Thanks to the picture on the heater post, I have just found out that my confort master is a heater too! when I have the defrost on it only shoots out cool air, how do you adjust the temp. and how do you make it shoot out hot air? Any info would be appreciated!

Now Wesley, go and look on your engine to the back right side, there will be a valve in the head, in the cast it will read heater right on the head. There will be a heater hose running from that to one side of the heater core, the other outlet on the heater core will go to the water pump.

You will need to open the valve to allow the hot coolant to flow through the heater core. If you have a working heater control valve that is operated by a control knob in the car you will have to pull it to open the valve, if you have only the type of valve that has to be turned right on the top of the head where it screws into the engine, turn that valve until the hot coolant flows through the heater hose.

I just looked at your engine from the pic in Hemmings, I think your heater is plumbed into the cooling system.................Fred

There are a couple different valves but they are all located on the rear passenger side of the head. If it has not been operated in a while it might be frozen or clogged with debris. If it won't operate with a bit of effort, It is probably a good idea to remove it, and give it a soak in vinegar or dilute phosphoric acid.

I would give it a good soaking with a good penetrating oil before trying to open it or remove it.

Easiest test to see if its opened is the hoses will get hot.

Here is a twist to open type.

Nothing personal but in your other post you said you were not new to the Dodge that you have had it 4 years and been in the family 53 and just now discovering it had a heater...something is terribily amiss here...did you just inherit the vehicle?

Take a look at my newly posted topics on the main page and you will get the whole story! (Don't want to type it out again, it is to long! (Lol!)) Also, there is no heater control, just controls for the fan, on my 1948 Lincoln there is a special heater control! And I have had to figure out everything myself, I have had no one telling me anything until now, it has all been by trial and error and good 'ol guessing!

Wes....not only should you have a water shutoff valve of some style,

are the two heater hoses in place coming from the engine to the

heater??

Like greg said, there are a couple styles of shutoff valves.

This one is manual.....just turn it one way to open, the opposite way to

close and shut off the water. Just like a faucet.

The first one posted is operated by a cable on the dash.

On the bottom part of the dash, where knobs are located, there should be a heater fan switch and probably a "defroster" knob.

The defroster one changes it between blowing air to the windshield or to the floor. There is a lever on the right side of the heater

between heater and kick panel....with 3 push/pull positions.....all defroster, half defroster and floor, all to floor....operated by the "defroster"

knob. Ya kinda gotta almost stand on your head and look about maybe

halfway back on the heater to find that lever.

Check out what appears to be the heater plumbing up on this vintage D24 wreck photo.

True, Tim.....if his car is a Dodge, then there may be a heater thing

under the front seat. I'm no expert on Dodges however.

Is there a heater core under the seat with hoses connected to it???

happen to know for sure the Plymouths were oft time located under the front seat....kinda out of sight, out of mind approach..these I think were totally aftermarket for I can find no reference to them in the books..but I admit I do not have lots of books.

Nice for the dating game, and of course going to the drive in, or parking by the lake on those moonlit summer nights.

If this is the type of heater you have, you adjust the amount of heat by the valve, and the direction of heat by opeing and closing the vent flaps. These are quite effective at providing heat for the car. The defrost controlled by pulling the deforst knob is a bit limited as thee is no pickup of outside air. Consequently the air inside the car gets blown back up on the window and there is no dehumidification. So for best defrost, the cowl vent needs to be slightly open which kind of defeats the purpose of the heater. Also fo best de frost, the flaps on the bottom should remain closed. So while they produce a bunch of heat, it is not the best thought out system.

tell the truth Fred..all it takes is that seat and a gal..no other excuse needed..

Once upon a time many years ago I was looking at a '56 Caddy 4 door on a used car lot and the salesmans sales pitch was, and I'll never forget these words, "That back seat's so big, you don't even have to bend your knees to **** your girlfriend!!"

He was dressed in a plaid polyester suit with a mile wide crocheted tie as well.

I passed on the Caddy but I was left with that seared into my brain:eek:

(it had a heater under the front seat, too)

Didn't you guys have a Van in the 70s or 80s with the back seat sofa bed, I built one. I had a 1980 Dodge Van Short Wheel Base, inside complete with the velvet interior, counter, icebox, stereo, and the Big Comfy Couch/Bed.

VCR (I need to update to DVD)

Tim;

I have a huge collection of VCR tapes boxed up in the garage. Should have loaded them in your wagon last time you were here. Course if I did you would still be parked somewhere on a dirt road in Southern Tennessee with no one driving your van but it was still bouncing:eek:

I can only imagine the smiles on the faces of both of your wives....

dang Don...thought you were my friend and I had both wives with me that day..looks like I may be coming by your ranch come spring as it is anyway...

I will save them for you.

Er .....the tapes...... Not sure what it would take to save your wives:D
