JIPJOBXX Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 I was wondering with all the people here if that a few here still have some of there original upholstery? Mine is still in place with the original seat covered in my deal of a life, five dollar seat covers. Well the main thing here is I wanted to state is that my old car after sitting closed for a week or so still has that wonderful old musty smell that I remember when I went out in my fathers car years ago. It a wonderful old smell and I would imagine alot of younger people here would only recognize it by saying boy got to get rid of that smell. Its a great feeling to just get into a car that 60 years old and still have that sence of years gong by when were young and out for adventure in an old parents car. Remember those days when there were no seat belts, only AM radio's and maybe if your parents had an expensive car a fold down divider in the front seat or back? Well anyway does anyone here still have a little bit of that old musty smell of yesteryear's cars? Jon:D Quote
Reg Evans Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 I know what ya mean Jon. My 35 Dodge still has it's original interior and the odor reminds me of my parents 46 Ford sedan when I was a little kid. Ouch though...I remember taking naps on the back floor of that car on long trips and waking up with a sore cheek from the hogs hair carpeting. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 I gutted all my old interior out of the car. However, the seats are still the original seats. They were in great shape. I took them out and dropped them off at a detail shop. There they were cleaned with a disinfectant cleaner and deodorizer. Then I covered them with new pleated leatherette seat covers. All the other interior was replaced. Got rid of all the old odors. Now when the car sits for awhile all you smell is the new material. I remember those musty smells and never did care for them. The guy at the detail shop said he used up about a gallon of disinfectant and deodorizer to clean them. The cleaner used was a 10:1 mix. 10 parts water to 1 part cleaner/disinfectant/deodorizer. Took about two weeks sitting in the warehouse to get them completely dry. So, they were soaked through and through. They also looked like new after that, but wanted the custom interior so covered them anyway. Quote
David Maxwell Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 ...back in the `70s. First thing I noticed when I opened the door of my current P15, which I obtained through a trade around seven years ago, was the exact same musty oily smell you're talking about. All the memories came flooding over me at once. They say smell is the strongest sense tied to memory and I believe it! Quote
p24-1953 Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 im in the process of redoing my interior and i know that smell will be the one thing i miss. do you think they sell old car smell air freshners. i get in and it smells the exact same as the day i got it 15 years ago. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 have only seen the NEW CAR air freshner... Quote
David Maxwell Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 ...the wool broadcloth that was used. My car was completely gutted, sealed with POR15 inside and insulated. Then I had all new wool broadcloth installed. While lacking the distinctive oil and mildew, that part of the "old car smell" that comes from having wool fabric is quite noticeable and keeps the nostalgia alive. Quote

I can let you have my grandma for a week! or just enjoy the new car smell. Eventually the old car smell will come back... Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 Well, I had to get rid of the musty smell in my coupe. A little too much of that smell and I'll start getting sneeze attacks that can last up to 10 or 15 minutes at a time. Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 I can let you have my grandma for a week! What do grandmas smell like? Quote

However Don, remember you are married to one. Better not let the wife see this or you'll be sleeping in the dogs house/bed. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 29, 2008 Author Report Posted May 29, 2008 Talking about the dog house or a house in general. The original owner of my 42 was an old farmer that had three daughters and the guy who I bought the car from told me that he stated that all of his grand kids were probably conceived in the big back seat of that big old Dodge. Yep and by the size of that area back there it wouldn't be to hard to do. Old Jon Quote
