jhm1mc13 Posted September 27, 2018 Report Posted September 27, 2018 Sounds like your vacuum motor needs help. To rebuild or replace this under dash unit can be almost as expensive as a switch to electric. Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted September 27, 2018 Report Posted September 27, 2018 More info/detail needed. Technically, ALL wipers only work when you turn them on/off. Perhaps you mean that you have to flip the switch on for one swipe, then off again so they return "home" before you can turn them on, then off, etc., for subsequent swipes? Assuming your car has vacuum wipers? Start with basics and check for leaks, loose lines, first. But I'd concur that if the lines and connections are good, the motor may need a rebuild. Quote
busycoupe Posted September 27, 2018 Report Posted September 27, 2018 If you do have vacuum wipers you can squirt a little oil. Into the vacuum line connection on the motor to lubricate it, then as hs been said, check the connections and vacuum lines. Quote
DrDoctor Posted September 27, 2018 Report Posted September 27, 2018 (edited) ATF works great as a lubricant. It won’t gum up the inner workings, and keeps the internals clean, and it won’t rot the paddle seals. Just don’t try to fill the vacuum motor – just add a few drops, and then work the wiper arms manually to distribute the ATF within the vacuum motor. And, don’t use brake fluid – any dribbling of that will ruin any paint it comes into contact with. If worse comes to worse, and you have to rebuild it, it’s not difficult. Just take your time, and be aware of the orientation of all of the parts. If the housing’s pitted or scored badly, you’re done. Minor scratches and pitting can be repaired with JB Weld, and progressively finer sandpaper, finishing with 600-800-1000. Lastly, a sheet of paper works fine for the gaskets, and don’t over-tighten the tabbed-screws. Edited September 27, 2018 by DrDoctor Quote
shedhouselife Posted September 30, 2018 Author Report Posted September 30, 2018 Thanks for all the replies! Do you guys think it's better to go electric? I want to stay 6 volt. Does anyone make a 6 volt wiper? Quote
casper50 Posted October 1, 2018 Report Posted October 1, 2018 I bought an electric set from a 48 chrysler. Bolted right into my dodge. No fuss no muss. Quote
