wagoneer Posted January 28, 2021 Report Posted January 28, 2021 I am trying to figure out what places to start investigating to find the source of what I perceive as engine drag when I place it into Low or High gear, and just have my foot on the brake to keep it still (like at a stop light, or just about to start. Car practically stalls, the oil pressure drops, and the generator output reduces. I put in new gapped plugs, idle adjusted with vacuum gauge and RPM. I put carb cleaner in, and engine cleaner. I did have the issue of oil bath cleaner leaking found elsewhere on this forum, and I checked my dwell is a bit high (39/40), but I don't think those things explain why there seems to be a big drag on the engine when put into gear. Drives fine in gear . Here's a video: Quote
Doug&Deb Posted January 28, 2021 Report Posted January 28, 2021 Semi auto trans? I didn’t watch the video yet since I’d never be able to hear it at work but a drop in oil pressure while at a stop in gear is normal as long as it’s not a big drop. It shouldn’t stall though. Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted January 28, 2021 Report Posted January 28, 2021 Fluid drive? That's normal, our D24 does the same thing. Takes some getting used to. The first few months after we got our car on the road, I drove it going through all the gears up, then down as I had learned to drive a manual. Didn't know what "fluid drive" was supposed to do. Once I figured it out, no problems Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 28, 2021 Report Posted January 28, 2021 Yes, the Fluid Drive will pull down your idle when stopped on the brake, with the clutch engaged. You can reduce how much it pulls down the idle with a proper tune up. You say you replaced the spark plugs and adjusted the idle. Did you adjust the idle mixture for optimum idle? You also say you checked the points dwell, but did you check and adjust the ignition timing? Both of these can have an effect on how much power your engine will have at idle when the Fluid Drive is in a stalled condition. Quote
