Conn47D24 Posted July 6, 2023 Report Posted July 6, 2023 Hi all, HOT day in Connecticut. Morning, and already 80's So I took about a 30 mile trip, mostly primary roads, 35-40 MPH avg. First time at 50... speedy ! Observations and a question. VERY pleased that the Temp read a steady 180' while moving, long idles 200 ish, then back down again to 180. Amp gauge finally registering as I just had the generator checked out and a broken wire repaired. ( more on that later ) OIL, running at 40 lbs, idle at lights 20ish. Now till this long trip I've been in the garage or around the block, few miles at best these past few years while working on the car. It's been 40-60 lbs oil pressure till this long trip. QUESTION, is this my oil relief valve kicking in and filtering the oil ?? Also, at the hottest, and furthest point I stopped for about 15 minutes, and again pleased it started right up. I installed a heat shield under the carb bowl and it seemed to help with past re-start issue. 2 Quote

Do you have the oil filter cannister that you can change out the filter only? Pull the top and see if oil is in the filter area. If it is then yes your oil is being filtered. If not then check the relief spring for debris or a broken spring. I know mine works form changing the oil and not seating the gasket correctly in the lid. Oil all over that side of the engine. Conn47D24 Posted July 6, 2023 Author Report Posted July 6, 2023 I just changed the oil and filter. Filled the canister up aroud the filter with oil. New lid gasket too. The canister does get hot to touch as the manual suggests checking. Does the oil pressure drop when the valve opens ? Quote
soth122003 Posted July 6, 2023 Report Posted July 6, 2023 What oil are you using? 10w30 pressure will drop. Straight weight just drops a little, I think. Joe Lee 1 Quote
TodFitch Posted July 6, 2023 Report Posted July 6, 2023 With a hot engine, 40 PSI will driving and 20 PSI while idling is well within normal range and nothing I would worry about. 1 1 Quote
Conn47D24 Posted July 6, 2023 Author Report Posted July 6, 2023 10-30 oil Good to know this is normal. Really is running well. ? Quote
greg g Posted July 7, 2023 Report Posted July 7, 2023 (edited) My manual says 60 psi is max, 4o to 45 is a good neighborhood for normal operating conditions. The dip to 20 at idle is not a concern. Since you prefilled the filter, make sure you are not over filled. My dad ran his flathead Dodges at the add mark. Said it lessened leakage. Edited July 7, 2023 by greg g 1 1 Quote
OldPly Posted July 9, 2023 Report Posted July 9, 2023 (edited) My 48 Plymouth 218 23inch oil pressure is 40lbs running off 12v starter. If your car is 6v starter turns shower . Oil relief valve keep oil psi around the 40-45 psi range oil thickness I don't thank should make a difference oil pressure and the valve just opens more or less off the pressure . Maybe broken spring or dirt in valve. I think I have seen kits for these valves I don't remember who or ware try Andy b oldmopar Edited July 9, 2023 by Karey More info 1 Quote
