Captain Neon Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 I recently had my P15 tuned up. Upon taking receipt of the car, I was told that the harmonic balancer was "loose" and that I should find a new one. Couldn't the old one just be tightened up again? I would assume that a new one is readily available from VPW, but I feel like some one is trying to sell me a new reservoir for my blinker fluid. How serious is a "loose" harmonic balancer and how pressing is it that I have it replaced? Quote
greg g Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 The harmonic balancer is a three piece unit the inner and outer pieces of metal are bonded together by rubber. So if the ruber is loosing its grip you could have a loose balancer. There is an outfit that rebonds them search balance doctor or something like that. Quote
james curl Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 Damper Doc and he is on the wesr cost. Google him. Quote
Captain Neon Posted August 5, 2008 Author Report Posted August 5, 2008 No luck in finding a new harmonic balancer, and that really surprised me. For how long Mother MoPar made the L6, I thought they would be easy to find. No luck in locating the Damper Doc, either. If it makes a difference, my engine came out of a 1956 Dodge Coronet. Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 A quick google for "damper doctor" came up with this. http://members.aol.com/damperdoc/ Quote
Lou Earle Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Actually , I think , in fact I know, Plymouth did away with then in 1952 or 53. I just removed a crank pulley Assembly from a 48 Plymouth - at least engine was in a 48- no vibration dapner same for 53 engine I just removed crank pulley from and just again today removed crank pulley from 52 with unknown motor- id d number ground off- don't know why - none of these 3 engines had a balancer. If I were u I would just remove the pulley assembly and replace with another non balancer equipped one. Do you Have wide or narrow belt? I probably have a wide one. Lou Quote
steveplym Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 My '47 had a harmonic balancer on it originally. When I swapped engines back to the original I damaged it and the one on my other engine did not have a balancer. Only had the pulley. Both motors were 218's. No problems yet. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Chrysler I think done away with the two piece sometime in the early 50's...Louman has found that a good number of his later models as just a one piece design.. Quote
garbagestate 44 Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 I don't know how true it is but supposedly as the rubber ages, it shrinks and makes it difficult at best to time it accurately with a light as the part with the marks shift relative to the hub. Quote
