Ed,

I have seen them on 1948 Chrysler's just like that one.

I have also owned 2 and still own one for some 13 years total

and drove them as everydays and have never had stones

get thrown against that part of the front fender.

That is pure cool eye candy - nothing else.

Its still is pretty nice looking, but serves no real function.

Another reason it caught my eye was the crease's or lines it has like the rear stone gaurds have as if you could get them as a set or something. I've noticed some here with the rear stone gaurds have either a smooth type or the type with the crease's in it. I would suspect these would be more universal for fitting the front of various cars than those for the rear but I've never run across any for sale or seen any until this picture. They match the set of rear gaurds I've had for a few years now.

Interesting that you've seen them on other Chryslers Tom. Makes one wonder if Chrysler liked to use them since they had a lot of eye candy attached already. As for functional it wasn't even a concern to me either way. Like you said "eye candy".

I am going to pass this on to a buddy who's restored these probably more than any other makes and see how many he's seen. I've never seen any he's had in his shop but he's had much more there than I've seen. Plus most have been woodies and I dont think you would want those on a woodie. Thanks for the replies guys. This was more out of curiousity than anything but I enjoy seeing all the add-ons these companies came up with at the time. Ed

That's always possible Bob. Asked my buddy about them after sending him a pic and he said they were also on the Chrysler that he turned into the Zippo car. Said he had a set, prob the same ones from the car, but they needed rechromed. I thought they would have been stainless like the rear fender guards. May have to pay him a visit :D

Hey there, Ed,

Nice Chrysler !

I have a '48 NYer, and had a '47 Windsor... and have seen several-dozen others in my little life... have NEVER seen one with a gravel-shield on front or rear fenders.

The ones in your pic almost look like '49 De Soto ?

I'd bet these are aftermarket...

My 1950 Chrysler NewYorker Hdtp. has a die cast piece up on the front fender at the rear of the front wheel. Not the same as in the picture in this thread though. I'm kinda really into the C38/9 1946-8 chryslers- have been for over 30 years and have never seen a factory chrome shield on the front fenders. It's possibly a 1950 Cadillac?

I really appreciate everyone's input on this. Apparently these were aftermarket items and used on various cars and years. I'm guessing that because they are flat they would work universally.

I did ask my friend who has been working on these for a long time if he had seen them and he told me that he had the set that was on the Chrysler that he made the Zippo car out of. On my next trip over there I'll take some pictures of them, maybe even come home with them, we'll see. Thanks again guys , just a curiosity but interesting to learn, Ed
