I have had the purple dot 5 synthethic brake fluid in my 1939 Desoto for over 23 years. I have not had any problems. I flushed the entire system with denatured alchohol. Keep the same jar or container hooked up to the system. The fbrake fluid will sperate and if i remember correctly the old will be on top. Keep flushing until you only have the same color fluid in the jar. Use a clear plastic container so you can see the different fluid colors. Keep extra dot 5 as a spare and make sure that if you ever take the car to a mechanic that you remind them that you use dot5 and also might put a sticky on the fire wall near the MC. Dear 42Dodgeguy, I looked onthe AACA forum and you had posted your question directly inthe Classic Car Section of the form. Yes you 33 Ply is not considered as part of the classic car club marques, This are the Big Buck cars v16 Cadallac, Pierce Arrow, Dusenberg, etc You should be post your question directly in the Plymouth and GMAC and Chevy sections since this would be more poited to the members that have these cars and can answer your direct question. Getting the question posted intot he correct car maker would help to get the question to the correct members. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

It does not matter what car you have so long as if is an antque. I personally know the President of the AACA a Mr Mike Jones and would like to bring this to his attention. This not how the AACA soul dbe treating memebrs and future members. They have an extensive library of information and someone on the AACA forum should be able to answer your question. I think the nicest 30's Desoto was the 33 Roaster witht he Chromed Miller from Grill. I have attached a picture. It has the short cropped chromed windshield. It looked like a hotrod back when they were produced. This model is the Custom because of the fancy headlight. I have seen several of these and they by far are a real classic looking car for the day when they were produced. Rich Hartung

Powerhouse, I noticed that you stated you had a headlight relay. I added one to my 39 Desoto just to get more juice to the lights. This unoit has two fuses inline for each circuit, one for low and one for high beam. Sometimes the unit sticks and the low beams willnot work and I have to tap on the unit and then the lows will come on. You might be having the same issue since the units are old and there might be a lose connection in the relay rich Hartung

The first thing to do is take real detailed pictures o fthe cars and document the issues. Then send then to your insurance carrier. I hope you have used a specilaity company like JC Taylor or another company and not your regular car Insuracne company. File the claim get apprials on the damage and get the cars fixed. Let the father know the cost of the damage. I would get the kid involved and all of the the other kids involved with some type of community work and have the community put a price on the work. Do not ket the kids go scott free. As someone else stated you might want to invite the kids over to see the damage and then explain how long it takes to restore a car and help turn a wrench to remove a fender or what ever needs to be fixed. They might turn out to be great kids. I know it willbe hard not to get mad at them but they are in need of some guidane from some one and you just might be the person. It sounds as if mom and dad never have time for them and possibly they never sit down at the table to talk just tooooo busy but this is why kids are getting into trouble. They is no generation gap jus a lack of talking with your kids and paying attnetion to them. They need us to talk to them and if we do not pay attentiont hen they go off and do stupid things. Just my thoughts. Take a deep breath they might be a real good friend later in life. Rich Hartung

If you have a 6v battery charger you can hook up the clips to the flange and then to each seperate contact on the prefocused bulb. If the bulb lights up then at least you know the bulbs are good or y0ou could have bad bulbs. Another thing is do you have the refelctor out of the metal frame when you are testing the bulbs, remember that the frame that holds the refector to the light bucket is what make the ground and if they are not grounded then they will not light up. I had theis happen to me and then when I assembled the reflector into the bucket then the lights worked. I have a 39 Desoto so I basically have the same setup that you have on the 39 Plymouth Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

This style of mirror was part of the belt trim moulding. You will notice that they screw directly into the car and do not clip onto the metal. The 40' Chryslers and Desoto used these as part of the belt moulding and you need this to complete the trim. They are not very well design to acutually see cars comeing up on either side. rich hartung

Oh Well I guess my name can now be added to the long list of unemployed. I was on a three day vacation last week and then came into work on Monday. The managers all came over talk and see how my vacation went. i start back on my software testing duties and then got a call to come to the from conference room at 10 AM. The sad part is that my direct manager was still driving back from florida because he could not get back home on the AMTRAK Autotrain. I was then told that the project that I was working on has been cut because of not meeting its goals and not making enough sales. So now I am looking for a position in the greater Philadelphia are as a Software tester. But for the next few days we will be digging out from over 2-3 foot of snow. Then off to hitting the monster pages and actively hoping to find a position at the age of 58. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

Is there any posibility that you might have some lubriplate or lithium grease on the linkage or on the pivot for the butterfly. Possibility that this might be causing the butterfly not to fully close when the temp is very low. ALso check for any burs i nthe linkage and moving parts. If setup properly then the unit should close off the butterfly Question are you using the correct sisson choke. The early years used the one with the lever on the right sdie and the later ones used the units with the lever on the left side. Just asking. If all else fails then I have a couple of these NOS chokes with the arm on the right. I could send you one and you can put this osnthe car and give it a try. The unit just might be worn in some place. Just athought. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.co

What I am questioning is that the older orginal sticker told the user that they could get 8 thousand miles on a filter and oil change. But we were told to chnage the oil every 3 thousand mile with conventional oil. Now we have syn blended oils and better filters and now we are told to change at 5k which is less than 8 k and we now have better filters and and also better oils. I do not understand. So who is correct or are we being sold a bill of BS by the oil and filter companies. Mobil 1 now has an oil that will go 15k before an oil change but you should chnage the filter at 7.5k. The have a stipulation that if the car is stillunder warranty that you should stick with the manufactures suggested plan and then when out of warranty you can go with their plan. Who is plulling our proverbial chain!!!!! Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

I find the wording on the decal very odd. When these type of filters were being used we did not have synthtic oils. Everyone was told to change the oil every 3k miles. Now the original decals told you that you could go 8K miles using the older straight oil back inthe 50's Now we are being told that with a synthetic blended oil we can go upto 5k on our cars and with full synthtic 7-10k miles. When we used the old style oils according to the Mopar engineers we could go longer on the regular oils then we can with the newer oils. An to make matters even more questionable is that the roads back in those days still had a lot of dirt roads, thus this is why they used the old style oil bath air filters to help capture the dust from getting into the carb and internal of the engine. This is open for points of discussion from the group. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
