Fun to watch,Season 1 Episode 2, "Fastest Car".. Edited November 21, 2021 by T120 Added picture
Kilgore47
When I got the P15 I had a friend with a dually pickup and a car hauler trailer pick it up for me. On the way back to the house he was running about 80 at one point. That's probably the fastest that car has ever gone. It will never go that fast again as long as I own it. I did hit 65 one time on a down hill run.
Plymouthy Adams
dang.....my Plymouth flathead don't shift out of first till about 52 mph....top end....? at 80 it is floating at 85 you think it is about to lift off and probably would with a set of wings...70-75 comfortable cruise. Sniper
I did get on the highway with the 51, got it up to 65 mph and took the very next exit. Was a bit darty at that speed. Since then I have found the king pins to be a bit sloppy and had a machine shop redo those. The tie rods were iffy, have a new set on the way, allegedly. The steering gearbox play checks out ok. Once I get hte front end back together I'll get a good alignment on it and we'll try that highway thing again.
Plymouthy Adams
the biggest single issue with these car feeling FLOATY is the manner the a arms are dampened with the shock....while they do check spring oscillation as designed by Ma Mopar....they do nothing for checking the body movement as the upper contact is not tied to the chassis..this is amplified at speed....most never go over 60 MPH here and thus never experience the land yacht in low rolling seas. Sniper
Wasn't floaty so much as steering was twitchy, the floaty part I am acquainted with. I've stiffened up the front suspension and have better shocks waiting in as well. We'll see how that affects things.
Plymouthy Adams
I assure you cruise at 80+ was not even in the realm of the design and with the roads of the day...the engineers would have to ask what address on what planet in what galaxy is this to be delivered and driven. Sniper
Lee Petty used to race 50 Plymouths and win back in the day, I wonder how fast he ended up going? Pole setting speed in this race was 96 mph, not Petty who set the pole but Petty did win the race. https://bench-racing.blogspot.com/2013/10/october-291950-lee-petty-hauls-in.html Petty's 51 season results. Lot's of top 5 finishes. https://www.racing-reference.info/driver-season-stats/pettyle01/1951/W/ A bit from Kyle Petty about a 1950 Plymouth https://www.motortrend.com/features/celebrity-drive-retired-nascar-driver-kyle-petty/ Edited November 22, 2021 by Sniper
Plymouthy Adams
difference in racing than that of normal road use....that car was not specifically your race on Sunday sell on Monday car...circle track as we all know is not real racing anyway.....give it the gas turn left give it the gas turn left......for certain Petty was not a number of stock items on that beast....short burst of speed on a banked track is not realistic in any manner compared to the highway. Sniper
Back then they pretty much were stock cars. And by stock I mean the one you drive to work in, not "stock" as in today's nascar stuff. Here is the 1950 Plymouth that Johnny Mantz drove to victory—at a then blistering 75 mph—during the first Southern 500 at the Darlington track. https://scliving.coop/travel/the-fast-and-the-famous/ Looks pretty stock to me. Here's a Hemming article pretty much confirming that https://www.hemmings.com/stories/article/practical-transportation-1950-plymouth-p-19 In 1951, 52 Plymouths raced in Nascar, finishing second to Oldsmobile for the year. Only Ford fielded more cars than Plymouth. In 1952 Plymouth finished third in the point standing despite only having a 6 against the competitor's V8s. https://www.allpar.com/threads/the-plymouth-cranbrook-cambridge-and-concord-cars-1951-1954.228248/
Kilgore47
Just to be clear. When the P15 was going 80 it was on a trailer.
