steveplym Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I assume this is the one you are talking about? oldmopar Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 The only strange thing I see is you have to be approved to bid so maybe that is where the scam is. Quote
homebrewer Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I saw this also, and scam was the 1st thing that came to my mind. Almost every scam car I have seen on the bay has had the license plate whited out and the buy it now price has always been under 10,000. My theory on this is if the price is over 10 the penalty if you get caught is much higher. Kinda like petty theft compared to grand theft. Plus this guy has no history selling anything. He bought one thing from a seller who is no longer an E Bay member. I would be exceptionally leery of this deal. Caveat Emptor. George Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Last week there was a similar auction for a beautifull restored 35 Dodge Sedan. Buy it now for $5900. A few hours after I had asked some questions of the seller the auction had been removed from ebay. A day later I got this response from the seller. I'm really sorry for this late reply but I've been very busy lately and away from a computer. The car is located in Longmont CO. It has all the papers(complete). This was my father's car who passed away 4 months ago, it only brings me bad memories. I want this transaction to be smooth as I am caught in the middle of some very important events and I don't have much time at my disposal. The car is in perfect condition, no scratches, no special marks, no need for additional repairs what so ever, no leaks, rust free. A great car ready to be yours. It has a clear title. The price is $5,900 including shipping costs anywhere in the continental US. I require a deposit for $2,950 before the car is delivered. There are no other costs regarding this transaction. Regarding payment I am aware of the eBay's rules and we will use Vehicle Purchase Protection Program which will hold the payment until you receive the car. If you are interested please provide me the following informations necessary to take a decision: -your full name -your eBay ID -any negative feedback and if so .... for what reason . If I receive the requested information you will be informed by eBay during the next hours with details about your purchase. Thank you, Frank Osgood. Does this stink like a scam or what? Quote
greg g Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 This might be the scam deal that was discussd a week or so ago. This entails some one chatting up the seller of a car listed for sale on another source. then taking lots of pictures, and listing is on ebay. Basically all they have is the pictures. But if you bit and send them a money order deposit one a buy it know, you're are likely Up the Creek. I am suprised that they haven't gone the best offer route and then get to accept deposits from multiple buyers off ebay. Obviously that car is underpriced as a driving good looking convertable. If you want one, make the same buy it now offer to Bob T on his vert and see what his reaction might be. Quote
claybill Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 whoa!!! i sent him a question..no reply so far. but as the car sits.......how do oyu like that color?!...i think it is perfect for that design of a car.....also red or ivory. also strange that i see no listed ebay number. .... that i can find...? and no bids so far. bill Quote
oldmopar Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 ebay # 220196564463 I see 1 bid Quote
Ed Griffin Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Item number: 220196564463 Numbers on the right side of the blue header across from the yr, type car. If it didnt have a number I'd be scared that we all had clicked on a false link with who knows what in it's site. Pre-approval, if not legit, is for those second, 3rd, 4th.....offers for the seller to send after auction ends once he states that the winning bidder, his buddy, has backed out. Hard to trust a seller who has been on Ebay for two years and only purchased one thing not long after they became a member. With ebays new security setup you cant check the bidders feedback at all which hurts a potential buyer to do their own security research to see if this bidder is shimming the deal, lives in NM also, etc... . Too bad no one could ask to bid then ask to see the car in person if approved and they were close by. I'm sure the seller would begin to crawfish out if not legit. In ebays greed to prevent side deals they have basically shut down any security for the bidder to do their own research. Notice there's no vin # as well. Bet you cant get one either even though it lists a clear title. " Dear sir, I need the vin # so I can check the history..... ." Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I see nothing other than a scam:mad: Quote
steveplym Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I agree. Looks like a scam to me. The photos are out of focus too, which leads me to believe they might have taken them from another site. As they always say, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Quote
steveplym Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Checked again and the ad has been removed from ebay. Said it had been moved or removed completely. I searched by the item# and 1947 Plymouth like I did this morning to pull it up and nothing now. Quote
Don Jordan Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 Just for what it's worth - I was on the bay, a guy had what seemed like a very clean 47 2 door sedan. The story was his father owned it and died and he just wanted to get rid of it. It seemed a little too good to be true but I contacted him. Got a couple of friends and made a road trip to Phoenix. The car was as advertised and I paid him when I picked up the car. His father was in the process of restoring it so it was in pretty good shape. The son had no desire to keep it and just wanted to off load it. Sometimes they can be true. Quote
dezeldoc Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 The dead give away it is a scam is the free shipping to wherever! Nobody in their right mind would pay shipping on a low end car. Quote
