  1. Try the guys over at the American Truck Hysterical Society forum, they are a very knowledgeable bunch on any old truck. They came up with a part number for the brake master cylinder for the 46 Fargo and the guy at the Navistar dealer was shocked to find it in stock at his warehouse...expensive, but in stock, new. http://forums.aths.org/InstantForum414/Forum14-1.aspx ps...if you're into old trucks, the daily "What am I?" is alot of fun and somedays extremely interesting: http://forums.aths.org/InstantForum414/Forum14-1.aspx
  2. Once again, if you remove the driveshaft, you can tow it with a tow bar without hurting the transmission. Then your concern would be the road conditions, which would also be a concern towing it with a tow bar while it was running, OR if you drove it. The way you described the condition of the car, I wouldn't try driving it that far in winter. Summer might be an adventure, winter is just dangerous. If you use a tow bar, leaving it running wouldn't matter to the brakes, you won't be using them anyway being towed. What happens if you tow it running and somehow you hit a bump or something and it slips into gear? Personally, I would rent a car trailer with two axles and electric brakes, tie the Caddy down on it, and using a large sized truck (3/4 to one ton) tow it home that way. Failing that, I would go get it out from where it is and rent a storage unit and store it inside until the weather and road conditions are more suitable to try to move it whether tow or drive.
  3. I would think if the roads are bare and the tow vehicle can handle the weight of the Caddy, then a "towing bar" should work out well. Rope? Definetly not. Not even for a short distance. You still have to figure out how to attach the tow bar to the car...those front bumpers aren't really good for tow bar attachment. Maybe have attachments welded temporarily to the frame? We here in Western Canada have similar winter conditions and, while summer is preferable for sure, a tow bar tow would be doable in the daytime hrs.
  4. Maybe Norm should do a series of New Yankee Workshops on automotive woodwork Maybe rebuild a Chevy, then a Chrysler T&C He's done furniture up the ying yang over 20 yrs, time for something very different!
  5. Ya, but if you lived in sunny Southern Alberta, you would have basked in +15 today...in January...nice:p
  6. That's why I asked. Most export models were built in Canada and had the 25 inch block. They are importing quite a few from the US as well, which would be the 23 inch block. Probably worthwhile to take a tape measure to it just to be sure;) Anyway, I may have a 25 inch exhaust manifold.
  7. Is it a 23 or 25 inch block??
  8. Remove the driveshaft and tow it that way. Then you aren't trurning the transmission and can tow it with your tow bar.
  9. That's OK Robert, it's been a nice break from the -25 crap. Gotta love those Chinooks...even though they say this isn't a true Chinook, just warm air from those nice folks in California (Got to BBQ yesterday and putter in the garage today with a cold one)
  10. That one will buff out nicely Looks like the door may be out of adjustment a bit;)
  11. My heart would have to already be stopped and there would need to be a few cases of whiskey involved for me to THAT
  12. We have it slightly different here and it shows up when it's 30+ below. Now, for sure there are a few jerks who drive by, but at that temp someone stranded could die in a short time. You will find multiple good samaritans stopping to help stranded motorists and people helping each other shovel sidewalks, etc As far as selling junk for an inflated price, just check the Calgary Kijiji site under "classic cars" and you'll see those in spades. Not sure if they sell or not but there's lots of them at astronomic prices. 4 door, six cyliner 3 on the tree 63 Chevy Biscayne for $18,000...yes $18 grand. 63 Chevy's are rare ya know!! One guy selling an '08 Mustang, not getting any bites at $40,000 threatens that this is the last weekend it's for sale until spring, after that the price will be $65,000. Brain-dead fool. Have to say though, in person, most people I meet are nice enough folks. This forum has some og the best people as well. Lots of help, advice and long distance free parts exchange. Cancels out the jerks
  13. That's cool...here's mine:
  14. Choke, or choke-hold??
  15. Rodney, they often say that isn't the way to handle things, but there comes a point where it's the ONLY way. I can only hope there is another person also recovering only longer. I used to OK with up to 3 to one if I was mad enough. To old for that now ;( , besides nowadays some of these cowards have to have firearms 'cause they have no cajone's. Get well soon!
  16. Two things: Check the emergency brake to ensure that it's not full of dirt or out of adjustment and dragging a bit. That drag would make upshifting impossible, even if it was just a bit of dirt. If that isn't it, take the governor off, take the cover off (4 screws)and give it a generous blast of carb cleaner, followed by a generous blast of brake cleaner to dry it out, then coat the weights with some white lithium grease or light 10 wt oil, reassemble and try that.
  17. I would think the source for combine parts would also have parts for your engine. One of the things you learn very quickly with an old car is that some people hear old car and instantly say that you can't get parts. Well, maybe the local big box parts store doesn't carry them but parts ARE available, you just have to know where to look. If you don't know where to look, you ask. You shortly become a very good detective, knowing who to ask what until you find the answer you're looking for. I have a 251 crank if that will help.
  18. Hope you're well soon, Rodney.
  19. "They" say that as you get older, you begin to lose the "edge" and slow down a bit. Maybe some older folks shouldn't drive or should be tested more often, pilots, especially, should be grounded as they get old. Hasn't THAT BS theory been blown all to he!! ?? Mr. Sullenberger III showed the world today that the impossible is possible, and some true heroes have silver hair. I am in awe of this man's feat today, but I bet he isn't. Amazing. Thanks, Sully.
  20. The chroming process changes the makeup of the metal, so the ability of the head bolt to hold it's torque would be altered, plus the chrome would add to it's dimensions, which would affect how it fit into the threads. That's why they are usually just capped. Google "chroming process weakens" for dozens of articles.
  21. Well, if Norm has to change his name to "Driveway" then I'll have to change mine to "In Garage on Jack Stands for 5 years":( I think his name should be "Really Good Sport" for the ribbing he so goodnaturedly takes from Don, and returns as well. Aren't they all cute at that age?
  22. After a long career as a professional driver of everything from 18 wheeler to a Handi-bus and everything in between and then as a crew/truck dispatcher/scaleman/loader at a large asphalt plant, I am now a caregiver for a 54 yr old Down's Syndrome man. Totally different from anything I've ever done, the lowest paid job I've had in 30 yrs, and by far and away the most rewarding. It's really something knowing that what I do now actually makes a difference I can see in someones life. To heck with the money, this is way better.
  23. Nothing! Sorry Niel, we had that crap last week and don't miss it:mad: Like all things though, it'll change.
  24. Forecast says some warm California air will take us into the 60's for a few days, 50 today. Just a week ago it was 25 below. So...we get the warm California air and the east gets our frigid air...seems like a good trade to ME!!!!!
  25. Here's some info from the Forward Look Forum: The kit: http://www.magnumforceracing.com/wilwood_earlychryslerkit.asp You might ask for a basic kit instead of one with all the goodies included...much cheaper that way. An installation thread: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=21931&posts=18&highlight=brakes&highlightmode=1#M146923 Also, AAJ has a decent kit for a 57 with the option of a basic or deluxe kit: http://www.aajbrakes.com/rproductinfo.html
