Uncle-Pekka Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 I was kind of waiting, when this type of OT thread will pop up at the Mopar forum as well (as it has been going on the most car hobby forums all over...) Well, nothing bad in chatting little OT, preferrences on music tell more of us and may unite the group even more. As far as I read the replies so far, my tastes go best along with those of Rodney B. and Don C. As a general rule I like blues and soul and modern stuff based on these roots. Lately I've been listening a lot Dr. John of New Orleans, Neville Brothers, old Otis Redding, Blues Brothers band, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse. I've got almost all of Tom Waits', Pink Floyd's, Morrisey & the Smiths, the Band, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, CCR, the Who... A lot remains not listed. Of the "modern" hard rock I like Nirvana, the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age. There are some great finnish blues & rock'n'roll as well, but a list would be in vain... A band from my home town has recently made a record and a movie with some of old masters like Louisiana Red, Eric Bibb, Omar Dykes, Mick Taylor, Eddie Kirkfield & Barrence Whitfield. The name of the band is Wentus Blues Band. Look at their web site; http://www.wentusbluesband.com Quote
Young Ed Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 I like most of the rock oldies mentioned above(sorry guys but they are oldies : ) I also like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Soul Asylum to name a few. Quote
eric wissing Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 I like most of the rock oldies mentioned above(sorry guys but they are oldies : ) I also like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Soul Asylum to name a few. Ed there is a Scottish band that plays Rock or something but on the traditional instruments, Red Hot Chilli Pipers!!. What is a good ecletic CD is the Juno sound track. I love the Carpenter's song "Super Star" by Sonic Youth!! What ever excites you is good music. You should "feel better than James Brown" was not was. Eric Quote
Young Ed Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 I like that. Might be fun to hear. I've been watching for a cheap copy of the Juno soundtrack. Can't bring myself to pay 13.99 for it but I will find it used and pick it up. I have 100s of cds and frequent a used store music store here called Cheapo Records Quote
Captain Neon Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 I used to be a HUGE Guns N' Roses fan in college. In fact, my first year at the University of Minnesota, the guys on my floor called me GNR. I still love it when I hear it, but I sold all of that stuff to a used CD shop back in 2002 when I moved from Arkansas to Minnesota. This winter, it was Great White all the time while I waxed cars in the garage. It kind of reminded me of the days when I had plenty of time and only enough money to buy a few bottles of wax. If I did my dad's car first, he'd let me use what was left in the bottle he bought to wax my own car. Usually enough chemical in one bottle of Meguiar's to do two cars. Right now, I've been listening to a lot of Dream Theater at work, when I'm actually able to take some time while I work. I usually listen to "hot new country" when I drive a modern vehicle with a working radio. You'd be surprised how many of us old '80s metal-heads listen to modern country now. Brooks & Dunn, Tim McGraw and his hot wife Faith Hill , Brad Paisley, and Phil Vassar usu. get the volume turned up a notch or two. It goes back down a few notches when the talking idiots and commercials come on. While I have a modern 12v radio stashed in my P15, usu. I just listen to the music of my rebuilt tranny and the hum of the L6. Practiced my Spanish today. I used to buy lots of music, but not so much any more. If I'm buying music, it is usually Celtic (Gaelic Storm). I get tired of music when traveling and often do the books on CD thing or catch up on some archived talk radio that I like, The American View. I may order a few copies of the most recent You Can Run But You Cannot Hide shows before we visit the folks in Minnesota next month. I absolutely loved being a guest on their show back in 2006. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 If you get near the twin cities and want to chat cars let me know Quote
Allan Faust Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 Well, Me I'm a rock fan... basically older 70's to 80's hard rock... not the thrash, trash, death metal stuff of today, I like Kiss, Whitesnake, ZZ-Top, ACDC, as well as a lot of classic rock, CCR, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Nazereth, and I'm also a fan of the 50's and 60's stuff.... I'm in the process of downloading all my "cassettes" and "albums" as I find them to have the music for my Ipod... since I've got a couple hundred albums, a couple hundred cassettes and lots of CD's, well, I've got a lot to do with em..... Allan Quote
marklaken Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 I like both kinds - country AND western... The Detroit Cobras are a good lesser known band that really bridge generational borders - I think their recent "baby" album ('06?) is on par with anything that came out of the early/mid-sixties...checkout the NPR review on the band's website Quote
captden29 Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 I Love Talk Radio, But For Music I Like Classic Rock. Trouble Is The Stations That Play It Play The Same 100 Songs Over And Over. Still Good Though. I Can Deal With Npr. It Was Great To Hear Tim Mention Dr Hook. I Have An Old Album Of Theirs That I Play Alot.sylvias Mother.. Dennis Quote
David Maxwell Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 ...I just heard that Bo Diddley passed away. Another of my many eclectic favorites on my Ipod. I'm gonna go play his tunes right now. Quote
Captain Neon Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 I know a lot of people listen to talk radio all the time' date=' and agree with the right DJ it can be interesting. However, I lived and worked in Chicago for about 3 years in the late 60's. Was on the road all the time back then and would always listen to WGN talk radio in the mornings. That is when I was working in the city proper. If on the highway, that talk radio would put me in a daze, so stopped listing to it. So.........I really can't see how someone can listen to talk radio on the road, and especially someone reading a book to me. I'd be out like a light in no time.[/quote']Most of my books on tape are more like old radio dramas from the '30s and '40s with different actors doing dialogue for different characters (or a talented speaker doing multiple voices) and sound effects and music. I guess it just depends on which books on tape one is listening to. I have listened to some books on CD that I ended up choosing to interact with by sarcasm and one-liners. Things have come a long way since the boring books for the blind on vinyl of the '30s. I like long road trips. After hearing the same songs on the radio multiple times after a few hours, though, it's time for something different and books on tape/CD work well for me. When all I had was an AM radio in a 1978 Pinto, talk radio was about all I had, and there were times that it was so bad that I just had to turn off the radio, esp. once I left the Minneapolis/St. Paul metroplex. An hour of the local calendar of events, obituaries, and birth notices mixed w/ commentary about the local prep sports was too much for me to handle. Quote
james curl Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Before I retired I traveled the entire State of Texas, Monday thou Friday on the road looking at construction on Airport Projects for the FAA and the TexDOT. I have about 100 cassettes and 50/75 CDs of 50s rock and roll and country that I played through the car radio cassette player and an adapter for my CD player. If you have traveled much in Texas about all you can get on the road is Talk shows and Spanish radio so you need to take your own music. As I type this I am listening to Bo Diddley on cassette. Quote
David Maxwell Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 ...the last couple of days. I just now discovered what great music it is to workout to. It pumps you up!! Suddensix Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Time to put in my 2 cents worth. Jazz, Jazz, Jazz, from traditional like Billie Holiday, Jimmie Rushing etc to the swing bands, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Miller and the Dorsey Brothers into Dave Brubek, Paul Desmond, Dizzy and Cannonball. Local favourite Jeff Healey and the Jazz Wizards. Unfortunately Jeff Healey recently passed away. My favourite CD when driving one of my oldies late at night with the windows down and the sound turned up is the Eagles and Hotel California. Quote
David Maxwell Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 ...every one of you guys. Some sweet tunes you've all listed!! Quote

Ed Griffin Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 There was a time when you wouldnt catch me dead listening to anything but R&Roll. Now I like variety. Just abt every type other than rap or head banger. Two types I seem to come back to are blues (esp. old blues) and bluegrass. I was very suprised to see some also like Celtic. Played the Nat King Cole cd so many times I need another one with new songs. Big band is a must while cruising. Quote
james curl Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 I have a blues album by Keb Mo which I really like. He is a younger singer but sings old time blues. He has about seven albums out, which have a lot of good songs on them. They make good open road type music. Quote
50PlymouthSled Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 I'll stick too good ol' Rockabilly and Swing. :] Which is usually what's comin' out of my speakers regardless of where I am. But my musical tastes are very much more vast and varied. and include "Heavy Metal" nonsense most of you don't care for. Hah. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Old rock-n-roll of the 50s and 60s (I played for 23 years in a band doing that material).......and blues (I play the harmonica some). By the way Norm, I did not play with Bill Monroe. Have heard his work though. I enjoy some of the older country, and a small selection of the newer country tunes. Lately, I've come to appreciate some of the 70s and 80s classic rock songs that I basically ignored in their heyday. Some of those tunes are pretty darn complex and neat when you start paying attention. Like many others -- don't care much for the "new" music. Some of those songs don't have many words, but they sure sing the lines over and over and over. Also.....Ix-nay on the ap-ray. By the way.....I've discovered there's quite a lot of music to be found on You Tube. Just bring up the site and put in either an artist or type of music. Oh yeah......and just a little zydeco is fun as well. Aiiii--eee. Quote
wayfarer Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Wow, someone else actually listens to Tom Waits ?? How about Sandy Denny or Fred Neil?? Oh, dodgepu1946, I think perhaps you mean 'elusive butterfly'..... Quote
Young Ed Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Ya Don Coatney never answered me if that was the right name so I looked it up. I was close! Not bad for a 28yo. Quote
