55 Fargo Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Hi all, af riend of mine was just quoted a rebuild price of $3800.00 for his 251 Flattie, this includes new pistons, bearings, cam, guides and valves all machining ,the works. I figure this is kinda high, I believe I was quoted around $2500.00 the last time I enquired about having one of my flatties rebuilt. The engine parts are form the US, and the tune of $1900.00. My current engine in my car has miles, but the compression when last checked, was good average 100, the oil pressure is strong 40 to 55 psi, she doesn't burn oil, but leaks oil like crazy. I think I will not be looking at a rebuild for a while on mine. Being that my engine is not rebuilt, should I go a lot easier on her than if she were rebuilt, what I mean is highway cruising speeds and rpm, should I keep her below 60 mph and 2800 rpm..............Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Not necessarily comparing apples to apples here but my 218 23" block cost just over 1500 for its rebuild. Cam and valves were reused though. Quote
greg g Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 I paid about 700 for parts no crank or cam, about 600 for machine work, .030 bore, .010 off the deck,.040 of the head, boil out, Oil pump check, true flywheel and flip ring gear, assembled to short block. I finished assembly at home, Oil pickup and pan, flywheel, clutch bellhousing, head, manifolds and accessories. I also did all the strip down at home and delivered the short block to the machine shop. this being 4 years ago. I think you can save some money by shopping parts. I got some from VPW, some from Terrell machine and some from Egge. prices were quite varied betwwn them so I cherry picked. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 I paid about 1900 but I had to have one cyclinder resleeve. Oh yes that was about 10 years ago also. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 I just did a Studebaker 289, block and crank good. all the internal parts were replaced. The cost......3100 machine work, 1900 parts. I had alot of high performance stuff done to heads and ordered alot of performance parts to make the engine last along time. Forged pistons, aluminum timing gears, stainles steel valves intake and exhast. On a 217 it should be half that unless your for ungrades like what Professor Coatney does, I just located a champ6 169.9 and the guy is a friend. I am goint to send it to Conn. so Mr. Cathcart can build a monster 6 with dual carb, split manifolds and high performance cam. I can't wait my motor like yourd Rockwood is the original and while the oil pressure is good I know it will not last long. Quote
