dgrinnan Posted December 14, 2021 Report Posted December 14, 2021 (edited) Has anyone found a source for 1939-1947 Gauge decals to restore/refresh your gauge cluster. I find them for later model years but I can not find anyone that carries them for the earlier trucks. I have tried the usually suspects. DCM, Bernbaum, etc... I can even print them myself if I can find a template. If I can't locate any I might have to get creative with photoshop and scan the originals and then clean them up and try to make my own. I have used specialty paper that is peel and stick in the past. It works pretty well. Edited December 14, 2021 by dgrinnan Quote
Young Ed Posted December 14, 2021 Report Posted December 14, 2021 Most of what you see is on the glass. The actual gauge just has the dark background with the dots. Quote
dgrinnan Posted December 14, 2021 Author Report Posted December 14, 2021 (edited) Thanks. So the numbers, Heat, Oil etc... is printed on the glass. With my new found information I was able to find replacement glass for the two gauges. It helps to know what you are searching for. Edited December 14, 2021 by dgrinnan Quote
Brent B3B Posted December 14, 2021 Report Posted December 14, 2021 Did you call Vic? https://vicsdodgegarage.com/product/1939-47-dodge-truck-speedometer-and-gauge-cluster/ Quote

Apparently earlier ones are actually indented into the glass and laters are silk screened to the surface. Quote

I was under the impression that the numbers on the glass were silk screened. I discovered that they are actually etched into the glass. So with removal of the old paint they could be color changed. So many more possibilites now for changing up these gauges. Here's a test one I did. The left is actualy silver but it doesn't show up too well in the photo. The red looks splotchy because I didnt take the time to remove the little remnants of the remaining white. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v172/dodgepu1946/my%2040%20ply%20pickup/IMAG0662.jpg Here's an old post where I was experimenting with them Quote
dgrinnan Posted December 14, 2021 Author Report Posted December 14, 2021 I checked his web page. Way more expensive than I am willing to invest. 1 Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted December 14, 2021 Report Posted December 14, 2021 The pre-war lenses have the letters/numbers etched into the glass and are easy to repaint with a razor blade to clean up the new paint . The post war lenses are painted on the surface and would be a lot harder to repaint . But the paint on the post war lenses seem to hold up very well . Someone is selling the face plates at a fairly reasonable price , I can't remember if it is DCM . It is easy to repaint the faceplates but getting the dots right is a little tricky . The original dots are little squares , but sitting in the drivers seat , you won't notice if the new dots are round , if you make your own . After searching on how to make a small round dot , i found how the natives in OZ do it in their paintings . For a tiny dot , dip a very small drill bit in shallow white paint and then touch the face plate with the drill bit shank . Perfect round dot . 1 Quote

dgrinnan Posted December 15, 2021 Author Report Posted December 15, 2021 I did not see he had just the glass? All I saw was the entire gauge cluster? I found the lens. Yes, $20 works. Thanks, Quote
B1B Keven Posted December 16, 2021 Report Posted December 16, 2021 (edited) Don't bother with the decals for the odometer. Customers say they look terrible and are very hard to install. https://dcmclassics.com/search?controller=search&orderby=position&orderway=desc&search_query=gauges&submit_search= Edited December 16, 2021 by B1B Keven Quote
