Boody Posted March 27, 2021 Report Posted March 27, 2021 I have a 1953 218 ,are these two fuel pumps interchangeable or is one better than the other I have a rebuild kit for the one with the glass bowl. Thanks Quote
greg g Posted March 27, 2021 Report Posted March 27, 2021 If the actuating lever is the same, rebuild and use the one with the bowl. Do you have the sheet metal heat shield that goes between the pump and exhaust manifold?? If not there is a pattern to make one in the down loads section of this site. Do you have the repair manual? In the fuel system section there is a volumn test, to check proper flow rate after its installed. Quote
Boody Posted March 27, 2021 Author Report Posted March 27, 2021 Don't have the heat shield, might be able to get one. No repair manual. Thanks for input Quote
greg g Posted March 27, 2021 Report Posted March 27, 2021 Before you connect the pump to the carb. Get a soda bottle put the fuel line into the bottle. Pull the coil wire from the distributor. Have an assistant crank the starter while you observe and count the pulses of gas going into the bottle. 12 pulses should give you 8 to 10 ounces in the bottle. If less start checking for faults. A lot of times it can be a partially clogged in tank pickup filter. Remove the line from the inlet of the fuel pump and blow some low pressure compressed air back through to the tank. This will clear the filter and the area around it of rust scale and other debris. Quote
desoto1939 Posted March 27, 2021 Report Posted March 27, 2021 the bottom one looks to be a dual pump. There is a an inlet line from the gas tank and an outlet lin eto the carb. The home over the main body looks to be a vaum line connection for a vaccum wiper motor. The one that is attached to the block is a single action pump and no vacuuum connection. I would check out the AC 588 pumps if only a single action pump or do you need a dual action pump. Rich desoto1939@aol.com Quote
Boody Posted March 28, 2021 Author Report Posted March 28, 2021 I noticed both actuated levers are a bit different. It does look like they rub against the crank shaft do you think they would be interchangeable? Quote
desoto1939 Posted March 28, 2021 Report Posted March 28, 2021 You might have a problem with either of these. The rotation of the camshaft is what make the lever move and then create the vacuum via the diaphram that is in the fuel pump body. In the top FP the lever is pointing upwards so the lobe has to strike the lever from the bottom of the arm to push the lever inwards to create the vacuum. the bottom looks as if the lever is struck from the top of the lever to push it in a downward motion. I would think that the camshaft on the top Fp would have to rotate in clockwise manner and the one on the bottom would rotate on a counterclockwise manner. I might be wrong but not a mechanic. Boody Posted March 28, 2021 Author Report Posted March 28, 2021 The pump without the glass bowl is the one that was on the motor when I got it. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 28, 2021 Report Posted March 28, 2021 They should either work. The bottom one with the glass bowl looks like what came on the trucks. You can also rotate the top if needed to fit in the space. Quote
