After new chrome

I’ve had most of my chrome redone and was wondering what others have done in terms of the paint detailing. Items such as dash lettering, red details on tail lights etc. I don’t think most paints will stick to chrome unless self etching primer is used (which I’ve only seen in spray and can’t imaging masking off the small letters). Is there any paint that will stick and hold up? Was thinking about caliper paint. Any and all advice is always appreciated

I've had great results with 1Shot lettering enamel  1Shot.com. I thinned it with lacquer thinner, then bushed it into the recessed detail, then wiped it off the highlights, leaving the color in the recesses. Comes in small cans for convenience.

Enamel paints will stick well, however if you have large areas that need to be painted then some sort of etching or abrasion of the chrome will be needed but for general detailing in recesses just paint straight onto the chrome will hold up to use.......I have used model paints such as Testors and Humbrol enamels  myself with good results..........andyd

Body shop supply stores sell a pen like fiberglass etcher.  Works like a retractable ball point pen but extends strand of fibreglass scratching material. Several passes on the area to be infilled gives the paint needed grip. Caution, wear gloves, set up a fan to blow any fibreglass shards or dust away from you and the work.  Resist all temptations to rub nose,eyes, ears etc. Use releases very small pieces of very irritating material.  I have about 15 years on my testors model paint red trim, still looks good.  Some chipping and peeling but color and finish still holding up.  I did the background of the hood Mayflower, the letters in the stop light bezel and the background of the deluxe fender trim pieces.lent the pen to a friend who did his hubcaps.

I used Testor's model paint ... Has held up well.

Ditto.  Testor's model paint, and I used the fiberglass etching pen to prep, too.  Good quality brush(es) recommended.  Pleased with the results and has endured pretty well.  I have read of some folks using fingernail polish, but have never read any follow-up on how well it goes on or holds up.

Ok, so now that we’ Got the process and materials down.... where to apply. 

 

1)I know the 3 stripes on the tail lights  are to be red, what about the “PLYAG”  ... red, black or nothing

 

2) same question about the tail light lens holder

 

3) How about the 3 stripes on each side of the center brake/license plate light ?

 

4) do the 4 stripes on the rear fender guards have any detail paint?

 

5) how about the 3 stripes on each side of the front emblem holder?

 

6) same question about the horn ring. 

 

Please keep in mind that I’m trying to get this P18 Special Delux (woodie)as it came off the showroom floor. It has been tough for me to decipher what it was like back then from the color renderings/sketches and B&W photos so I’m hoping that the collective knowledge here will chime in. Thank you

I have seen the infills on the light and hood emblems done never seen the gravel shields done.  But what ever you thinks looks good.
