mikeysgarage Posted May 8, 2022 Report Posted May 8, 2022 new to the page, new to the flathead 6, just bought a 1959 dodge with a 230 , does anyone have pics of the insideof the oil filter lid? mine is a lid and a gasket, should there be a spring in there? Quote
Booger Posted May 8, 2022 Report Posted May 8, 2022 (edited) I would say so. cone shaped if I remember. I went to sealed filter there can be leak issues Edited May 8, 2022 by Booger speling Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted May 8, 2022 Report Posted May 8, 2022 By 1959 I would assume all flathead sixes would have the full-flow oil filter. Is yours full-flow? Or does it have thin brake line tubes connected to it? Of course there would be a thin line going to the oil gauge, but it would not be connected to the filter itself. I do know that there is a spring under the lid on the partial flow oil filter like the one on my 48 DeSoto. 1 Quote
mikeysgarage Posted May 13, 2022 Author Report Posted May 13, 2022 it has the thin lines going to it , How do you convert to a sealed filter? Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted May 13, 2022 Report Posted May 13, 2022 By sealed filter, do you mean the partial flow? Just connect the lines to it. Why would you want to convert to a sealed filter? The ones where you change the fllter are easier. All you have to do is unscrew the top and put in a new filter. 1 Quote
mikeysgarage Posted May 14, 2022 Author Report Posted May 14, 2022 I don't want to , I was just asking. I believe I'm missing a spring in my lid. Just trying to get some info . Quote
Cannuck Posted May 14, 2022 Report Posted May 14, 2022 This is from a 59 dodge 230 but can't see if there is a spring . Look if you insert the new filter and screw down the lid tight and roll the engine or start it you will know if its going to leak . Don't ask how I know. 1 Quote

MarcDeSoto Posted May 20, 2022 Report Posted May 20, 2022 My 48 Desoto had a spring. A strong spring. That 59 looks like that perforated thing acts as a spring. 1 Quote
JBNeal Posted May 23, 2022 Report Posted May 23, 2022 The spring used on canister filter elements was to keep the canister from bouncing around in the housing. The perforated dome used on sock filter elements was used to hold the element in place as well as to keep the element from blowing apart. 1 Quote
