You have a hemi powered Desoto fire truck?

Either I am confused, or really want to see a picture of this beast!

What is the current engine doing or not doing that makes it a poor driver?

Dude, you need to proof read.  There is no 260 magnum engine.  Do you mean the 360?  If it's a magnum Dodge called it a 5.9 Magnum, not a 360.  Damned metric system.

According to the mopar engines technical book, the bell housing bolt pattern is similar to the LA series (273, 318,340,360) motors, and will bolt up. There is supposed to be an offset difference on the crank flange. Meaning the position of the flange from the back of the block, so be sure to check that carefully. You may need an adapter to connect the transmission flywheel or torque converter. Or why not drop it in with the matching 904 or 727 trans ?

Best bet would be to use the complete 360 engine & trans......trying to adapt the original trans maybe possible but whether the Wilcap or similar adaptor will work between the 360 & Powerflite or manual maybe a moot point......the crank flange / flywheel/ flexplate /torque convertor interface is a dogs breakfast........use the complete engine/trans....only issue then is steering column /box clearance and the lack of a parking brake.........lol........regards from Oz.........andyd

I believe the Magnum has a bunch of electronics involved so be sure to grab the harness for it, the trans and pcm if you go that route.  The older LA 360 would be easier to do if electronics conversion is an issue.

Just a couple of notes...there is no ready-made adapter for 'going backwards' with the late engine and early trans. I have started just such an adapter, about ½ finished, but it is a complicated bitch. At my tender young age it may or may not get finished...anyone need a project?
