. I sincerely feel for those consumed by natural calamities - we are so helpless. I'm sorry - I don't mean to be maudlin. It was just quite a sight.

1948 Tucker story and LARGE picture file
Don Jordan replied to Frank Blackstone's topic in P15-D24 Forum
When I was a kid in San Francisco there was a museum near the Cliff House. We used to go there when I was in high school - cost .25 to get in. Cheap date. Anyway there was a Tucker in the museum. I still remember it. It was lost when the museum burned down. I think it was in the 60s or 70s. What a loss. I guess there really aren't too many people that have actually seen one up close. What a shame when treasures like that are lost. -
It's not the best picture. I'll see if I can get a better pic Saturday. I've got to pull it off because I didn't get it on straight. I thought I got slot A into groove B but I guess I missed. Driving down the road the bar is at 12 and 6 o'clock. It looks a lot better than the picture.
-
I had mine done for $250 - it looks brand new. I could take a pic but just imagine a brand new wheel. Give this guy a call: 661 252 9264 pretty amazing. He's in Acton, CA - north of Los Angeles.
-
I worry about the plates on my Plymouth - they are '48 CA plates. Of course I don't know what anyone would do with them - they are registered to me. But people will steal anything.

What I don't understand is why the American tax payer is paying for cars to be destroyed or so others can profit from them. What exactly is our benefit? I understand that car dealers got a shot in the arm - good for them. I understand that thousands of people now have car payments for the next 5 years. But I think both the car dealers and car buyers are going to wake up tomorrow with an after party hang over saying "I did what?" I don't mean to repeat my self but what did the tax payer get for his $2 Billion investment. No interest, no payback. We could have better spent the money starting another war some where. HMHO

I will keep you posted. If it works it will save me $215. Does the filter just float around inside the tank? Should I try to remove the piece that covers the filter? Thank you for your input - this has been a mystery to me. In all my years of playing with cars I've never run across this type of dilemma. Another reason this forum is the best.
-
I just got back from the radiator shop. They wanted $250 to cut the tank open and take the filter out. I just called Tanks, Inc and they want $215 for a new one. It doesn't look exactly right - I was wondering if anyone has tried one yet. Does it just bolt on with the old straps? Does it require any modification? It's going in a 2 door Sedan. I guess I'll try to blow the filter off - I've got nothing to lose now. I guess I could just strike a match to get a better look inside.
-
Two easy questions: I had been having trouble with my gas tank. I took it off and it appeared clean inside. Put it back and there was still a blockage. I blew air into the tank but the blockage came back. Today I went to a radiator shop and asked him about boiling it out. He said he would have to cut a hole in the tank to get to the filter. He's going to call me back with a price. Is there no other way? On e-bay I see new tanks for $250. Has anyone here ever got one? I've heard they take "slight modifications" which always scares me. That has the ring of "some assembly required." If it's going to cost over $200 to fix the old tank might as well get a new one. in advance thank you.
-
I knew it would be something easy - just finding it is hard. I took the tank off and it was clean inside. It was clean with a visual inspection. I put the tank back on and drove it. After 10 miles it choked for fuel. It's interesting that it always made it back home. Blew air through the fuel line. Took off the line at the carb. Fuel pump was not pumping very much gas. Blew air into the tank. Fuel pump started cranking out gas. That's it. Put it all back together - 10 miles same thing. Now I'm just up set and fed up. So I took the brand new, rebuilt gas tank off the 47 and put it on the 48. With my friend following me I took it on the freeway for about 35 miles. Purred - my speedo said 55 - 60 but my friend following me said 45 - 50. I don't care IT RUNS. Thank you all for your sincere input. I tried each suggestion. It was something in the tank - unseen. But now I have a new coil and gas cap. It's okay. I was able to drive it to the upholsterer so he could fix a few things. Pictures to follow.
