Need a fuel pump replacement for a 1952 Dodge Coronet with 230 engine. 56K Miles It has a Auto-Lite FA4001 on it now. I called Then and Now and they don't think there are rebuild kits for it. They said a replacement would be the 588 pump. I also read that the AIRTEX 73201 would work. Both have a glass bowl. The Auto-Lite doesn't. What should I be looking for?

I don't see many places have the AIRTEX in stock. I assume the AIRTEX would mount with the glass bowl down. Assume there would be room for it. The Auto-Lite has a stud in place of one of its screws. The stud supports the end of the heat shield above the pump. The other end of the heat shield attaches under an exhaust stud.

I have a new gas tank to go in. Also a new aluminum radiator. It sat for a number of years. Flushed the engine water jacket real good. Installed a new water distribution tube, water pump and thermostat. The old WDT came out in one piece. Changed the oil. Non detergent 30W. I have the engine running good direct feeding the carburetor with fuel. I don't run the engine for more then a few minutes until the radiator goes in this Spring.

This is a picture of the Auto-Lite FA4001 that was on the 52. Note the stud to support the back of the heat shield. There is a check valve on the outlet side and screen on the input side in the body of the fuel pump. Assume the check valve keeps fuel from draining back from the carb.

Either one of those you mentioned will work. You can replace one of the screws in the new pump with your existing stud.

Airtex have a problem with pump lever pivot pins walking out.  If you decide to use on of theirs, assure the pin is secured from backing out.  They just press the pin in relying on an interference fit.  It is not reliable.  The pin needs to be staked, or restrainedwith  jb weld or similar, or replaced with a pin with a head and clip.

I like having the glass bowel becasue you can see if there is any sediment coming up from the fuel tank. I know you are putting on a new tank but this is what was on my 39 desoto the AC 588.  I would also suggest that you install an electric FP back near the tank to help as an extra pump for when the car has sat for a while to act as a primer pump.

Also put an extra glass style gas filter just prior to going into the carb, last chance to catch any crap in the gas.  They make an AC unit that has a metal housing with a glas bowel just like on you fuel pump and they also look period correct. This filter also lets you know that you have gas going to the carb so you can always see the fuel.

DO NOT USE the PLASTIC fuel filter becasue you are just above the manifold and I have seen where these have melted and caused a fire.  You can get these at swap meets for a dollar and they are cheap. You have a lot of money inested inyour car so protect it wisely especially when gasoline is involed.
