central52 Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 How is the air cleaner supposed to sit on top of carberator on my 47 Plymouth. When I took it off months ago to spruce it up, a gasket crumbled out, around the clamp, I think. Does that clamp supposed to have a gasket running along the inside of it? I can clamp it on without the gasket, I suppose. It's difficult to try and see underneath when I put it on. Ed P. Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 I've had a few of these that wouldn't clamp down tightly without the gasket on top of the carb. You can make one from a piece of cardboard or inner tube if that's the case. Quote
randroid Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 Gents, As Reg suggested, a piece of inner tube works just fine; that's what I've been using for about fifteen years with no problems. I am still curious as to what was used originally. -Randy Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 I made a gasket from a throw-away food container , plastic that was a little rubbery . My gasket stays inside of the clamp portion and gives no problems . Without the gasket my air cleaner would be loose . Quote
central52 Posted January 7, 2008 Author Report Posted January 7, 2008 O.K., Now, Shelbizzy shows a gasket that fits over the top of carb. Jerry says his is inside of clamp. The surviving piece of my old gasket seems to fit inside the clamp, in the indented ring that goes around. Appears to be about an eigth of an inch thick. I guess having this set-up would negate the use of the outside gasket over the carb. Ed P. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 My cars have the gasket on the carb and not within the clinch ring of the air cleaner. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 Yup Both mine look like Shels. And I've also tried it without and the air cleaners seem to wobble without that gasket. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 I don't recall having a gasket at any time.....no particular problems without it. My air cleaner seems to fit pretty securely.....in fact I haven't even been using the brace. But if others have found gasket remainders, mine probably had one in the past also...... Quote
central52 Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Thanks guys for input. Seems like the gasket over the carb is the easiest and cheapest way to go. Ed P. Quote
