Tim,

That looks like professional quality work. Is that 18 gauge sheet metal? Also, what are you doing your cutting with? That's a really hard area to replicate. I have a bunch of those little clamps myself. Don't know what I'd do without them. When you finish the surface, are you going to use polyester putty? I have had good luck with that.

Tim,

Please do not get a swelled head from all the praise. Remember you said you would like to tackle my rocker panels when you started to do good work. Well I think the time has come as this last job looks like a keeper.

When you fly into Portland I will be glad to pick you up. I think it would be kind of crude if I let you ride the light rail into town. See you soon.

Oh I almost forgot, you were right I still have not bought a welder so you will need to bring yours. To save you from bringing to much stuff I can buy a role of wire, of course bring your gas.

Aslo let me know what days you are going to be here and I can help you reserve a room at the The Embassy Suites Hotel (You do not need to thank me for this room idea, nothing to good for a forum buddy). I will just need your card number for the room.

See you soon.

Thanks Your Forum Buddy,

Ed.

Tim,

I use a DeWalt angle grinder with the thinnest wheel I can find. It works very nicely. I know what you mean by finishing the cut with the flat of the wheel. It's a good technique. I use Evercoat too. Works really well. I like the way your welds look. Mine come out looking OK but I think it takes more work to get there than it should. I do a LOT of grinding. Seems like I haven't mastered the MIG to the point where I can lay a nice flat bead every time. I'd like to try the technique you're using just to see what it's like.

I went dumpster diving when I started my project and got a big section of a van that had wrecked. It was pretty heavy gauge sheet metal. I've used it on most of my repairs.

I figure it takes me three or four screwups to get a job done right.

Joe I've got the entire roof of a p15 2dr sedan planned for my floor in the 51 :)

If the metal's in good shape, it's perfect. Of course, you have to grind or blast it clean before you weld. But I think what you have is 18 gauge. You can get small pieces at places like Lowe's and Home Depot in a pinch. They carry one by two foot sections in various gauges but I found 18 gauge difficult to come across. The best thing is what you're doing and cannibalize.

I forgot to mention that I had my floor pans fabricated by Gil Knudsen of Precision Auto Parts in Des Moines, IA. I sent him pictures of my existing floor and he sent two big pieces, one for either side of the hump. The price was reasonable, as I recall and he does a good job. I think other guys on the forum have used him too. I think I heard somewhere that he's no longer in business but I can't really remember if it was him or not. If you can find him and he's still working, he's a good source.

Post some pictures of your floor when you get a chance so we can see what you're up against.

I haven't pulled the seats and carpet out to get a good look but with the seat sunk like it is the rockers that are virtually gone and the fist sized holes in the 1/4 next to the trunk I cant imagine its too good :) If you pull on the door without opening it the whole 1/4 wiggles. Certainly not going for any kind of a show car with this one but would like to put it back to solid enough to drive safely condition. Oh besides the roof of that other car I have a very solid trunk floor and back 1/2 from a parts car.
