Old guy with a new car and introductions all around

Does anybody make a jump battery that is switchable between 6 volts and 12 volts? I'm cheap, and if I buy one,I want it to work with both my antiques and my modern stuff. -

l I LOVE that part in bold, and knowning farming families, have no problem at all believing it to be true. I grew up in a commercial fishing family on the Atlantic coast. My first job at age 13 was as a deckhand on a shrimping boat during summer vacation. Mostly,we did haul sieghn (sounds like "sane) fishing off the beach, but also did set netting in the sounds. I know for a fact the head of one local fishing family made a big beach haul and then had his truck break down, leaving the fish sitting in boxes on the beach, out in the hot sun. His solution was to tear the back seat and braces from the rear of his brand new Pontiac Grand Prix and shovel it full of fish and ice to haul to the market. People who make their living doing things like farming and commercial fishing tend to take a very practical approach to living, -

That's some serious "Twilight Zone" stuff! Sumbodie cue the music..... BTW,beautiful car,and impressive house. I am guessing the original owner had no problem paying cash for the car back in 41. -

Who is arguing? I am pointing out options that work better that trying to reach around the steering wheel in a moving car. As for anchoring a aftermarket console, you can use a strap glued to the bottom of the console with a short piece if 1/2 inch PCV with the webbing ran through it. Stick the tubing between the seat base and back, and it will anchor the console in place until you want to remove it. -

OK,I am assuming a "jumper pack" isn't a bunch of out of control teens,so what is it,how is it used, and does it eat very much? -

Yeah, but with a portable console, you get TWO coffee holders away from the steering wheel,a place to hold you sun glasses, fingernail clippers,rolaids,cd's,etc,etc,etc,AND......,a armrest. Plus you can move all that crap from one car to another every time you switch rides, and never be without your stuff. -

I bought one to use with my 03 "beater" truck because I like having a arm rest. The best thing about it is it is portable. You can take it out of what you are driving today and put it in something else tomorrow, and have your aspirin, sun glasses, etc, etc, etc with you regardless of what bench seat car you are driving. -

That 55-56 Plymouth looks hungry and viscious with that 55 DeSoto grille. I have a 55 DeSoto grille that I am going to put in my 6 cylinder flathead (3 carbs, high compression aluminum head, headers, duals) 51 Ford business coupe. This is one of the cars that won't be sold until my estate sale happens. People really freak out when they see a 6cyl flathead in a Ford. Thinking about painting the wheels red. Waddaya think? Still driving it occasionally now. Won't tear it down to redo it until I have every single damn thing I am going to need to put it back together, right down to the paint in the paint cans, sitting on my shop floor. I learned my lesson about this a while back. I'm a slow learner, but it finally sank in. I'd rather drive a "beater" than have a semi-show car still under construction in my shop. -

Not mine, but it COULD be yours! Spotted this unmolested, solid potential beauty on ebay for what *I* think is a bargain with a BIN price of 2 grand. Seems to be only missing a battery and even has a sun visor and period spotlight. NO,it is NOT mine, and I have no idea about who owns it. I know who WOULD own it if I were 20 years younger, though. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1948-48-PLYMOUTH-COUPE-ORIGINAL-REBUILDABLE/383725460139?hash=item5957d1daab:g:WuoAAOSwTjdfY8Wz -

Take it back. Engine oil and lubricating oil are not the same thing. Go to your local NAPA,O'Reillys,Advance Auto, etc, etc, etc, and buy a case of 30 weight non-detergent automobile oil. Next time you go back to that Car Quest, get a different counter person. -

I can't remember the name right now,but O'Reilly has a "house oil" in 30 wt non-detergent at a pretty good price. I bought a case of it a while back. I just recently dropped the oil pan in my 51 Vicky and decided I wanted to try 15w-40 in it to see how it does. It now has zero oil pressure at idle, and 40 psi going down the road,so I am switching back to 30 wt non-detergent for the time being. -
Can't advise you on the hubs, but I will advise you to go with the copper/nickel brake and gas lines. They never rust, inside or out,and you can bend them with your hands without them kinking. They are available everywhere.

A D-24 is a 46-48 Dodge. Forget Rotella or any other high detergent oil until you have driven the car for a while and determined how much,if any,oil it burns, and how much oil pressure it holds. IMHO,it's best to flush the base and change the filter a few times, too. After all,why bother to pull the oil pan to clean it out until you know how much oil pressure it holds and if it burns oil before you drop the pan to flush it out. Running it and flushing the oil while it is hot several times helps to clean out t.he oil passages, and if it is going to need new bearings,rights,and/or oil pump,do it all at one time. Once you know the engine is not going to be a problem, drop the pan, clean it out good, and THEN you can run modern high detergent oil in it. Until you do this, stick with a straight 30 or 40 wt non-detergent oil. Probably best to stick with a straight 30 or 40 wt detergent oil after you flush the system, too. I recently tried a 15W-40 detergent oil in my 51 Victoria, and it holds zero oil pressure at idle, and 40 psi running down the road. I don't like 0 oil pressure at any time,so I am going to drain it and go back to a 30 wt detergent oil. -

??? I've had a Knucklehead EL I put FLH flywheels, rods, and pistons into,in addition to an original "lightening" cam,and a SU carb off a Volvo, and it would flat FLY. Had a single seat, peanut tank.3/4 inch rake, and a 15 over 1947 Springer with drag bars. First bike to ever turn 8 second quartermile runs was a knucklehead Harley. IIRC,it was a Joe Smith bike. My pan was considerably slower, but it was my first Harley, and was stock before I put a stroker in it. Can't complain about it being slow when I bought it since I only paid 250 bucks and rode it home 50 miles away from where it was bought. My current ride is my second shovel, and due to old age its a basically stock fat bob, other than the 468 Sifton cam,S&S carb, and solid lifters. Does ok for a fat bike. If you own a modern (70's and newer} Harley with the Jap carb, you MUST take that thing off and throw it as far as you can into a land fill to keep it from ever appearing on another motorcycle. Replacing it with a S&S carb makes the bike seem like it has a supercharger on it. Before I put the S&S on it,it would fall flat on it's face when you tried to wind it out. With the S&S,it would pull the dresser front end off the ground when I would hit second with it wound out. -

I like the VW too,but for the life of me can't figure out how you can lower one that much and still have a suspension that works. Unless of course it has airbags and hydraulics. One of MY dirty little secrets is I freaking LOVE VW's. Always wanted a Karmen-Ghia,but due to blubber and back injuries,if somebody gave me one and I somehow managed to get into it,it would take the rescue squad and torches to get me out again. -

You might try spraying a little WD-40 or something similar through the hose heading to your wipers after turning the wipers on. Remember, many of these cars sit for decades without the wipers being turned on,and can use a little oilish moisture. Providing of course that your hoses are hard and cracked. If they are, replace them first and maybe the wipers will work because they are no longer leaking vacuum.
