If oil can soak into metal, it can also be flung out when that metal is rotating several thousand rpms...diesel is a good solvent that can soften any buildup but leaves behind a thin layer of hydrocarbon to displace moisture...diesel can also get into the lubrication system without causing damage.1 point

This forum has taught me not to panic until you have all the vital signs. A compression test is absolutely worthwhile. Even if you had a valve issue, it could be fixed without pulling the engine. Move methodically from compression test to the other tests mentioned - you may find something simple.1 point

Excellent! Good to have a garage built to accommodate a lift. Our garage was originally built to grow marijuana year 'round (well before our ownership, when it was still illegal in ME) so I've had to sidestep some minor design shortcomings, but the overall size outweighs those. It's well insulated, though - I can almost heat it with a match.1 point
