  1. you're right, james, but 15 or even 13 would be a dream. what we have here is more like 7 or 8, driven without load on a flat country road with 40-45mph cruise speed... we'll see what the ignition says.
  2. ... because i have the same issue once again. guess i will now disassemble everything once again to check this hole you told me about. i also guess when i hunted down this one i'll be able to disassemble and reassemble the brake system with eyes closed and hanging upside down:mad:
  3. i know this is OT but i noticed many of you here keep a chevy pickup in the barn for utility purpose now a friend of mine has a '49 with the same problem than my P10: horribly low gas mileage (downs over 30 litres per 100km... yikes!) mine's gotten a little better and i'm waiting for the pack of spares from andy b. right now. so i will work on his engine on sunday, check for air leaks and ingnition timing and the infamous broken vac advance. does anyone have another tip to share were to look closely on these stovebolts? they seem to be sturdy, painstaking engines to me, just like our flatties or the slant sixes.
  4. don, i'm really curious how everything will fit into your car and what you say in the end. please share some pics of your work, that would be great and very helpful! i must say, when i had my stock P10 setup adjusted correctly, i was really surprised about what this stock brakes could do, and so was everybody else. i never had the feeling of being unsafe or a menace to others. but! i realize now that this condition is never a long-lasting one, or at least it seems like it to me. i don't understand how a simple setup like the one on my 40 (being even more simple than the P15 system) can cause this much trouble. if you're satisfied with the ECI system, i'll maybe follow your steps and convert as well.
  5. pekka, thanks for your kind words! i just passed them on to him, they come to right time for he's kind of frustrated at the moment having serious heat issues with the dual carbs and fuel supply. he'll make it, i'm sure. best, fred
  6. joe, i'm sorry my finger-crossing didn't seem to have any effect... this is a mess, i'm really sorry to see this! now let's hope it can be fixed rather easily through honing or a slight overbore and you don't have to "put it on the shelf"...! thanks a lot for sharing the pictures, keep the faith! best, fred
  7. great dialogue, thanks for the morning laugh! it's always funny (afterwards) in what situations technical enthusiasm can get you with your partner. i remember the day my mom caught my dad in the kitchen using the oven to dry the heat resistant coating on his cylinder head... or when i was caught using the casserole and oven cleaner on my timing chain... sorry, btt ps. higher beings command: install dual exhaust... *hypnotic drone*
  8. hey rich, yes it was a great help, i printed the catalog sheets you sent me and ordered my stuff at andy b.'s. they were a little surprised that i could suddenly call again less then a day after the firts call and rattle down ALL the autolite numbers:D serves them right... i then went on into the garage, pulled the dizzy and disassembled it. then i checked with the catalog if all the new parts in there (installed by the dealer in kansas) were the correct ones, they all were. all the wires were new, as well. BUT, just a i thought, the central bearing was packed with dry grease and didn't allow the assembly to go all the way. cleaned it, put some light oil in it i normally use for the wheel bearings in my old bicycles (all of them have oilers) and tested it on the bench with a power drill on the distributor's shaft. everything's fine now. afterwards i doublechecked the vac advance diaphragm with a vac pump, it's hereby officially pronounced dead (funny thing to say because you could hear it breathing.... scary:eek:) put everything back in and now i wait for the mailman to be bring me some spares... thanks everyone!
  9. i'm planning to remove the dizzy from my engine after dinner today, i suspect the braker plate assembly to be crusted with old grease and i just ordered a big box of spares from andy b. containing my vac advance. i want to get everything ready for its arrival and a new tune up kit. my understanding is that i just mark the spot where the rotor is pointing, take out the clamp screw and pull the whole thing out of the engine. is that right, or do i have to be on the lookout for other things? fred
  10. don, i feel with you. i'm still having trouble with my master cyl, and it was bought new in february. let's hope you can deal with this the easy way...
  11. looks like the air ride reservoir to me...
  12. thank you, rich!
  13. bob, that's correct! he's in pittsburg, i think it was on north broadway. very nice man, only deals with 2doors of all kinds. i payed quite a lot for that car, i guess, but he was very patient, let it sit in his yard for nearly 3 months, purchased tires and battery, new spark plug wires, changed oil and filter and helped me with the shipping, and he didn't charge me a dime for it. i hope he's alright for he didn't answer my last email and that's just not like him... if you ever come by and have a chance to talk say hello from frederic and tell him the rusty girl has a new, exciting life over here:) sadly i do not know anything about the exact place the PO was living. all i know about the car is the things mr. loughmiller told me and what was on the papers i found in the car.
  14. sorry to hear that, joe. this is bitter... you're a smart man to test the engine that thoroughly when it is still easy to work on, many people would have said "hey, it's been rebuilt, everything is perfect!" and assemble the whole car before they hear that noise... after this, you'll be quite experienced with this engine, if that can be a comfort to you. let us know when you found the culprit! i keep my fingers crossed!
  15. rich, that would be fantastic! it is a 1940 Plymouth P-10 Deluxe 2door sedan, 201cui engine. i'll send you my email adress via pm. thanks a lot! fred
  16. i tried to read my distributor number on the little aluminium badge, but i cannot read it any more. what i have is *GS-4109-1 | ***2012* it also says "Chrysler Corp Solar Spark *something*" (* is an erased letter or number) andy b. say they can't help me on base of this information... only thing left to do would be disassembling the dizzy and send them a photo of the unit itself. can anyone here make anything out of this info? engine number is P10+276487A, but i'm not sure of the "A"... thanks a lot in advance! fred
  17. thanks, jim, that's a good read! as for the advice in the tech section, i read it once, but forgot already because of other more important things distracted me... i'll reapeat my lesson and then decide what to do, but rebuilding seems rather unnecessary to me because of the climate and terms of use.
  18. dear uncle, of course you're right on the spelling... wait till my buddy sees this, i'm in big trouble! glad you like it, i'm really proud of him. see the full lenght story here: http://stabil-berlin.de/pobeda/ greetings! fred
  19. that sounds plausible to me, captain. if only they could talk... what i find amazing is the distances that were travelled in these cars on a regular basis. i still have to calm down myself and learn to travel the autobahn with 50-55mph without listening to every little noise and constantly eyeing the gauges for a sudden pressure drop or temp rise... wait, is that noise new? was there a misfire? water pump failure? should i pull over? can i go faster? i wonder what my rpm are at the moment? and so on... i'll learn pretty soon, i guess. they were built for this.
  20. thanks for the info, bob! i wanted to contact the dealer i got the car from to ask a few more questions and see how he does, but sadly he doesn't answer any more. i hope he's fine... the race was an 1/8 mile, for some reason they mostly race that distance here. top speed was a stunning, breathtaking 46.6mph in incredible 14.6sec. reaction time was pretty good for the first time i guess, 0.3sec. i wanted to beat 40mph, so i'm happy with it. still slow as a stone... have to fix that.
  21. hey, i'm just jealous! ...don't even have a modified car. guess we're about the same age. i like your coupe, that's for sure!
  22. sure we are, the next morning someone with a rake appears and clears the ground for the next party... those locksmiths all say they can do everything, but i bet when i walk into the shop and put my ingintion lock on the counter, they all start running. we'll see, i'll keep you updated! the blanks have been shipped yesterday.
  23. you know, since pete blueskies is posting certain unreasonable videos here, i thought maybe i should do that exact thing:D seriously, i promise i'll be careful with the original motor. i'm saving money for bigger one right now, when it's time i'll post here that i'm looking for one. i just have to figure out which one. Die Startermädchen waren wirklich ganz niedlich, stimmt. Vielen Danke für eure Komplimente! Gebt mir noch ein oder zwei Jahre, dann sprecht ihr alle prima Deutsch! hihi...
  24. the spring is there, looks intakt. so is the counter weight. the housing is missing, and i have to take a closer look to how the mechansim is supposed to work. i admit that i haven't had enough time yet because of all the other problems piling up a little.
  25. i stand corrected... that engine is enormous, i'd love to hear one run. gotta visit youtube for the next half hour...
