    See if there is some adjustment where the linkage attaches to the lever on the side of the tranny. If that lever is too far forward or backward, it will make for hard shifts. And, there will seem to be a lot of time between shifts.

    You've got a modern LA block small block Mopar. On the block above the starter is a casting number. In the first four digits is the engine size. Here's a way to identify the trans: http://www.carcraft.com/newlook/crc_act/116_0302_trans/ Any Jeep Cherokee from '87 on with the 4.0 liter/auto combo will have the 3:55 gear and 5 on 4.5" lug bolt pattern
