Jason K Dodge
So,... I have seen a bunch of posts and articles on various sites about gen III hemi swaps and they are becoming much easier to come by these days. Has anyone tried to jam one of them into a d-19 or similar? I have a line on a vehicle to pull the entire drive train from a Charger R/T, it's the whole car really, and the price is very well within reasonable and the motor purs like a kitten. So, will it fit? Any potential issues to watch for that you may have run into? I am close to pulling the trigger on this as I don't think I can pass the deal (even if I find something else to put it in). Just wondering if this is a "hell no", or a "go for it". Young Ed
From my understanding they have a very similar footprint to an old school small block so they should fit. I wouldn't expect to find off the shelf motor mounts or parts to make it fit though
Sniper
They are wider than the LA at the valve covers. Not as wide as at the exhaust manifolds. But the manifolds are the widest part of an LA, the ale covers are the widest part of the Gen III
allbizz49
If you have some fab and welding skills, anything is possible. As far as the new hemi, personally, i like to keep my old cars old.. i'm in the middle of a Desoto hemi and 4 speed install into my 49 Plymouth. Best to gather all of your parts and pull the front sheetmetal off. Get your your new motor/tranny where you want it and put it back together. You'll be able to make everything fit around the new powerplant. Good luck and have fun with your build.

Seems just not enough of these around or folks willing to take it on for aftermarket support.

I guess it's time to get out the tape and start measuring.

I like to keep my old cars old also, and that desoto hemi and 4speed sounds ideal to me. I also think there's nothing better than a manual in a classic regardless of power plant. If I can find a good manual to put behind a gen3, that would be the way id go. The modern motor and reliability make this a cruiser even my wife will want to drive. allbizz49
Don't the newer hemis have 6 speed manuals as an option? That would be the ticket, man what a ride it would be. Cruise down the freeway comfortably at 80 or putting around town.

Hard to come by without giving away your first born. That would definitely be the ticket.
gwaggonercpa
There is one for sale locally, and it does look like a fun ride. Depending on the estimated value of your first born: https://www.govmoco.com/cars-for-sale
Jason K Dodge
I have made some progress... i picked up a full donor car, an '08 charger with Police package, 5.7 litre, NAG1 trans. I got the chevy 6 that was in there removed, fab'd up some mounts and have the motor set in. Waiting to burn the frame side of the mounts in until I get the rear in place. I am swapping the stock(?) rear for the charger rear end. Give me the big police disc brakes and irs,, also helps with the trans.
Sniper
Just so you know, I am running steelies from that Charger on my 51. Well the back for now, P255/50r17's could go much wider.
Adam H P15 D30
Vice Grip Garage (youtube) is doing a Gen 3 swap into a GM truck. He is using a 6R80 auto trans with this combo for ease of install.

While there is some more room for tire, for additional support back there for the new rear assembly I might end up with a slight mini-tub and get a few more inches out of it.
