Yzrider22k Posted June 3, 2019 Report Posted June 3, 2019 Looking for some help. I recently got my hands on a 51 B3B. She starts right up and idles fine, however hesitates if you push the throttle fast. Took the carb off, cleaned, new plugs, no timing issues so I am stumped. My next guess would be a vacuum leak but can’t seem to find any. Am I missing anything blatantly obvious? If you slowly press the throttle it’s fine, but the second you give it gas, she wants to shut off. any help is much appreciated. Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted June 3, 2019 Report Posted June 3, 2019 Sound like you need to rebuild the accelerator pump......and make sure all the internal passages are clean. That is where I would begin at any rate. Jeff 3 Quote
Yzrider22k Posted June 3, 2019 Author Report Posted June 3, 2019 Jeff, appreciate the quick response. Nick Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 3, 2019 Report Posted June 3, 2019 Check the step up piston too for free up/ down movement. 1 Quote
Yzrider22k Posted June 4, 2019 Author Report Posted June 4, 2019 Thanks Dodgeb4ya. Piston moves freely up and down. No build up or freezing. 1 Quote
The Oil Soup Posted June 4, 2019 Report Posted June 4, 2019 When you look down the carb and press the throttle do you see a spray of fuel? That would show the accelerator pump is working. 2 Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted June 4, 2019 Report Posted June 4, 2019 Nick; Once you have it sorted out I highly recommend using an additive in your fuel. The fuel these days can cause issues. I have found a few ounces of MMO in every other tank full works very well. Jeff 1 Quote
Yzrider22k Posted June 4, 2019 Author Report Posted June 4, 2019 Thanks for all the comments. When looking down the barrel, fuel is coming out however I wouldn’t call it spraying out. Its more just running down the side of the barrel. thanks for the advice on the additive. Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 4, 2019 Report Posted June 4, 2019 Yup, sounds like your accelerator pump needs to be replaced. It's a very simple job and you might not even need to buy a new one if you soak the old one in some oil over night. That might fatten the leather plunger back up so it'll squirt when it's depressed. 2 Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 5, 2019 Report Posted June 5, 2019 (edited) The accelerator pump jet orifice can get plugged up too.You need to check that it is clear of debris. A strand of copper wire will do. Edited June 5, 2019 by Dodgeb4ya 2 Quote
Yzrider22k Posted June 5, 2019 Author Report Posted June 5, 2019 Thanks so much gents. Will investigate and report back findings. Quote
Radarsonwheels Posted June 5, 2019 Report Posted June 5, 2019 I rebuilt a couple ball & ball carbs and they worked but probably not as well as sixty years ago. I ended up getting a repop weber from the stovebolt website. It had 12v electric choke and needed very little adjustment to make my 230 run like new. It started instantly and had great manners. I liked it so much any time somebody posts on here with familiar carb complaints I sound like an advertisement haha. I hope your pump rebuild goes well but if not... Quote
