billrigsby Posted August 22, 2021 Report Posted August 22, 2021 Before I do the oil pump and oil pan, I am wondering how much force or pounds exerted should it take to rotate the assembled engine by hand with a 1 foot long ratchet? Everything seems to rotate easily, going to get a fishing scale to get an idea of what force is required of this particular engine. Did a search, but came up with everything but. Quote
CO54 Posted August 22, 2021 Report Posted August 22, 2021 Watching for the response on this, cuz it's good information for a used engine purchase or a rebuild...... Sorry, and thanks, Bill..... Eric Quote

If the spark plugs are out , or the cylinder head is off , and the engine has not been sitting for a long while and things have not gotten stuck or rusty . " everything seems to rotate easily " is the right answer . Quote
Tooljunkie Posted August 22, 2021 Report Posted August 22, 2021 Usually a nudge to get it going and should be able to roll it over with 1/2” ratchet. Will have some drag. A worn out lubricated engine will be less tgan a fresh rebuild. Quote
lonejacklarry Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 (edited) I have the same question but I need to know which way to rotate the engine. Looking at the front of the engine will it be clockwise? Part 2-Will two complete rotations get it back to where you started? Thanks. Edited August 23, 2021 by lonejacklarry Quote
The Oil Soup Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 As I assembled my engine I would rotate it after every part or series of parts were installed using an 18” Crescent wrench to make sure it was not binding. Crankshaft, pistons and con rods etc., also slathering on plenty of assembly lube. Clockwise and yes two revolutions. 1 Quote
lonejacklarry Posted August 23, 2021 Report Posted August 23, 2021 Thanks very much. I'm way too old to trust my memory on such things. Quote
