  1. I agree with Don. Go with the 265 since external measurements are abouth the same. My 265 had the bolt on full flow oil filter so I had to put on a shorter starter motor. Otherwise it was a drop in. Send us some photos as you move forward on your project.
  2. Sure like your yellow/black paint job. Spitfire head looks great! Your engine must have floating power like a butterfly and stings like a Super Bee!
  3. Thanks for posting photos of your project. What kind of wood is that for the bed?
  4. Here's a photo of the gear driven cam on my IND 265.
  5. Two choices brushed or polished. http://stoveboltengineco.com/index.php/catalog/?page_id=89#ecwid:category=361512&mode=product&product=1222025
  6. I have a gear driven cam on my 265 IND engine. We went with a gear driven cam that came out of a Chrysler Crown Marine engine. The Crown Marine cam has more lift than the stock cams while still retaining a smooth idle. We had to put in a different brass gear driven oil pump for correct rotation. The engine has a "different" whirling sound to it vs. the chain driven cam. Makes it a little different from the run-of the-mill flatheads. Gear driven cams were also used on heavy duty truck engines. Not at my home computer right now will send a photo later.
  7. Tom Langdon at: http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/ has aftermarket speed equipment for your 218 including custom dual exhaust manifolds, dual carbs and intake manifolds, 12 volt HEI ignition and air cleaner covers.
  8. I went with Quiet Ride and am completely satisfied. They do not use cardboard and actually had the original design stamped into the door panels that was not available in cardboard versions. The optional gray painted panels perfectly matched my gray dash and other painted interior parts. Several pieces of their kit for the 1937 Dodge MC 1/2 ton did not match my original cardboard pieces. I mailed them my originals and they reproduced my kit perfectly.
  9. Clean looking frame up resto. Engine looks great. Nice job. Keep sending us photo updates.
  10. I use 5w/30 in my rebuilt flathead.
  11. Got to talk with Jerry on Saturday at the car field. Sure drew a large crowd. Sorry we didn't get at chance to meet.
  12. Sorry, I did have the driveshaft balanced and added a large vibration damper off of a Dodge 265 2 1/2 ton truck engine.
  13. Nice looking engine.
  14. I didn't balance anything on my rebuild so far so good. Use the money for something else.
  15. The original 265 distributor had a vacuum advance on it. My Langdon 12 volt GM HEI also has a vacuum advance.
  16. I have an old Crown Marine brochure that lists a 265 CI with dual carbs. You would have to make sure that your get the correct engine rotation. You'd be able to use the basic block with cam pistions crank rods etc. I am running a CM cam in my 265. It had more lift than the stock cam but it was gear driven so I had to use a different distributor. The gear driven cam is neat in that the engine makes a different whirring sound. I also got the brass water distribution tube from one. I would have installed a marine 265 if I could have found one that had run on the Great Lakes. They were better constructed than auto blocks since most onf the water carrying parts including the water distribution tube were made of brass. If the block is in good condition and the price is fair grab it up. The brass air cleaners look cool on the engine too.
  17. I have a neat SW 0-4500 tachometer with the two adjustable redlines. I want to replace the old drive mechanism with a modern 12 volt unit that will run off of my GM HEI ignition. The tach looks great (like the one attached) and would be period correct with my flathead 6 engine. Has anyone done or know someone who has done a similar conversion? I need to know what modern tach was used as a donor to drop into the old housing retaining the original pointer and face and get instructions (possibly with photos on how to do it). I have searched a lot of sites and really not found any posts that are helpful. The prices to have this done by a professional restorer can reach up to $500 which is way out of my $$$ range. If I can't get the instructions and pointers, perhaps someone knows of a reliable company that is not quite so pricey.
  18. Nice job on the engine.
  19. Using a Tom Tom for corrected speed and mileage, I got about 17.5 mpg on a 100+ mile trip at speeds between 65 and 70 mph. (265 CI 25" block with factory dual carb and exhaust and 5 speed with 3:54 rear end and 16" tires). Need to replicate a few times to know for sure.
  20. Thanks for the photos of those two pages. I saw them once at at swap meet years ago but was unable to duplicate the pages.
  21. Having a great time at the Woodward Cruise. Saw a few Dodge trucks. Anyone else attending? http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=C4&Date=20100818&Category=NEWS13&ArtNo=8180801&Ref=PH&Profile=1001&Params=Itemnr=9 http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?template=zoom2&Site=C4&Date=20100818&Category=BLOG28&ArtNo=100817072&Ref=AR&Profile=1319
  22. Great tach and great sound. Anyone know how to modify an old mechanical tach to a modern 12 volt neg ground HEI unit by replacing the old guts with a modern sending unit while keeping the old face housing and pointer? I have called several places but the price is way to high for my budget. Would try it myself if someone would post photos and instructions on how they did their conversion.
  23. All depends on how much money you want to spend on your engine and how nice you want it to look (relative) and how much gain in performance you want to get. I got my 12 volt GM HEI, dual exhaust manifold, carbs , T5 transmission with adapter kit and dual intake manifold from Langdon's Stovebolt Engine Co. http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/acartpro/ I would order a special ground cam or Edgy aluminum head from Earl Edgerton. Vintage Power wagon is also a source for modified cams. I would also recommend intakes exhausts and rebuilt overdrives from: Asche George Jr (814) 354-2621 1693 Fertigs Rd, Venus, PA 16364-1823 I bought my engine rebuild parts from: Terrill Machine Route 2, Box 61 De Leon, Texas 76444 254-893-2610 There are other after market suppliers in the forum listings that you could also check out.
  24. Fernando, Great looking grill.
  25. Thanks for the photos, Joel.
