Picked up my wheels last night, and couldn't be happier with the result.

My original wheels were rusting on the inside, and the rust scale was bad enough to possibly cause a flat rubbing on the tubes in the tires.

I dropped all five of my wheels and tires off at my local Les Schwab tire store a week ago. They dismounted the tires and sent the wheels to the powder coat place. There, they were sand blasted, powder coated gloss black, and sent back. Schwab remounted the tires, balanced them, and they were ready to go.

$22 bucks each, including shipping to and from the powder coat place out of town. I was looking at new steel wheels from Wheel Vintiques, and they were about $75 each with the same powder coat ($35 each just for the powdercoat), so I feel like I got a deal and my wheels are like new.

Looks good Pete;

However it is a scientifically proven fact that chrome wheels go faster than powder coated wheels.

Yes, true... But, it is also a scientifically proven fact that finned aluminum heads are a vastly superior engine modification over cast iron heads that have marketing ploy scrip, so the lack of chrome on my wheels will be of little consequence in THE BIG RACE TWO...

Isn't $22 for powdercoating really cheap?

Can you tell me what brand the tires are? I'm shopping for a set of radials that have a decent sized white wall. I don't want to spend big bucks for the repo wide whites.

I bought the tires from the same les schwab tire store that did the powder coating. They are "Broadway Classic". Never heard of them, but they were the only tire they had with a bigger than ususal white wall. I bought them the day I left for Tulsa last year, and didn't have time to order anything else. Not what I wanted to put on the car, but they will do for now. I plan to buy a set of larger wide white radials in a year or two.

I think the car looks much better with the bigger whites...

Here's what it looked like with the Coker Classic bias plys-

And a few hours later, with the radials-

The skinny whites are a bit ho-hum and dinky in comparison, to me. And, the radials are a bit shorter, probably an inch, than the old tires. But the difference is the handling is night and day. I loved the look of the bias ply tires, but won't go back...

By the way, I still have the five bias ply wide whites (4 have 10k, one is new), if anyone wants to pay the shipping from 83333 they are yours for a $40 contribution to this forum. They are 27 inches in diameter, and weigh about 24 lbs each. I checking into shipping them for Ed Juneau, but it was rather expensive to get them to him...

I'd love to get the radial wide whites but I think the price they want is criminal. I have the wide white bias tires now and really want to try out a set of radials.

Pete the car looks good with either tire. I remember before you got it painted and I was thinking BROWN???? I actually had the skinny white wall mounted on the inside on my coupe because I decided big white wall or no white wall! The price of my 4 radials with the skinny white wall was about the same as 1 wide white radial. Crazyness

Boy, I'll say it's cheap! When I did the 6.5" x 16" wheels on my RV it cost me $60 per wheel, and I delivered them and picked them up!

And, the $22 included the sandblasting... :D

That is dirt cheap. I think I paid about what Marty paid and I live out in the sticks. They look real nice !

Interesting video. There used to be someone here in Nfld. who had one of those whitewall cutting machines a long time ago, time to do some detective work and see if I can find it. That is the first time I have seen the grinding wheel with a hole in it. I think it was on the HAMB. that I found the link to the tire paint.

Pete, I like the wheels and the tire video. I sent the video's URL to my pa. I've been considering powder coating my own wheels, esp. since I am running the stock dog dish hub caps on my P15.

As far as the white wall paint, it looks like something my shifty great uncle, Ralph, would have used at his used car lot.

I'm so looking forward to this weekend. ;)
