  1. is the pontiac loosing atf or some other kind of fluid, coolant maybe? looks like there'sa little puddle under the front end...
  2. true! i have to do it on this weekend or next week, and it helped a lot to have it at least seen once before doing it. i have adjusted a lot of valves in my life, on running engines and static, but always on OHC or CIH or OHV engines where they're easily accessible and never on a flathead. i'm curious how it will run afterwards, i'm looking forward to it! thanks for filming, merle, and joe, thanks for posting your work so detailed. i will make the wrenches myself, too, since i don't think i'll get any here in germany. best, fred
  3. hey dezeldoc, your yard looks like the kind of place i'd like to snoop around a little... great place, lots of sleeping beauties:) what's that green fender in the background sticking to? sorry, back to topic:o
  4. this is unbelievable! i'm glad that one time i can read a thread about rear brake drums without all the violence, frustration and hate they normally contain:rolleyes: i've been down that road, so i know what it's worth, congratulations!
  5. isn't that a FIAT 500 in the background of the second pic?
  6. hey pete, i'm sad right now! just got up and turned the computer on and then i have to read this... when i sold my opel rekord that i had for 10 years and spent countless hours and funds in re4storing and modifying, i shed a tear, too. sometimes things have to be passed on. but hey, you'll see you can't get along without toys and i hope you'll be back here as soon as this darn checkbook allows it;) thanks for putting me here on this forum and thanks for all the great info you have shared here and on your website! all the best from berlin, fréderic
  7. the ice inside it and the air flow? edit: forget it... the other captain was faster
  8. thanks! and now: go build your car, you have to drive it:) what do you think, how many horses do you have now? do you have acces to a dynanometer?
  9. nice pair! you are a lucky man. enjoy it here! oh, and i thought "riffraff" was more like this: http://dudes55.com/Main/Gasser55/gasser55s_gasserdave2.jpg best, fred
  10. edwin, i saw them and you're right, they're really nice and a good alternative. for my car it's a bit more difficult, because they're not covered by a "lampshade" from the fender and stick right out, so you'll see the difference in any case. so i decided to take the smooth, paved road of illegality and just swapped back to my lil' old sealed beams:D "For work I'm too lazy, Investment's too slow Train robbin's too risky, It's gamblin' I'll go." one of my favorite songs, i try to stick to it... by the way, the last time i ordered coker tires, i weren't pleased at all by their running quality and grip, i don't know, i decided not to order them ever again. maybe they're part of the problem?
  11. hmm, when i talked to the guys at fatman (last year in summer) they said they wouldn't have anything suitable for these cars. maybe they didn't know it was the same part, i do not either. but it would be good news if they were identical. i'm using 16" original steelies, because i like the factory striping so much. so i have problems with wheel clearance while steering when i lower the front any more... i'm looking forward to the photos, i love vintage custom and speed parts:cool:
  12. ok, thanks, that makes sense to me now. you don't know how creative i am when it comes to swearing:D but i'll follow your advice anyway, many thanks for it! (as for swearing, we already discussed this some time ago in my thread about rear break drums and the meaning of "bfh"...tee-hee...) i'm a little confused since i found different data regarding tappet clearance in my thompson tune up manual than in the tech section... are they different on 201, 218 and 230 engines? most likely they are...? by the way, if anyone's interested, i've got the thompson manual for all models from 39 to 48 with me here. i can scan it and post it or email it to anyone interested;) best, fred
  13. why is it ridiculous to try normal wrenches? i have to adjust my valves, too, and it seems a good idea to ask you first before i walk right into the same trap... i must say i'm still a little afraid of the procedure...
  14. what car do you intend to use them on, a P10? (i guess from your profile...) i'd really like to see a picture of them! are there really fatman spindles for the P10? also, what size of wheels do you use?
  15. what exactly did you do to the engine? what is your guess in hp? it is a 23" block, right? been watching this video over and over again, the neighbors hate me already because of the sound and i should actually be working right now, but...
  16. thanks for the name of the color! i put it down here for future use, who knows... as for the color of the armrests, the fragment i found in my P-10 had the same color, since the rest of the interiour is tan i thought as well it would have been put in there randomly. funny thing if it should be original, maybe i should try restoring it...
  17. ed, that sounds like a good theory to me. (edwin, does it have one?) if so, is there something that could be done about it? a friend of mine has a similar problem with his power steering.
  18. awesome condition, great color! i love it! like it has been said here earlier, your grandpa would be mighty proud of you... what is the name of that color, do you know that?
  19. absolutely great! thanks for posting! the sound is amazing. i have to sell something, need speedparts... let's see... the bed? TV? couch? everything...?
  20. welcome here! that's a great de soto you're having! can't wait to see more pics...
  21. it's an IWL SR59 "Berlin" built in '59. Made in GDR... it has a 9,2cui two stroke engine, a 4speed and 8 angry horsepowers:D i just had to buy it because of the name! plus it's fun and a real head turner (it's extremely loud...) and it's perfect for short trips out in the country with my girl on the backseat.
  22. 2.1bar is ok for a radial on a car of that size, i think. air pressure is more critical on a bias ply, i've had the exact same problem on my car, lowered the pressure to 1.8/1.7 bar and now everything runs well. i'm guessing steering box, too. are all the joints and bushings in good condition? great car for festivals and short trips to the fishing pond! a little fire and a beer case and then roll up for the night in the rear of the car... great!
  23. nice photo! you may not know it, but you're ALL hanging out with scooter trash electronically:D meet my little everyday rude-scooter:
  24. james, i'm suspecting the vaccum advance isn't working like it should on my car. i went for a ride after posting here yesterday and really let the car have it, just to see how the engine would react. i came home running a little rough and making little fast paced puffing noises. idle speed was higher than before as well. i found an air leak, too. i sprayed brake cleaner on the intake and the carburator base and the car choked, so i guess i'll have to fix that first. now what i'm going to do is take the distributor out of the car and disassemble and clean it. i guess maybe the centrifugal advance doesn't go back all the way when dropping back to idle speed. the strobe light didn't show differences between vaccum/ no vaccum operation, so i guess the membrane might be gone. a valve job can't hurt either... afterwards i'll try going back to 6° and see what it does. does that sound like a good plan to you? 17gal equals 65 litres, that's more than i thought. the tank isn't caved in or anything, but i think the car's consumption is far avove normal. if i calculated this right i'm having 10miles per gallon. that's a little greedy for an asthmatic grey wale, don't you think? thanks for the tips, guys! i'm still having fun here:) greetings from berlin, frederic
