p15-1948
I'm got a choice of looking at a R10G-1 from a 53/54 Plymouth, a long ways from home, and an overdrive from a 55 Plymouth. I haven't seen the number on the case of the 55 yet, but it is much closer to home. I think I've seen that 55 and later overdrive transmissions will not work in my 49 Plymouth. Anyone know for sure what I can use? Thanks Mike
Booger
Suggest you download and print Garage Tech with Randy Rundle Borg Warner R10 and R11 Overdrives. Im sure its still out there. If I remember right he has passed on and his website may be gone as well He was the guru of ODs. Ods are nice to have but hard to find. And I see youre a flatlander. Changing rear gear ratios might serve you as well

Solution FarmerJon Posted November 4, 2023 Solution Report Share Posted November 4, 2023 The overdrive I got came from a '55. It is an R10-g1, and is the same length as my '48 transmission. I havent gotten mine rebuilt and swapped in yet, however. When i was on the hunt, I was under the impression that all the r10g1 transmissions would fit, although ones from dodges have the long input shaft for fluid drive. The '56 or '57 cars got the R11, and it is not a direct fit in the early cars.

dpollo
It will be fine up to 56 except for 12 volt solenoid. 57 and later R10J is different in several ways including the 3 speed shifter mechanism
p15-1948
Thanks for the help on an overdrive for my 49 Plymouth. I've purchased one for it from a 1953 Plymouth ($185). I've got the transmission, carburetor and switch, relay, most of the wiring harness, and only missing the inside cable. I guess luck comes in waves. I've got a line on another 53 OD setup, but the car in buried in the dirt up to the middle of its hubs (no wheels on the car). The OD setup is free, if I can figure a way to get the car up and out of the ground. It's in the middle of a tree row, in the middle of a corn field. It's also three hours away. Again thanks for the help!
FarmerJon
Will you have access to a tractor? What about battery powered tools, like a Sawzall and angle grinder.....
Ernie Baily
Hello, I put a 53 Plymouth overdrive in my 1948 Special Deluxe 2dr sedan and it all bolted in with no Problem. The only thing I did'nt do was to swap the rear end. My 48 came with a 3:91 rear gear where I believe the 53 Plymouth with overdrive came with a 3:54 gear. I can travel at 60-65mph all day long OK. However the 3:54 would have been Ideal and would have been able to travel at 70+ mph. Mine work Great! One of the best modifcations and still keep the originality of the Car intact. Best of luck ! Plymouthy Adams
I believe you would have found that the stock rear axle in 53 for OD equipped cars to be 4.1 Now High Drive would have coupled to the 3.73 short wheelbase cars and 53/54 conventional drive train would have coupled to the 3.7 also with expected ratio of 4.1 for hilly locations. The 54 model automatic also got the 3.73 stock gear. The 3.54 I personally have never seen stock in this era Plymouth. These are usually in the one of the three big sisters.
p15-1948
The guy I got the OD parts from said he had sold a water pump pulley and six bladed fan from the car the transmission came from. The guy buying the fan and pulley said the pulley was bigger than one from a non-OD car. Do I need to be looking for a fan and pulley?
