i  have  the  #1  piston  at  the  top  of  compression  stroke  ,  i  have  the  timing  mark  lined  up  on  the  crankshaft  . When  i  install  the  distributor  with  the  bolt

in  place  to  secure  the  dist.  to  the  block  i  don't  have enough  dist  movement  to  have  the  points  open  ..  i  tried  adjusting  the  plate  underneath  the  dist  but

no  help  .  what  should    i  do  ??

the  vacuum  cannister  is  not  hitting  the  block  .  i  have  full  movement  of  the  dist.  the  clamp  bolt  will  allow  .  i  took  a  round  file  and  filed  both  slots a little and  can  now

adjust  the  dist  so  that  the  points  are  open  but  the  rotor  is  pointing  towards  5  /  6  towers  on  the  dist  .  i'm  gonna  try  to  start  it  or  at  least  use  my  timing  light

to  see  how  close  to  right the  timing  is  .later  today .

merle is right. there is a second adjustment under the body. how about the rubbing block on the points? the last time i had a dist. issue i screwed around with it so much that i ended up with alot of unburned gas in the manifold. when i finally solved the problem [ my own stupidity ] i explode my mufller so bad that my neighbors ran over to see if i was still alive. if the car ran before this then it is most likely some small thing you are overlooking. start again from the furthest back when you shut the car off and then did what? you will find the issue.    capt den

Might be a plug wire position issue as well. Try moving the plug wires (keeping the firing order) one position on the dist cap and see if that gets you the adjustment needed.

The  engine  started  ok  .  I  cannot  fine  tune  with  my  timing  light  until  i  install a  thermostat  and an  upper  radiator hose .
