Hey guys, I recently got some used tires put on the old rims so I can roll the early 49 d24 around in the garage. When we put the tires on at the tire shop, we didnt use tubes just a thicker stem. The tires are holding air so far but thats just sitting in my garage. Has anyone here driven their car on the original rims without a tube but with a thicker stem?

if your rim was the one with just the round hole the larger Ford style stems usually do a good job..however if the holes were an oval design..you are now bordering LUCKY and for the shop you be ok..however if oval...highly recommend buying the bolt in models designed for the oval holes before hitting the road..

Where does one obtain the bolt-in style threaded valve stems? I've looked but I don't thik I'm correctly guessing what the sellers call them.

When I bought tubless radials for my Pickup, I brought along this picture and said these are required. They had them in stock.

I've had tubeless tires on the pickup since 01 and on the car since 04 I think. Works out fine as long as you get the proper valve stems as the others mentioned.

The stems I used were not the metal bolt on ones but just the thicker rubber ones. I am going to pick up the bolt on ones as you all suggested before I take her on the road next year but the rubber ones will work for now in the garage.

I do appreciate the advice, Todd Bracik.

Todd..the keynote here is oval hole...some rims had them some did not..the ones that were round in some instances are just uner the Ford larger hole and will work wtihout incident..verify what you have first ...I think the oval bolt ins are like about 2.75 a hit..the others that are for bolt in roundm hole will mormally come with rubber bushings that fit either the standard mall and large hole of the common rim..they run just about 2.00 each or thereabout..have seen them at swap meets at a buck per...

Noted. Thanks Tim. I will check before I buy. Todd.

I've been running with tubeless tires on my P15's stock rims since 2000 with rubber stems. Except for a tyre that developed a slow leak until it was fixed, I have had no problems with the other three. I don't know the hole shape though, probably round. I've never looked that close.

Hi Todd

You say your going to have your car on the road next year? Did you manage to get the rust out in your floors taken care of. I don't remember if you saw my project cars when you were here in Longview. I have the body back on the frame both sand blasted and sealed. Trying to drop the 440 in now, it has a front sump pan that is holding me up. Thats my excuse for seating in my recliner when its to cold to work in the shop.

Good to hear from you. yeah I remember those cars. Good to hear that you got the frame sandblasted and sealed. Still working on the floor on my end but I will get there slow but sure. I still have that video of your cars and I hope to get it to you after the holidays are over. What is the temp out there in Longview anyway?

Todd.
