From what I have read the Nascar Plymouths didn't have the speed to keep up with the Hudsons and 

Oldsmobile.  Where they made their mark was with fewer pits stops for tires and fuel.  I also read that where they could they ran 6 to 8 ply truck tires which also extended time between stops .
